  8. A Thousand Miles From Nowhere by Saffron Mello Castro -

How the story began... I've always loved creative writing and from a young age would spend my time writing short stories. As an adult I continued writing for myself and finally found the courage to send some articles to a local paper, which were subsequently published. I also enjoyed writing a blog and some angst poetry. I began writing more seriously around five years ago after trying my hand at some Erotica after reading an article on the benefits of being a writer of this particular genre! This led me into my novel as I started to express myself as a woman and my own personal experiences in life. I just found I could not stop writing and found it to be a hugely cathartic experience-the only drawback being, reliving certain experiences as you write means you also experience the pain. What are my aspirations as a writer? To achieve fulfillment doing something I love and recognition in some capacity- Of course, who wouldn't want to enjoy some fame and fortune while we're at it? However, something as simple as knowing people have enjoyed your story or been able to empathize with certain characters or situations; to think I've put a smile on someone's face or raised a laugh, all that would be hugely satisfying. I've been a drifter all my life and never really found what I wanted to do; hopefully this may help in opening up an alternative path! I currently live in Spain, where I've resided on and off since 1986, with my two daughters. A THOUSAND MILES FROM NOWHERE is fundamentally a love story. The original title was, 'A 1000 miles of space' alluding to the physical and emotional distance between two people. However, after one publisher commented that it sounded more like the title for a Sci-Fi novel I began to rethink. It was thanks to 'Paul Hardcastle' and his track, 'A 1000 miles from nowhere', that I heard on a flight returning from a family trip to Dubai, that the inspiration for the new title suddenly hit! Strangely enough, another potential title was 'Shine a light' a stunning track by 'Spiritualized' which actually plays a part in the story itself- Music, as you can see plays a large part in my inspiration and indeed I almost always write with a 'writing soundtrack' to inspire and accompany me. A THOUSAND MILES FROM NOWHERE; is told in the first person, an account of the protagonist's feelings, experiences and adventures as she leaves the UK on a journey of self-discovery. In an attempt to blot out all memories of the person who had such a profound and at times, damaging, effect on her life, she finds herself drawn to other men to numb the pain. She embarks on a series of affairs and relationships, some of which invariably end in tears and others that potentially place her life in danger. Despite her intentions to 'find herself' and some direction in life, she's drawn to some less salubrious characters, as well as certain mind altering substances that do little to clarify her thought patterns, adding more confusion to an already confused mind! The story is in part based on my own real life experiences, as well as those of others I've known, with a large portion of imagination thrown in of course... How best to describe the book in few words? A journey of experimentation and sexual awakening set in Spain in the late eighties/ early nineties at a time when the whole 'New Age travellers' scene was well and truly alive-Veering from light-hearted, amusing reading to moments of deeper introspection, darkness and hedonism. Whilst writing the book every scene was vivid and real for me, accompanied by a continuing soundtrack in my mind. I've no doubt that this could be made into an amazing film, a sensitive and beautifully filmed portrayal of the novel with, of course, incredible tunes to accompany it. The scenery, the light, the atmosphere, everything is here, making it both a realistic if somewhat ambitious project. Who is the book aimed at? Given the drug content and travel, my initial assessment would have been, 'Alternative chick lit' and 'the young twenty something/backpackers'. Perhaps subtle murmurs of, 'Hideous kinky', 'The beach', combined with 'Eat, pray, love' but with the rawness of 'Skins'! I have actually described the story as a "F***ed-up Bridgette Jones on Acid", that in itself is probably enough to appall some and enthrall others: Who knows? Hopefully those from my generation who were around at the time, travelling and experimenting, will show some interest in the subject matter-This is all purely from a marketing perspective as I don't like to pigeon hole: Whoever the book touches in some capacity is enough for me. Finally, I don't believe my story is any more or less unique than anyone else's, I've just chosen to tell it.

  18. Self Help Masters – Don Miguel Ruiz: A Review of Life Changing Works -

Welcome! My name is Sid Akula, and I write [primarily] How-To and Self Improvement books. Growing up in middle America as a youth and a young adult, I usually made things happen in my life that required a ton of hard work (notice I didn't say smart work) but I accomplished several things I set out for including a family, higher education and a well-paying career. However, I could always feel that something was missing, and that I was an underachiever. After a somewhat devastating life event, I decided to stop and take a look at my life from ground zero - and thus began my journey into deep self improvement. After several years in this mode, I began thinking, "You know, I just might be an acceptable source to pass on much of this new found knowledge, experience and inspiration." And so, here we are... I hope that one or more of my books may be of great help to you or someone you care about. Please feel free to let me know if I've done my job. =) Happy reading!

  39. Kiss Me, Evil by Blackie Noir -

Decades ago Raymond Chandler taught me the only French word I know . . . 'noir.' Ever since, I've been jonesing for dark, hard-boiled, pulp style, crime fiction. From the genre's original innovators: Chandler, Hammett , Cain . . . to today's neo-noir stalwarts: J. L. Burke, Connelly, Pelecanos, Leonard, Teran, Lehane, et al. Call me voracious. I devoured their work. Inhaled the dark smoke permeated ambiance where it all played out. I read, and continue to read, them all. It was while reading the newcomers, the young turks, that I decided . . . reading was no longer enough. I had my own tales to tell. Characters that kept nagging at me, urging me, beseeching me, demanding that I bring them to the page. Those who have met them through my work know . . . these are not gentle folk. Their petitions aren't meant to be taken lightly. So, in an attempt to appease those raucous demons, I sat down in 2000 and began my first novel . . . "Freeway Pigeons." I completed "Freeway Pigeons" in 2001. That was the opening of a mysterious and magical door. Just what was behind that door? Lady, or tiger? Funny, I'm still not certain. Still, I wouldn't change things. I'd cross that threshold again in a heartbeat . . . undaunted. And why not, I've been blessed with a cornucopia of encouragement. Who encouraged me? Every writer, genius or plodder . . . visionary or hack, who ever made me laugh or cry, rage or sigh, become more aware or escape the doldrums. Every scribe, word-weaver or poet who had my heart trying to bang its way out of my chest or sing with the angels. All of them. Man or woman, fresh or ancient, who moved me emotionally. Entertained and educated me. Kept long and sometimes lonely vigils with me. Gave me the unmitigated joy of a good read. THEY encouraged me . . . every last one. I owe them. I believe the best way I can repay that debt is through you, you the readers. If I can deliver the joy, the escape, the spiritual catharsis of the coveted 'good read' to you, then at least a part of my debt has been paid. * * * Standard bio stuff: Started life on the cold coast (N.Y.C.) wended my way west to the land of sunshine, surf, and strange (L.A.). Interests: Books. Books! Books!! Books!!! BOOKS !!!!! Other interests: Music (as played / sung by others). Movies. Physical activities (running, free-weights, hiking). BIKES! (Harleys & old-Triumphs). Bottom line: Family. (what it's all about)

  40. Where Would You Like Your Nipple? -

I’m a wife, mother and really young grandmother. Together with my high school sweet heart husband, a neurotic Pomeranian and a blind cat, I call Arizona home because the southwest feeds my soul. My love of books, specifically the romance genre, has been a lifelong affair, both as a reader and a writer. A bout with breast cancer sharpened my resolve to see my stories shared with others. Today, I’m a five-year survivor, living the dream. My friends call me Mac. I hope you will too.

  41. Blinders Keepers by John Rachel -

John Rachel has a B. A. in Philosophy, has traveled extensively, is a songwriter, music producer, novelist, a left-of-left liberal, and has spent his entire life trying to resolve the intrinsic clash between the metaphysical purity of Buddhism and the overwhelming appeal of narcissism. Prompted by the trauma of graduating high school and having to leave his beloved city of Detroit to attend university, the development of his social skills and world view were arrested at age 18. This affliction figures prominently in all of his creative work. While living in Japan in 2008, he wrote his first novel, From Thailand With Love. Then in November of 2009, he completed his second novel, The Man Who Loved Too Much. It was written over ten months, as he lived in and traveled through Japan, China, Nepal, India and Thailand. While writing 11-11-11, he lived in Japan and Vietnam. 11-11-11 is the prequel to 12-12-12. The two are linked by characters and location. The clueless and basically powerless citizens of Pulnick, Missouri find it nearly impossible to eke out a meaningful existence in a world plagued by stupidity, superstition, gossip, political manipulation, and paranoid rumors about the end of the world. Does this sound familiar? The lead character for the two novels is Noah Tass, a bright young man in his early twenties, who ultimately is caught up in all of the ongoing insanity as he attempts to escape the bland hopelessness of his dreary life and begin a new, meaningful existence elsewhere. His bizarre journey is one of self-discovery and the kind of enlightenment one only achieves by confronting the weird and unexpected. Sounds serious? Actually there is much more laughing than crying. The events of these two novels are fictional, an alternative reality. But remarkably they ring truer than reality itself. 12-12-12 was completed January 2012 and was published March 18, 2012. While writing this dark satire, chock full unusual twists and biting political humor, the author lived in Vietnam, Taiwan, South Korea, Indonesia and of course Japan. John Rachel’s most recent novels include Blinders Keepers (published June 1, 2013), and An Unlikely Truth (planned publication date February 24, 2014). Blinders Keepers sprung from a suggestion made by a movie industry executive. Impressed by 11-11-11 and 12-12-12, this gentleman was convinced they would make a great movie, but would require drastic editing, since filming them in their entirety would amount to about 20 hours of screen time. Author Rachel combined the stories, cut the plot line to the bone, and finished the screenplay Blinders Keepers __ ‘The blind leading the blind and the rest of us directing them to the nearest cliff.’ __ just last autumn. The novelization of that screenplay is the book. Before starting on the screenplay, the hyperthyroid Rachel had just completed his political drama An Unlikely Truth. Though it contains much of the biting humor which has driven his previous novels, it overall represents a dramatic shift of tone for the author. Set in lovely homespun Dayton Ohio, it’s the story of an underdog Green Party candidate’s unpropitious fourth run for Congress against a slick GOP pretty boy, a sixth-term incumbent, an ex-military guy, totally full of hot air but a walking Kodak moment with a campaign war chest that made him almost unassailable. The story incorporates a unique and powerful strategy for defeating the sort of ubiquitous blowhards which lately have monopolized Washington DC, are owned lock-stock-and-barrel by big corporations and Wall Street bankers, vote their pocketbooks, smugly ignore the needs of the vast majority of citizens, and have mutated contemporary American politics into a play-for-pay game show with legislative votes going to the highest bidder. An Unlikely Truth’s release early next year is shrewdly timed for the mid-term congressional elections in November. During the writing of these last two works, Rachel traveled extensively in Japan, and went back to America twice. He just recently returned from a nine-nation tour of Europe. The guy just can’t seem to settle down. His last permanent U.S. residence was Portland, Oregon where he had a state-of-the-art ProTools recording studio, music production house, radio promotion and music publishing company. During his ten years in Portland, he professionally recorded and produced many artists in the Pacific Northwest, releasing and promoting their music on radio across the U. S. of A. John Rachel has no pets but raises organic vegetables in the fields adjacent to his home. He often refers to his current life as living in a fairy tale, and maintains that his biggest complaint now is that his jaw hurts from smiling so much. 42. Madame Charmaine by David Tish -

It is impossible for writers to completely separate their own lives from what they write. Writers, and that includes me, put their stamp on their work whether they want to or not. We all have our own way of looking at things, and even when we try to write from some character’s point of view, our personal prism lets our light shine through. That is true even when the character has a personality and background that is completely different from ours. So, to a greater or lesser degree, all writing is autobiographical. Madame Charmaine, for example, has a heavy autobiographical flavor. Madame Charmaine is set in small-town Nebraska. I was born and grew up in a small town in Nebraska. In fact, I was born in the same house I lived in for the first 17 years of my life. The four main characters in the book, three boys and a girl, are composites of kids I grew up with. And, I confess, there is a bit of the young David Tish in all of those characters, to one extent or another. All of the many and varied townspeople in the book are based on people I knew back then, which was the 1940s and ’50s. Moreover, the description of the Nebraska countryside in Madame Charmaine is real, as is the description of day-to-day life in rural Nebraska all those decades ago. The pancake-eating contest, for example, which is told in great and, I hope, hilarious detail in the book, actually took place. So did the building of the raft that the three boys took out on the Missouri River. All in all, not much has changed in small-town Nebraska since those early years of my life there. Anyway, after I graduated from the University of Missouri in 1965 with a Bachelor of Journalism degree, I went to work as a reporter for the Lincoln, Neb., Journal. About a year later, the Omaha World-Herald offered me a job. I accepted and worked at the World-Herald until 1971, when I made an abrupt, albeit brief, career change and moved to Washington, D.C., and went to work for a U.S. senator. I spent two-and-a-half interesting years in the nation’s capital, but in the end I missed writing so much that I left and went back to The World-Herald. Then, two years after that I got a job as a reporter with The News-Review in Roseburg, Oregon. I stayed at The News-Review until 1990, ultimately becoming managing editor. On Halloween night of 1990, my EFL (Editor For Life), Mary Reynolds and I climbed into a rental truck and drove to Seattle, where we lived for the next 17 years. During that time we both worked for newspapers in the Seattle area. We also were married in 2003. And I spent the final five years of my career as a copy editor at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. I retired in 2007 and Mary and I moved to a place in the country just outside of Tieton, a tiny town in south-central Washington. We have four acres, plenty of room to set up a dog agility course to exercise our four dogs and ourselves, plenty of room for a few chickens, and plenty of room for a large garden. And, most important, plenty of quiet time to devote to writing. During my newspaper career, which spanned 45 years, I won numerous news writing and editing awards. I even stepped outside of the news business and wrote about a dozen plays, four of which were given full stage productions. I loved being a newspaper reporter. I loved the people I worked with. Newspaper people are smart, skeptical, full of good humor and exceedingly dedicated to their profession. And most of all, I loved – and still love – to write. So … when retirement came along, I looked for a new outlet for my passion. As a father of four boys and the grandfather of nine, I quickly decided that writing children’s books fit the bill perfectly. But you, the readers, will ultimately be the judge of whether I made the right decision. hifromdavidtish@gmail.com

  43. Image of Deceit by Jill Shannon -

I've been telling stories for a long time but getting one down on paper is another matter! I entered the professional writing world as a freelance writer covering the people behind some impressive motorcycle builds. In my spare time I worked on The Novel... It takes more time than most would believe possible to get a story to print. I personally found it best to walk away from the project and let it rest awhile. Months and months in fact. Whenever I re-entered the world I'd created for my story, I had a sharper eye for what was a bunch of hogwash and what might be pretty darn good. The right words in the correct order can have a powerful impact and it takes time to fit all of the pieces together. Support is also needed in a big way. Writers need editors and readers that will preview with a critical eye and not be afraid to tell you the truth. Family needs to understand the vacant look that comes with brain overload while figuring out plots. Reading is how I relax. I devoured books as a child and that appetite has not diminished. My favorite genre is mystery, but I also venture away from the top ten list of well known mystery writers and read a broad spectrum of non-fiction. I play a lot during the summer months, not much gets done in the way of work. We are a household of landspeed racers. I race a 1941 Indian Motorcycle and hold records in the 350cc vintage class for both gas and fuel. I'm also proud to be part of history as a Bonneville SCTA starter. The hours are long, the sun is hot, but the reward is inspiring. To witness dreams becoming reality is humbling. I'm currently working on my next novel, another mystery with a strong female protagonist.

  45. The House on Persimmon Road by Jackie Weger -

I’ve been writing romance novels off and on for thirty years. In between books, I’ve had the good fortune to travel to many interesting and exotic locales from London and Paris to Panama, Cuba and Costa Rica. I’ve sailed on a twenty-nine foot sloop in the Pacific, volunteered at a Sisters of Mercy Mission in Colon, canoed on the Big East River in the wilds of Canada and lived part of a winter with trappers in the Louisiana swamps—collecting memories, friends and experiences—which oft times make appearances in my novels. I once was married, but now I’m not. I began a university career at the age of sixty-two and was utterly fortunate to get accepted into a Study Abroad program my senior year—at Queens’ College, London University. The best thing about travelling this good earth by air, truck, boat, mule and foot is all of the wonderful people I've met along the way--from docents in St. Paul's Cathedral in London to trappers in the Louisiana swamps. All of whom who were decent, hard-working folk and more than kind to a curious and weary traveler. I love living near water--oceans, lakes, rivers, ponds, estuaries and canals. In a pinch--a water-clogged ditch will do! At the moment I'm anchored in a small community in Hockley, Texas with a man, a dog and seven feral cats.
