“Yeah. I mean, yes sir. Of course. I wouldn’t do anything like that. It’s your room.”
“That’s right.” He frowns. “You’re submissive?” I yawn and shake my head. “You’re not submissive?”
“No uh- yes, sir. I am. I wouldn’t be here otherwise. Come on, man-”
“Oh yeah, well, okay. Michael Lane. Lane? You any relation to Lois Lane?”
I laughed, “All depends. You Superman?”
“That, I am.” Walking out from behind the counter, he looks me over like a new car. “I have some awesome memories of you Michael Lane.” He takes my arm and twists it. “To be completely honest- the reason I remember you is cuz- I don’t normally sleep with white guys. Don’t get excited by your kind, normally. But you– I- I remember you.” He drops my arm and steps behind me. “Hell yeah, I remember. You got some nice white cake there young man. Cream de leche.” Believing he does remember me afterall, I smile and lean against the counter. Taking the keys, he tells me which one is to his room. “And this one,” he continued, “is to the front door. Come and go as you please- within reason. I wanna know what you’re up to- at all times. You take off- I wanna know about it. You ain’t happy- you tell me. You need food, I’ll feed you. But you start hooking- here in this establishment- you don’t- you don’t gotta tell me. I’ll know about it-” He points at me. “And I will kick your mother fuck’n ass all the way outta here.” I yawn. “Same house rules. Ain’t nothing changed. No drugs. No smoking. No alcohol.” He taps my chest with his index finger. “You take care of yourself, boy. I mean it.” He sniffs three times. “No colognes. No incense. No strong odors.” His eyes grow bigger. “And you keep your ass shaved. Baby smooth. You understand?”
“Yes, sir.”
“I like me a lot’a sex. You like a lot’a sex?”
“Yeah, sure.”
“Sometimes, I need it three times a day.” He rests his hand on my shoulder. “Can you handle that?”
“Of course, sir.”
“Good. You got any diseases?”
“No, sir.”
“Alright.” He leans back looking at me sideways. “You sure you’re submissive? You don’t look it. You mess’n with me, kid?”
“No, sir. I ain’t. I’m masculine, but-”
“Oh, nevermind. I guess I can see that. Ain’t nothing wrong with being masculine. I’m masculine. More than you though. I’m actually bisexual. Never slept with guys till I was twenty-eight.” He returns behind the counter. “We’re open all night on Saturdays now. Other nights, still close at three. You remember the codes?”
“Codes-?”
“You forgot the codes?” He runs his knuckles up the side of my face. “I’m the boss. Whatever I tell you, you do it. I tell you to skin it, you get naked. I say heads up, you best be on top of it. I say give me cake, you get your ass in the air. I say do a doughnut, you roll your ass over. Any questions?”
“Oh- wow, no sir. Those are- those are good- good rules. I mean- codes. Good codes. Good to know. I mean- good to be reminded.”
“I don’t mind reminding you if- you don’t mind being reminded.” He picks up a small stack of receipts on the countertop. “It’s all about communication. You’re a smart kid. Probably a good communicator, too. Just like me. But you ain’t no orrie-ator. Now me, you know– I’m an orrie-ator. That’s why you came back for more. More authority and command- like the great black master Martin Luther King, Junior. Ain’t no one can argue that.”
“Huh?” Black clouds roll in overhead. “I’m exhausted.”
“I bet you don’t know what MLK’s best speech was?”
“Uh- I Have A Dream?”
“Close. Our God Is Marching On.”
“Huh?” I open my eyes wider, trying to keep them from blinking so much.
“Here- let me recite it for you- free of charge.” He sticks his chest out. “We are on the move now.” His voice changes and sounds sort of like Martin Luther King, Jr.’s. “Yes, we are on the move and no wave of discrimination can stop us. The burning of our bars will not deter us. The bombing of our churches will not dissuade us….The beating and killing of our drag queens and transsexuals will not divert us. Hahahaha.” I fail to laugh, as I am rolling in and out of consciousness.
“You like that?” he laughed. “You like how I changed it? Huh? Huh Michael Lane?” I fall forward. “What the hell?” He lifts my body up off the counter. “Are you- you? You’re on drugs.”
“Oh wow.” I wobble back onto my feet. “Woe. I am dizzy tired.” I grab my backpack. “If I don’t sleep, I’m gonna fall over.”
“Why you so tired?” He helps me with my backpack. “You drive all night or something?”
“Yeah. All the way from New York City.”
“NEW YORK CITY? What the hell were you doing in New York City?”
“Well, sir– mostly thinking. You know- contemplating things. I had a lot to think about.”
“Yeah? Like what?” He walks around the counter and stands next to me.
“Well— I don’t know. I- I figured I’d done all I- could do- for now anyways- and if I stayed- well- if I left, I could do more like I wanted to- and maybe a whole lot more- like I wanted- you know- everything I was wantin’ to do. And I tried to do it there- but it never worked out.” His eyes gloss over. “Sorry, I’m- I’m boring you. It’s just your question is- so deep.”
“Yeah? Well- you’re- you’re a pretty smart guy. I don’t wanna bore you with simple questions.”
“I appreciate that.”
“That there bag all you got?”
“Yes, sir.” I rub my forehead. “I mean no sir. I got more– outside in my Jeep. I parked it-uhm—uhm—” He smacks me. “Thanks. I parked it out- out front.”
“No, no, don’t park on the street. Park it in the rear. Why would you park it out front? Come on Michael. You’re a smart guy. Go move it.” He turns me towards the entrance. “I’ll meet you out back and show you where to park it. You forget anything else?”
“No, sir.” I get to the door and turn around. “Does this place ever get busy? I mean, it was pretty deserted the last time I was here.”
“Deserted? You sure?”
“Yeah. I wouldn’t ask, but- I’ve got this phobia about places going out of business.”
