One British shipping official stated that 27% of merchant seaman died through enemy action and the angry ocean. The Lily some months later was torpedoed and sunk in frigid waters – a chilling introduction to the perils of war for a teenager who had to undergo a stay in a Canadian hospital. Revisiting his past, 95 year old Whitehead recounts how ships delivered him to distant harbours where his wartime odyssey was alternately dramatic and amusing, intriguing and reflective, filled with adventures and misfortunes. Edward “Ted” Jones Whitehead, now 94, was born in the Rhondda Valley of South Wales in 1923. Orphaned at nine he spent time with older brothers and sisters until he left school at sixteen. While attending secondary school, his English master would give him the day off for superior essay writing – a talent he has maintained throughout his life.

At eighteen after leaving a literally rubbish job in England, Ted found himself at the Swansea sea port in South Wales. There is where his ocean going began during World War II in the dangerous engine rooms down below and his globetrotting journeys lasted for the next forty years. Ships took him to every continent except Antarctica and as a senior his wanderlust has not stopped. Through the years some of his adventures have included the French Foreign Legion and service on the Queen Mary I.

Hello- I’m Ash. I have been spending time in Bangkok Thailand for a number of years. About three years ago I met an old guy called Edward Jones whitehead from Wales, UK, also known as “Taff or Ted” who is now 95 years old. Myself and my wife take care of him here in Bangkok. I, James M. Becher, was Born on June 8, 1943 of a Christian family and accepted Christ at an early age  Interested in writing and drama since High School, I graduated from Grace L. Hill Memorial Christian School, where I participated in several plays and got A’s in English Grammar, and wrote several short stories, poems and articles, usually incorporating my faith into my writings.  While attending St. Petersburg Jr. College, in St. Petersburg, FL, I won second prize in a writing contest with a Biblical short story, called “Beggarman-Thief,” which forms part of my first novel. I attended Bob Jones University, in Greenville, S.C., and then Clearwater Christian College, graduating with a B.A. in Bible-lit, going on to Biblical School of Theology (now Biblical Seminary) in Hatfield, Pennsylvania and graduating in 1974 with an M.Div. Ordained in November of 1974, I served in different areas of Ministry, one of which was a foreign student ministry, which is where he met his dear wife, Berenice from Venezuela, and which is also where I started writing my first two novels.
Berenice and I were married in 1980 in St. Petersburg, FL.  In 1989, we went to Venezuela for an extended stay, where, along with teaching English to the Shell American Oil Company’s employees, at the same time I completed my purposeful time travel novel, Impossible Journey, A Tale of times and Truth, using a friend’s computer. Upon returning to the US, I also completed my Biblical novel (a historical fictionl novel of the time of Christ), “Of Such Is The Kingdom,” which I had started before we left, and of which the short story, “Beggarman-Thief” is a part.  It was published by PublishAmerica in 2003.
Also shortly after returning to the U.S., I began publishing my self-help ezine,  “Inspirational Success Tips,”  my articles from which now form my self-help book “Principles of the Kingdom.”
Later, I revised the sci-fi novel, Impossible Journey, A Tale of Times and Truth, and it was published in January of 2005.
In 2007, I revised and expanded the Biblical novel, OF SUCH IS THE KINGDOM, A Novel of Biblical Times, adding PART III about the early church.
I also completed a short self-help book (or booklet–roughly 18,000 words) based on my articles from my ezine with quotable quotes for each chapter. It’s titled Principles of the Kingdom (God’s success principles) and was published in 2012
In November, 2013, I preached my “Christmas Victory” message, based on an insight on Isaiah 7:14, which the LORD had shown me in seminary. I also gave a history of the writing of “I Heard the Bells on christmas Day.” This resulted in the writing of my latest novel, The Christmas Victory, A Gem of A Sermon, All Wrapped Up in a Historical Novel,  which was published in July of 2014.
This year (2018) I have been further revising and updating all my books. I completely re-designed the cover to Impossible Journey, making it more relevant to the content, I made Of Such Is The Kingdom into 4 volumes, thus giving buyers a choice of getting all 3 parts at once or starting with PART I and getting the other 2 parts later. I also added a full-color Gift Edition to “The Christmas Victory,” thus giving buyers a Christmas gift option (to buy as a gift for someone else or even as a gift for themselves),
