A system similar to South African apartheid existed on Aboriginal reserves like Yarrabah in Queensland till as recently as 1984. This book, The Dying Days of Segregation in Australia: Case Study Yarrabah, is unique in that Australian Aborigines themselves tell their story of living under legal discrimination on reserves and discusses their aspirations for self-determination, local government and land rights.
Human rights abuses of the law they lived under are discussed in detail as well as government policy that promoted racial discrimination. Race relations are examined. The book is a political history from contact till now between white and black Australia and puts Yarrabah in a national context.
Despite past racism and discrimination and some lingering examples of this in government policy and society’s attitudes, Yarrabah today is a thriving community run by an Aboriginal Council. It still has some of the hallmarks of a disadvantaged population like lack of housing and health issues.
Yarrabah is no longer a reserve. It is still a discrete community but its residents do not experience segregation and can come and go freely and have the same human rights as other Australians. For those interested in politics and government and public affairs policy in relation to ethnic studies or minority studies, this is the book to read. History buffs and legal eagles will find it fascinating. The author has a long term and close association with Yarrabah.

I remember being 10 years old, sitting inside a tiny bedroom closet with the door shut, pen and paper in hand, anxiously writing my first fiction story to the dim glow of a plug-in nightlight. About Rituals of Season

The overall tone of this book was quite dark. With only five chapters, it was short but packed with intense emotions. The chapter and poem titles gave insight to what was to come. Despite the sadness, there were a couple sweet poems. The author gave birth to two sons through the course of the book. The poems she writes about her children are very sweet. I thought they were welcome breaths of fresh air. I did notice a few grammatical errors but it did not detract from the overall experience of the book.

I give Rituals of Season by Giovanna Ess 4 out of 4 stars. This was a tough read; but an important one. Abuse is not an easy subject matter to discuss. Many people turn a blind eye to it. I think that is why this kind of work is so important. The ability to write books and poetry provides a voice to those who otherwise might not have one. It also encourages those who have similar experiences to speak out and get help. The author, in her dedication, includes several phone numbers to The Domestic Violence Hotline. I feel that this book can be helpful to anyone who finds themselves in abusive relationships. There are people out there who sympathize and want to help.

It took thirty eight years to discover the pen. Prior to that, my working life had, and still does span several industries. In that time I succeeded and failed in many things, which looking back, the success of a venture is perhaps less important than it seemed at the time. Ultimately it has provided to me with the greatest qualification for an author, which is rich life experience and the freedom from conventional thinking.
The stories began about nine years ago, when my eldest two children were just toddlers. I often left the house early in the morning, only returning late in the evening. They would wait up for bedtime stories, and bedtime stories became very important to us as a result. From time to time the chosen story would be rejected, and so I would make something up. Eventually all books were rejected, in favour of daddies made up stories. Even then the idea of publishing anything didn’t cross my mind. It took a shift in my profession from design to manufacturing before I eventually considered writing. It seemed to me that the creative side of my brain needed to work.
The first six books were children’s books, based around animals and wildlife, but very much novels, pitched towards older readers or perhaps more appropriately parents reading to their children. This is something I strongly believe in and think happens less in this new busy age in which we live. It’s my belief that those few minutes shared with a bedtime story strengthen the bond between parent and child, something I believe a child remembers for life.
In 2017 my fascination for history and my love for my native county of Norfolk (UK) collided, giving rise to my first novel targeting adult readers, published the first ‘Rib Bone Jack’ adventure, (historical action adventure, set in the Napoleonic war era.) This marks a sharp turning point in my writing, one which I have not yet looked back from. With the first three proving popular, I am presently working on the fourth, as well as ‘something completely different,’ which might just appear near to the end of the year.
I am eternally grateful to those who spend their time and money on my books and hope you will continue to follow my work in the future.

Ambient Light: This is the light we will be using the most. Here we thoroughly cover what it is and how to work with it! Once we know how to control the light, we can control the shadows that define our shapes and textures.

The Main/Key Light: Before you can learn to master the shadows, you need to understand the light that is making them! Each light source, whether it is ambient light or studio light (or both) creates its own set of shadows. And it’s own set of problems and opportunities!

Shadows: The shape, position and depth of the shadows – and your mastery of them – is what will turn your photos from dull lifeless “pictures” into something you will be proud to not only put on the wall…but you will be proud to sign them too!

The Fill Light: Here is the key to controlling the depth of your shadows and bringing emotion into your art.

Fixing Problem Areas With (Or Without) Shadows: Every face and every scene has flaws that you can “fix” in your camera. Every subject you shoot wants and deserves to look like a million bucks! It’s your job as a photographer to make that happen.

Glare: Glare in glasses can easily ruin a photo. Plus it’s incredibly difficult to “fix” in Photoshop. Fixing it in camera is really easy once you know how.
