A hundred years ago, a young man of 34 years age, Dr. Mathra Singh, was sentenced to death by the British at Lahore Central Jail for waging war against the colonizers, bringing to an end a short but brilliant war of independence that was violent in nature and ruthlessly suppressed by the British. Starting from San Francisco where the Ghadar Party was formed it spanned the globe in its reach, taking advantage of the First World War that had just begun, and having global alliances with ‘enemies of enemy’ at the time, Germany, Ireland, and Japan. Dr. Mathra Singh joined the Ghadar Party in San Francisco in 1914, was sent to Hongkong and Shanghai for spreading nationalism and quest for freedom and came back to India as a member of the core team of revolutionaries, being himself in-charge of bomb making. Traitors and approvers ultimately resulted in failure of the rebellion (which came the closest to achieving success as per British experts), following which Dr. Mathra Singh successfully escaped to Afghanistan where he teamed up again with other Indian freedom fighters and continued the fight for independence. On such missions, he went to Russia for seeking help from Tsar Nicholas II with a letter written on gold plate. He also planned to go to Japan via China to continue the fight but was caught, brought back to India and tried under the famous Lahore Conspiracy Case. He was awarded the death penalty and achieved martyrdom on 27 March 1917. Over 10 years of research and having exclusive information from family archives (the author is the grandson of Dr. Mathra Singh), makes this an exhaustive study of Ghadar movement itself and his stellar contribution to India’s fight for independence.

JPS Kohli (1963- ) is the grandson of Dr. Mathra Singh, and has helped carry forward his twin legacies of pharmaceutical studies and spreading word about the political struggles of the forgotten heroes of Indian history. The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid was inspired from my friendship with a retired circus sideshow sword swallower. The following are excepts from a recent review of my book:
“The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid is a novel that covers decades of time, and travels both North American coasts. The book opens with a scene with an older couple and their young grandson, the grandfather receiving some sad news. The remainder of the story is broken down into three parts that set the events that gave birth to that scene.
Part one introduces Duke Reynolds, the sword swallower. Duke is a member of a traveling circus as one of the side show attractions. In addition to sword swallowing and other daring acts, Duke is also heavily tattooed in a time when tattoos were largely worn by convicts and military. Diving into his vices, demons, and passions, the part covering Duke is the most detailed, and arguably the most poignant part of the tale.
The second part, aptly called The Destructive Path of a Chico Kid, introduces Gary. Gary is a young man moving from High School to college, trying to find his way in life, largely without success. From the more conventional self destructive paths of fervent drug and alcohol abuse, to, thankfully, less common methods like hosting a party that results in the barbecue of a wooly mammoth, and making rent by allowing strangers to staple cash to his chest, Gary tried them all.
The book is wrapped up with the third part exploring the relationship of the two men, brought together by happenstance. By this point, Duke seems to have slain most of his dragons and serves as a most unorthodox life coach of sorts to Gary.
Duke is one of the most well developed characters I have experienced in a long while. His love for his fellow circus performers, and the circus as a whole, is nearly palpable. Duke is clearly someone who loves without reservation, a trait that probably contributes to the abuse of his vices. For all of his inadequacies: drug and alcohol abuse and impulsive and risky behavior, his love for, and protection of, those he cares about is most defining of him.
Duke is not an exception; the author did a fantastic job creating distinct and vibrant characters throughout the book. From the other circus performers like Wubby, a developmentally delayed adult, to Julian, one of the first people Gary meets when he arrived on his college campus, nearly everyone Robinson creates is memorable.
Another surprising aspect of The Sword Swallower and a Chico Kid is the social commentary woven throughout the book. This was surprising not only in that it existed, but also that it was done in a manner that avoided sounding preachy.
Overall, this was an absolutely delightful tale. I will be on the lookout for other works by Gary Robinson as I am now sold on his ability to tell a great story.”

The Beginning Book I

Author Bio:
Margaret Millmore lives on a quaint island in the Puget Sound, Washington with her husband and two cantankerous alarm clocks (better known as cats, who are apparently starving to death at 5 a.m. every single darn morning…).

Her first published works were flash fiction, which were featured on Bay Area artist, Kenny Mencher’s blog, The Welcome Home and Untitled – Luke N. Goode.

In 2011 she published her first full length novel, since then she’s published a three book series, another novel and her current series (via Creativia Publishing) What Haunts Me (Ghost Killer Book 1) and The Edge of the Cemetery (Ghost Killer Book 2), which was awarded the August 2016 Book of the Month award by Long and Short Reviews, and What Hunts Me (Ghost Killer Book 3), which incorporates an epic journey taken by her grandfather in 1915. The majority of her books are set in San Francisco where she lived—previous to island life—for over 26 years.
