Richard is so handsome that I do think I will never find anybody more handsome. He is averagely kind and gentle, unless you stepped on his toes by calling him that ‘name’ he doesn’t like. He knows how to match shirt on trousers, oh, he does that better than anyone. He has this sweet but masculine voice that draws everyone’s attention when he speaks. His hairstyle fit him more than it does Justin bieber. And he is handsomely tall and muscular.

What more do you want?

Well, some will say he has to be caring and rich. Trust me, Richard is more than caring. And do you think he will have so much friends without a considerably amount of wealth. Is what you want a straight answer? Okay, Richard’s dad was a millionaire, and he manages his dad wealth after his dad’s demise. Plus, he is the managing director of the multimillionaire company where he works.

But before you throw yourself on Richard, perhaps you are thinking of becoming his friend. There is something you need to know about him.
He once had ‘bad breath!’

Richard had this stinking odor that smells like some rotten egg emitting from his mouth whenever he spoke. Some people, who didn’t know him before the odor of a thing started, believed he was gentle because of it, but my friend as ever been gentle! He didn’t speak unless he was spoken to.
But to be sincere. Ever since he was castigated by his girlfriend over his mouth unpleasant odor, he tried not to speak even when spoken to. He just nod or shook his head to respond to your words. He also stayed indoor much more than normal.

How did it all started?

I can’t actually say his mouth started pouring out this odor on a specific day, it came without a clear sign like some ‘green grass snake’.

I took my first notice on a day before the day I was to travel. we were about to have some drinks and smoke some cigarette to my send-off, and when I say drinks, I mean alcohol. Richard poured the liquid in cups for ‘us’ (himself, myself and Snow). Then we raised our glasses to say some cheers into the air. Richard was right in front of me, so I couldn’t help but to notice with my nose long like garden hose, that some foul odor escaped his mouth.
I didn’t raise an alarm over it. But I knew for sure that, that smell was from him, and was from his mouth!
After he had some cups of the drink, the odor came out with a different smell. The smell of alcohol took over. From there I knew something was wrong with my dear friend’s mouth, and he seemed to be unaware of it.
But why on earth would I be the carrier of the bad news? Knowing fully well what might happen to him, if he found out. I had seen it drove someone crazy, enough that he isolated himself from everyone. He couldn’t even move close to his own sons.
Besides, I might be wrong. Maybe nothing was wrong with his mouth. Maybe he didn’t have a proper morning brush or he skipped it unintentionally.
That day went by and I can’t tell if Snow too had noticed what I smelt.

The next day, I had to travel and I was back after a month. The first person that came visiting was Richard. Only that I couldn’t tell if it was him in his whole. He had lost some part of him. He never cried, he was always with a smiling face, but now he was shedding tears. He ran toward me and buried his head on my chest, crying profusely like some girl. It was unlike him. He was always a man, never acted a girl! What was the reason behind those hot tears?

Richard was sacked from work. His company complained of his totally stinking mouth.
He was telling me how people coughed, moved a distance from him or, covered their noses when he talked. Just then and right there, I couldn’t stand it anymore after some minutes of frequently holding my breath. I had to let out a cough! He was totally disappointed and embarrassed, I could read it all over his face. I was the only one he could turn too, I was his last hope! Now he made me cough too.

His girlfriend already left! He told me how it happened. He told me that he noticed his girlfriend coughed as he talked and wouldn’t kiss him anymore. He demanded a reason for that. And she had to take it upon herself to let him that know his breath reeked, and she left immediately, since then she didn’t come to visit or place a call over. That spelt the end of ‘them’.

As if that wasn’t enough for a man. Bad breath turned Richard to something else. He would raise a hand in fight against anyone who covered nose where ever he was. I had to stop a fight or two whenever we were together. He was going crazy!
Perhaps, he missed those days when he was surrounded by friends. Now he had no one except half of me because, to be honest, other half of me left him a long time ago.
Snow was no more in town, or maybe he was also keeping his distance from a friend with stinking mouth!
People he (Richard) fought and those around gave him a name, ‘Funk breath’. This was the ‘name’ I told you earlier that he hated to be called. He could kill for it. He almost did!

One day, I said to myself, ‘this must end! Richard can’t continue living like this.’ Our dentists were trying their best in recommending products to us. They diagnosed his bad breath condition to be intra-oral halitosis. But we needed to learn more about this condition if we were to totally eliminate it.
With the zeal of curing Richard off his sole-enemy, we went into research. Then we got to know a lot of things about Bad breath, which is also known as Halitosis. Then I put them down in a book and I named it ‘How my best friend cured his bad breath’.

Guess what? This book includes how Richard got rid of his Halitosis, and now living his life better than the way it was.

I’ve always written, as far back as I can recall anyway. Until 2011, that writing was just for me, or as rambling letters to friends, and travelogues to family. I never thought about why, or if others did similarly, and the thought of publishing never entered my head.

Since I left England in 1979, I’ve travelled widely, collecting experiences, people, and places as I did so. From the blood-soaked streets of Kampala, the polluted dust bowls of the Sahara, or the pristine ice floes of the Antarctic, I’ve gathered and filed them away. Some have recently squeezed through the bars of insecurity and are now at large in the pages of my first three novels.

Although I grew up in Norfolk, UK, I never felt truly at home until I lived in Australia, and that is no doubt the reason my first published novels are set there. All of my books this far have some element of fact in them. I guess it’s hard for any writer not to include events from their life. Our experiences shape our thoughts and the words and actions of our characters.
I sometimes wish I’d become a novelist earlier in life, but then if I had, I wouldn’t have the range of characters and events that I do now.

I now live quietly in a forest house in Germany with five French hens, two Mexican dogs, an Irish cob, and a mermaid who I found on a deserted beach in Bequia.
