The main character is Major David Croft, a special investigator and trouble-shooter for The Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure, a sub section of MI5. He first encounters the virus when he is called to deal with an earlier outbreak in a high security government laboratory, an event which introduces several other major characters and sets the book up for its apocalyptic events. We learn why the virus was released, but not the ultimate goal of its creator.
