I have been a writer in one form or another since my teens (and even before). While fiction writing has always been my first love, I discovered during my career in IT (from junior unix systems administrator through to senior project and infrastructure manager roles) a knack for parsing technical, complex subjects into readily accessible material — a skill that sensible companies have found valuable, as you might imagine.

The work-life balance is an enduring problem for everyone and I found myself suffering from powerpoint poisoning and ganttstipation — which is never fun.

In order to relieve these symptoms, I began to spend less time on IT work and more time gaining additional skills to bolster his personal knowledge base and increase his ability to create books which share that knowledge, in a (hopefully) enjoyable fashion. At about the same time I began to look into the publishing industry from a perspective of writing fiction.

These days publishing independently is sufficiently easy that — looking at this as a business — the risk profile of publishing traditionally is too high, from my perspective. YMMV. So, that’s why I have gone this route, for now. If the traditional publishing world changes some of its behaviour, it may be worth looking at in the future. At times, he feels he was meant to be an innkeeper someplace on the outskirts of Bree in J. R. R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. However, in real life, Andrey Vasilyev is a much-celebrated Moscow-based author, as well as one of the originators of the relatively new, yet insanely popular, LitRPG genre that blends cyberpunk, classic sci-fi, and fantasy.

By his own admission, Andrey started writing in his late 30’s and only “because there was nothing handy to read,” but after his first two books gained nearly instant acclaim, he had to give serious thought to changing his current banking career to that of professional writer.
