The food preparation business has been in my family for many years. My great grandmother was a restaurant owner in Vernon, Texas. As a young child, my father watched Euell Gibbons commercials about Grapes Nuts cereal which were nutty and crunchy. He encouraged us kids to adapt to eating good food for optimum health.

In school, I initially wanted to be a professional violinist. By 10th grade, I became more interested in health and science. I worked at Cooks Children Hospital and Medical Plaza Hospital, studying advanced health sciences. Becoming a nurse after graduation seemed to be my calling.

I enrolled at the local community college. After seeing the requirements of nursing was to dissect a cat; I changed my major to business administration. After graduation I moved to San Diego California, and applied for a job at Mercy Hospital. The healthcare profession seemed to really appeal to me.

I later moved back to Fort Worth Texas. I had several jobs. One of my favorites was at the Child Study Center where I worked with younger children. In 1987 I was hired by the federal government. This position required proper physical conditioning including being the proper weight for my height. I barely edged in with the requirements. I began to seriously study food, portion controlling and exercising. I dropped 12 pounds within a month. Each person was subjected to a random weigh-in, and I wanted to be well below the maximum weight for my height. I never wanted to feel ashamed when stepping on the scale.

I maintained good eating habits for many years. By 1996 I had 2 children and minimal weight gain. In 1997 I lost of the love of my life, my husband. I had a 5 and 16 month old to raise. My world began to slowly spiral out of control. I began to slowly gain weight. By 2005 I was over 200 pounds. It didn’t stop there. I continued eating fatty foods and I passed these habits to my daughters. By 2013, I was over 245 and still in denial. Others would say, “You don’t look too bad.” Now I see that makes no sense at all. My mother passed that same year; contributing to my stress and weight gain.

I decided to make a change. In January 2017, I enrolled in a company sponsored weight loss challenge. I took the compitition seriously, and came out with the top prize. I lost over 30 pounds in 8 weeks. This accomplishment throttled my weight loss by providing the momentum I needed. By May of 2017, I’d lost 40 pounds, and I felt great. I decided to write a book containing the foods that propelled my weight loss. I’m continuing on my weight loss journey with a sense of fulfillment and renewed motivation.
