Hi! I’m M. J. Joachim, wife, mom and grandma. I spent a whole lot of years watching the world change as the Internet slowly evolved; I was right there with it, publishing articles on the web – sometimes getting paid for them, sometimes not. Then blogging became all the rage, so I started a couple of those too. It made it possible to “work from home” while the kids were young. I had a few clients back then, so I was paid regularly.

My Writing Tips blog was born out of my love for reading and writing. Writing book reviews was as natural to me as any other writing project I could think of, and it was often easier too. Plus it benefits the author. If you read a book, review it. The market is saturated, and every review counts. One of the reasons I enjoy writing book reviews so much is because I had a high school history teacher once who told me, “Never let them tell you how to write!” He said he loved my current event projects, and he encouraged my writing more than any other teacher I’ve known.

One of my favorite blogs is Lots of Crochet Stitches, because I love designing and sharing new crochet patterns. It was also born of necessity. Reading crochet patterns is a nightmare for me! I started Lots of Crochet Stitches to share a simple step-by-step process for crochet tutorials. I’m currently writing my first pattern book, something I’ve been wanting to do for years. I also love cooking and canning, both rich with material for future books, so I can share my passion with others. The 2nd Edition of Hot Water Bath Canning will be published soon.

I live in the southwest and love the outdoors! I grew up on the California coastline, so naturally I miss the ocean, but the desert has its own unique beauty to appreciate and explore, something I do whenever I get the chance. My writing focuses on sharing things I know and love with others. Most of it is tutorial and non-fiction in nature. Some, like book reviews, is editorial in nature. Born in 1965, the author grew up on a working cattle ranch in the desert thirty miles from Wickenburg, Arizona, which at that time was exactly the middle of nowhere. Work, cactus and heat were plentiful, forms of recreation were not. The TV got two channels when it wanted to, and only in the evening after someone hand cranked the balky diesel generator to life. All of which meant that his primary form of escape was reading.

At 18 he escaped to Tucson where he attended the University of Arizona. A number of fruitless attempts at productive majors followed, none of which stuck. Discovering he liked writing, the author tried journalism two separate times, but had to drop it when he realized that he had no intention of conducting interviews with actual people but preferred simply making them up.

After graduating with a degree in Creative Writing in 1989, he backpacked Europe with a friend and caught the travel bug. With no meaningful job prospects, he hitchhiked around the U.S. for a while then went back to school to learn to be a high school English teacher. He got a teaching job right out of school in the middle of the year. The job lasted exactly one semester, or until he received his summer pay and realized he actually had money to continue backpacking.

The next stop was Australia, where he hoped to spend six months, working wherever he could, then a few months in New Zealand and the South Pacific Islands. However, his plans changed irrevocably when he met a lovely Swiss woman, Claudia, in Alice Springs. Undoubtedly swept away by his lack of a job or real future, she agreed to allow him to follow her back to Switzerland where, a few months later, she gave up her job to continue traveling with him. Over the next couple years they backpacked the U.S., Eastern Europe and Australia/New Zealand, before marrying and settling in the mountains of Colorado, in a small town called Salida.

In Colorado they starved and froze, started their own electronics business, and had a couple of sons, Dylan and Daniel. In 2005 they shut the business down and moved back to Tucson. The author is currently writing madly and trying to avoid all forms of actual work.

But Himmler admires the qualities of Karl, his bravery and conscientiousness, and so saves him from punishment (likely to have been the firing squad) and adopts him briefly as a confidante before being reunited with Klaus Wagner and being sent to Limoges in Vichy France to take over command of an SS field base at Masset Farm in Oradour-sur-Glane (village infamous for the Oradour massacre).
With the onset of the D Day invasion Karl’s orders are changed while still at Limoges and he and Klaus are due be sent to Paris, under the supervision of General Dunckern, to root out Jews hiding in the city for deportation to the death camps. Of course neither he nor Klaus would entertain such orders and so, before the pair leave for Paris, he arranges an escape route, with the help of a local priest, for Jews from Paris to a temporary safe-house at Oradour then on to Spain.
In Paris he meets Coco Chanel and she helps him to arrange safe passage for a few Jews from the city to Oradour before Karl and Klaus decide to head for the Normandy coast and fight the allied invasion. Klaus is killed en route to Normandy and Karl ends up as a POW in England where Brenda visits him when on leave from the field hospital which travels deeper into Europe following the retreating German forces. After the war, and Karl’s release from prison, they plan to marry.
