It’s sex, of course, but also a whole lot more. My heroes genuinely like and admire their women, though in the beginning this is sometimes obscured by blinding lust. And it is so much fun “being” my heroines while writing about them. You may have noticed that most, if not all, of my heroines are artsy in some way, just like me. It just sort of comes out that way. There’s not much calculation when creating my characters: They literally become alive for me and when my character says—I’m a singer or a designer or I love books—well, that’s that.

It’s fabulous sitting here in my not-perfect body and becoming the beautiful young woman that that ornery alpha male is glomming on to. Of course, my heroines are also in dire peril, which is not so much fun. And which is why I’m the writer and not the heroine (give or take a few years and a few pounds).

One true fact: Looking out of my study across my wonderful terrace I see a bright blue line which is the Ionian Sea. And if I had a powerful enough telescope I could see the Greek temple where Pythagoras taught.

About Echoes of the Widows

Widowhood is characterized by a painful experience. It is an inevitable condition that a woman can never run away from unless she dies before her husband. There is neither joy nor happiness to bereaved widows. Most times their husbands die leaving them with no children. This is the worst thing that can happen to a widow. She has no husband and no children that can take care of her at her old age. A woman that has never experienced the joy of motherhood before her husband dies deserves pity, because death has erased her husband’s name from their community.

There are other set of widows who have been enshrined into motherhood. Such widows have children whom they hope for future joy and happiness. They hope their children to fill in the vacuum which the death of their husbands has created. Most times, their hopes are shattered. Death takes away their beloved children from them. Such widows become lonely and walk in the bliss of solitude and desolation.

Some widows at times find solace in keeping company with people of good conscience. Such fellows become their helpers. They provide for them whatever may be their needs. Such fellows make clothes for them, share good things to them even at a Christmas season; but when the joy and happiness of widows seem to have returned, death slain such fellows by breaking the heart of widows again. It is now that we discover that once a woman is a widow death will always be trying to frustrate her life. We thank God that throughout the Scriptures, we have not seen where a widow is disappointed by God. Though widows face trials and problems and yet God shows them his loving kindness which validates the claim that God is a husband to widows (Isaiah 54:5).

From the samples of the widows under discourse, we see that death reduces them to poverty and they are always prone to dangers of unpaid debts which are owed by their late husbands. Even when a woman is rich, at the moment death declares her widow; the blow usually brings her down from the apex of her affluence because all the family responsibilities are now on her head.

There had never been a widow that has never experienced intense anguish and sorrows unless the women that murder their husbands in order to flirt and enjoy the pleasure of this world. Such women feel good at the death of their husbands. They tend to re-marry even within the year their late husbands are committed to the mother earth. Any widow who can never bear the burden of widowhood is free to re-marry. This is a privilege Paul gives to widows so that they can produce children and have their own homes so that enemy would not have anything to say against them. The advice is given so that young widows will not flirt around and the love of the pleasures of the world may not overpower their devotion to Christ.
From all indications, our sampled widows maintain the principles of widowhood which are characterized by being faithful, trusting in God for sustenance, and having time for fasting and prayers. None of the Christian widows derail from faith even after the death of their husbands. Each time death or problems besiege them, we see God delivering them from their vicious predicaments. This is because since they do not have any other person but God Satan could not prevail against them. Naomi feels the heavy hands of death in her life, her daughter-in-law stands by her in faith and God turns her misery to joy. Ruth becomes a mother of Obed who then revamps the family name of Elimelech. The woman of Nain weeps like all is gone. But the moment Christ comes to the city and sees her weeping; his heart overflows with compassion on her. The widow’s son is revived to life. The misery of the woman is turned to joy. The widows of Joppa when they cried for the death of Dorcas who made them clothes and coats, their joy is also returned to them. We now advise every widow to take courage and believe in God, and he will never abandon them. He has promised that you will no longer live in shame … and will no longer remember the shame of your youth and the sorrows of your widowhood. For your Creator will be your husband” — Isaiah 54:4-5 NLT.

Echoes of the widows
Echoes of the Widows is a study book that explores Scriptures thoroughly to place grieving widows to the comforting hands of God. It unveils the anguish which widows pass through after the death of their husbands. The book is of three parts. Part one deals with the terrible agony of widowhood of Naomi and God’s benevolent mercy and providence. Part two expresses the pains and sufferings widows are subjected to under the cyclic web of their children’s death, and how the love of God prevails over their unspeakable misery. Part three uncovers the oracle of prophet Habakkuk over the wickedness of Judah and how people of faith prevail.

The author, F.E.C. Nwaiwu places himself in the shoes of widows and feels with them the sorrows they pass through. He may not have seen all widows all over the world, but this study guide is his condolence tributes to affected widows. He sampled widows from the Scriptures and finds out that God never allows grieves and sufferings to overwhelm widows. This is true because each time death comes to break the hearts of widows again, God arbitrates and quells down their sorrows. When the sorrow of widows is turned to happiness, it usually happens in a miraculous way. In this note the penman infers that miracles are for those who are helpless.

In the book we see how the society is unfair to widows. The widows are threatened for the debts their late husbands incurred. This unfolds the fact that our society does not show concerns to widows because if such debts are not paid, their children will become bondmen to their creditors. When the widow of a prophet runs to Elisha for help as to clear the debts her late husband owed, we see how God is at the centre of the widow’s situation. The widow was delivered from such a vicious creditor who could not let go the debts the poor prophet owed him.

Thank God that in the Christian society, widows are not left behind. Elijah, Elisha, Dorcas and the apostles prove this point. Dorcas did not leave the widows to die in cold and starvation. She adopted a means to help them cope with the agony of widowhood. But Dorcas died, those widows she helped echo out how miserable they are because the woman that sustains them is no more. As the widows echo their sorrows over the death of their food-and-clothes-provider, God listens to them and Peter is able to raise her to life. Also when some members in the church try to depict how unfriendly the world is to widows, the apostles show them that in Christ there is no discrimination. The Grecian widows are neglected in the daily distributions of food, an idea that suggests how wicked some people are in the house of God. The Grecian widows could no longer bear the injustice and so they begin to murmur over the unfair attitudes. Such murmurings become an echo which the apostles heard and device a possible means to make peace for the interests of the widows and for the gospel of Jesus Christ.

About The Devil in the Cathedral: A Shadow of Death by Fortune Emerence Chinemerem Nwaiwu

The Devil in the Cathedral: A Shadow of Death is a metaphor of lamentation that bemoans the failure of a much looked-up-to leader and that of the led who fail to keep a code of Ten Commandments. This leader Dr. EJANG, who emerges with the rare opportunity which providence gives the minority, squanders it leaving his people not any better than he met them. The play is then a political satire just as it uses the Christian religious parlance to periscope the acts of the individual and the society at large as the cathedral. The irony is that whereas it is Christians that should worship in the cathedral, the people are possessed by the devil himself who rules over their hearts and therefore calls the shots that happen in the universe of discourse of the play to wit, bloodletting, violence, rape, prostitution, political intrigues, betrayal and vendetta. The repercussion is that ʹRABIA, the Niger Delta which should have been benefitted by the facts that it is an oil-producing political sub zone and that it produced the president, is worse off. Events in the play show that neither fact is a point of advantage to the ʹRABIANS.

The play, like the biblical John the Baptist poses the question, is Dr. EJANG the one who is to come, the chosen one, the Messiah, or the ʹRABIANS are to look for another? This question hangs on the lips of everybody till the end when it becomes apparent that the Messiah is yet to come.

I have published three volumes of the Quicksilver Quatrains series to date. They deal vividly, and in an often raw and hard-hitting manner, with a broad variety of themes. The first two volumes follow, in many respects (although not all) a similar structure. The third volume departs from the first two in many respects.
