About Bug

I stood in the clearing in the heart of the woods where the stars looked down upon the night. Head tilted back toward the darkened sky, eyes closed, I listened. The woods bordered my house—all one-hundred and thirty-something acres. Every little sound, every gurgle, rustle, bustle, buzz, hiss, peep, screech, hoot, cry, creak, crack or croak, I knew well. Harvest came every third Friday of the month. On that night, regardless of the weather, I carried the leather pouch into the woods to collect my mother’s specimens.
I had done this for as long as I could remember.

In the life of Bug Martin there are three things that are for certain. One, the third Friday of each month, also known as harvest night, she is forced to go into the woods alone to collect her mother’s shopping list of weirdness. Two, her mother’s less than sound mental state. And finally, the fact that Bug feels like an outsider both at home and at school.

About Brushed by Madness by Dennis Geo

In Spring, 1993, about a year into the Bosnian war, Dennis E. Geo, driven primarily by a thirst for adventure, volunteered to serve with a Croatian HVO unit, an act the majority of people would probably define as madness. It was during that time that the words, collected here as free verse and narrative poetry, appeared and insisted on being recorded.

There is little of the bloody mayhem of the War Story, even less of the philosophical War Poem. The words are coloured by circumstance however it seems to have been a dark, depressive mood that dictated the output rather than any gung-ho spirit. Further, aside from a few superficial repairs, the words are as noted down some twenty-four years ago: for some who were there a lifetime. The words therefore reflect a particular state of mind at a particular time, as documented here in Brushed by Madness: Some Sort of Verse.

The backdrop to this book is 1993 Bosnia Herzegovina. More specifically, the areas around Duvno and Livno where I was then serving as an instructor with the local ‘Hrvatsko vijeće obrane’ (Croation Defence Council) unit.
In common with numerous Western Europeans at the time whose desire for adventure was still unblunted by age or experience, I’d decided that the multi-ethnic Bosnians, following their declaration of Independence and the subsequent assaults that this had provoked, were getting a raw deal from the UN. Consequently, via an ex-military colleague who was already out there I volunteered to help.
Not overly much thought went into the decision, but I do not recall being surprised, during my limited time there, to have witnessed tremendous bravery, tremendous cowardice, and no few horrors. I lost newly-found friends and met people whose comments and actions would affect the rest of my life: partly for the better, mostly, being honest, for the worse. Upon my return home I discovered I was (but probably had been all along) a mildly bipolar depressive. But such is life, eh?
The original notes – in truth, random scribblings – remained forgotten until 2012 when I found them at the bottom of a box of souvenirs. Should you be the type that enjoys poking through such boxes, usually under the table at flea markets; if you embrace rash decisions, if you’re an ex-soldier – plenty of whom will read this and smile where the civvy will frown – or if your taste in free verse encompasses the obvious, the esoteric and the downright depressing, this book should have something for you. The words are offered for what they are: tiny jigsaws from a mind brushed, at least once, by madness.
