I have been a reader for as long as I can remember. I smile at the picture my mind’s eye paints: a skinny kid dragging a hardback copy of ‘Anna Karenina’ to the beach. Yes, that was a beach read.

I remember losing a copy of Marcel Proust’s ‘Swann’s Way’ in a campground on the Outerbanks. I was surprised to find it lying on a sink in the cinderblock bathhouse at the Salter Path Family Campground a few days later.

My sister ribbed me for days that somebody had returned it because it was such a boring read no one would ever keep it. (I got the book back, but sadly, that campground is no longer in existence. So many fond memories. So many good people who visited there year after year.)

I was into the classics as a kid. It may sound painstakingly boring, but I wanted to learn from the best the world had to offer. It was a rich education – Hemingway, Faulkner, Steinbeck, and scores of others.

I went to an estate sale as a teenager. There in the corner of that musty old house was an old gunmetal manual typewriter. It stood on a little table with wheels and 2 spring-levered leaves that folded in or out. I was lucky enough to get it.

I still have that old thing, though I never use it. I keep it for what it symbolizes. In the age of touch pads and such, it’s nice to see the old mechanical type hammers lined up in their neat row, each with their slug of metal type on the end.

Like I said, it’s nice to look at.

For the actual typing, give me touch pads and laptop keyboards.

Sight word acquisition is an important building block in the construction of a child’s ability to read. Once she is able to read all of the words on Dolch’s lists for example, she has access to up to 75% of what is printed in almost any piece of children’s literature. How exactly do teachers and parents help children develop their stores of sight words?There are several proven techniques that any adult can use to teach sight words. Whichever strategies are employed, the best success is seen when one adult with a small number of children at a time. The more one-on-one time a child has learning and practicing sight words with an adult, the greater his chances to integrating them into his long-term memory.
Teaching Sight Words With Pictures
Many learners think in pictures. Whether we realize it or not, we often visualize what we are attempting to learn to help solidify the information in our memories. Think about the last time you needed to get somewhere you hadn’t been before. Even if you used written directions instead of a pictorial map, you probably had a number of visual markers such as unusual sights or signs to help you learn how to get there. Presenting children with illustrations of sight words along with their print versions helps them make important connections between the object and the word. Flashcards or posters with a colorful picture and the word written under it are excellent sight word teaching tools. In addition, teachers or parents can have children draw their own pictures of each word on the same page to help them link the print with the visual.
Listening to and Saying Sight Words
Sight words are not only frequently used in writing, they are also essential to conversational English. Because most of the Dolch sight words are already in children’s verbal vocabularies , learning to read them is simply a matter of connecting the print word to the oral version in their prior knowledge banks. Parents and teachers should make explicit connections between the print version of a word and its sound. Pointing to a word while repeating it is one way to do this. Also, adults should have children say the sight words to help them become actively involved in their learning. This can be as simple as asking them to repeat a sight word while writing it or as involved as having the child search through a pile of sight words written on index cards or sentence strips to find a word that best completes a sentence you have written.
Teaching Sight Words Through Repetition
Children do not learn new words by being exposed to them only once. Repetition is key to sight word acquisition. Young readers should be given opportunities to read and write a new sight word multiple times. Repetitive reading of texts featuring certain sight words is one strategy for helping children commit these words to memory. Also, to practice spelling sight words, parents and teachers can have children write and say aloud words several times. When a child writes and says the word at least five times in a row, she is more likely to commit it to memory. To subtly help children mentally repeat sight words, parents or teachers can create Dolch word walls. As a new sight word is learned it is written in large print on a sentence strip or piece of paper and hung up on the wall in a location where the child is likely to see it often. Not only will repetitive glancing at the word reinforce it in the child’s memory, it is also easily accessible for the parent or teacher to refer to when talking with the child about it.
Sight Words in Context
When children see words used in natural ways rather than in isolation they are more likely to remember them because they develop an understanding of the word’s significance and meaning.

Although I grew up in Massachusetts and my first two books were written there; I’m quick to stay true to my place of birth which is Augusta Georgia, I will always be a Georgia Peach. I’m now an Arizona resident who relocated to this wonderful desert State on a true walk of faith. I had never done anything like it before; I packed up and moved almost three thousand miles away. There has not been a day that I feel that I’ve made a mistake it is quite the opposite I believe I am right where I am supposed to be on this part of my journey.

I hit the Massachusetts foster system at the age of thirteen with my first foster home being the home of a Pastor and his wife. There were other homes that followed sometime with me going in the front door and literally out the back door. One of these homes included the home of a woman who chose to have all the children who entered her home baptized and so I was. Toward the end of my run as a ward of the State of Massachusetts there was Helen Green, who became the mother I always wanted, I miss her very much. I wish she were still here, but she passed many years ago from cancer. I take comfort in knowing that she can see me and has been watching all these years.

After a brief stint in the Army I made my rounds at a number of the Massachusetts Colleges and Universities while struggling with Psych issues which also attributed to my substance abuse and later becoming addicted. I was bruised by my past, but I am no longer a broken woman I have walked through and sometimes crawled fighting to hang on for another day. The memories of child abuse, domestic violence, addiction, and sexual assault are heavy burdens for anyone to bear, but here I stand in God’s hand. Even though my journey had not been one of comfort the Lord told me that I should now enjoy the journey.
I fell in love with music first before I began writing poetry. My mother would play music all the time. At the age of eleven I discovered two things; that I could sing and I love to write poetry. I wrote my first love poem at the age of eleven. Music has always been a major force in my life from a very young age taking on many roles helping me to sometimes forget and at other times remember the good and the bad times in my life. Music is the only constant thing that is still a guiding force in my life from my childhood. I wrote all my books to music. Every stroke of the keys on my laptop was made while listening to songs that I felt were influencing my mood and thoughts as I wrote, I even listened to the sad songs that broke my heart and made me cry.

As you probably have guessed, “The Dino Detective” is what we writers call a “pen name”. I chose “The Dino Detective” rather than my own name for several reasons. The main reason is because I love to research and write about dinosaurs and it makes me feel like a detective as I hunt for information and clues for my next dinosaur book.

When not working on dinosaur books for kids, I am a recently retired school teacher, living in a small town in Canada, with over 30 years teaching experience.
