As the church bells went off marking the half hour, Carol and I looked at each other, wondering where the mysterious intruder into our lives was. As the echoes of the bells faded out, we heard a car door shut and heard footsteps approaching. At first we only saw the shadow of a figure walking along the side of the church, cast onto the walkway, but as the individual got closer, we were able to make out the figure it belonged to.

It was a woman, slightly hunched-over, wearing a heavy overcoat and a large scarf that was wrapped around her head and covered her face so we could not recognize her. She approached us slowly. I could tell she was an older person by the way she walked and her hunched-over posture. When she reached us she sat across from us on the other side of the bench. She did not seem physically threatening but she was still mysterious and I was sure she had evil intentions.

“Who are you,” Carol asked.

“I’m glad to see you followed my instructions,” the woman said, her voice muffled by the scarf that still covered most of her face and mouth, only leaving her eyes exposed.

.”What do you want and who are you?” Carol asked again impatiently.

The woman laughed—an unfriendly laugh. “What’s the matter?” she asked. “Don’t you recognize an old friend?”

Carol and I looked at each other briefly again before we turned back toward the old woman.

“What do you mean?” Carol asked puzzled by the remark.

“Let me be more helpful,” the woman said as she reached up and slowly loosened her scarf and lowered it so we could see her face. She was frail but her face was rigid with a frown that seemed permanently planted on her face.

Carol’s eyes widened in surprise as she recognized our adversary.

I was raised in Grantham, Lincolnshire and attended the King’s Grammar School after passing the Eleven Plus exam. In the latter I clearly remember writing an essay on Oliver Cromwell – my first piece of military writing.

Then came a BA in history and international relations at Nottingham followed by a Master of Philosophy course at the University of York. The subject was the generalship and cavalry of Prince Rupert of the Rhine, my boyhood hero, during the English Civil War. The year I spent researching and writing at York, Oxford and at the British Library in London was a truly wonderful time. However, like all great times it eventually came to an end and I was forced to find employment.

By this time I was living in London and started work at the London Borough of Haringey. It was hell, but it did allow me to finish my thesis. Then fate took a hand and I landed a job as a research officer with the Defence Intelligence Staff in Whitehall. Writing top-secret intelligence reports was highly exciting, until I realised that their security clearance was so high that only a handful of people were cleared to read them. In 1990, therefore, I decided to apply for a job in the publishing industry as an editor. I joined a small company in said position in the summer of that year and the rest, as they say, is history.
