I am an American author. My father was Romany and my mother was Jewish, When I was very young I learned about the Holocaust. I couldn’t understand how something like this could happen. So, I began to research and learn more. I met with survivors. I even met with children and grandchildren of SS officers. But I still had no answers. I cannot say that I have all of the answers to all of my questions even now. But what I do know is that soon all of the survivors will be gone. Their message must be remembered, the sacrifices that they made must not be forgotten. And so I humbly and with the utmost humility try to tell their stories. It is painful, but I must convey the darkness and horror of the time, but I also want the world the know and celebrate the unsung heroes. Because there were many ordinary people who acted in heroic ways. I realize that writing these books is a great responsibility. I pray every day that I am able to do this correctly. I am trying to reach out and touch many people, not with the message of the horrors but with the promise of hope. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for considering my work. It is an honor that I never take lightly.

I grew up in Minnesota where I spent many long, cold winters making up stories and dreaming about being a writer and traveling the world. But saner people urged me to attend the University of Minnesota where I studied behavioral science. Author–Richard Mason has always managed to incorporate writing into his accomplished life, whether writing professional reports as a geologist, books in the Sahara Desert, or columns about environmental issues. Let’s be extremely moderate, and say 100 new readers per month (Of course, you have a much bigger number in mind, but let’s be extremely humble), 1200 reader, follower, fan per year. You could not only follow your passion but even finance it by having decent traffic. How many new customers are you losing every month by not taking your business to the web? 100, 200, 500 per month? How much is it in dollars, for your particular business? $ 1 000, $ 2 000, $ 5 000 per month? How much is it in a year? $ 12 000, $ 24 000, $ 60 000, or more? So, if you are losing even meager $ 500 per month from your business just because you haven’t started your site; or are losing 100 followers on your blog every month that you haven’t created because of fear of losing it. You are wasting time, big time. Life is short.

IT STARTED WITH A HACK AND ALMOST ENDED THERE
Niko was there, where many of you are now or were some time ago. Having years of experience in brick-and-mortar business he was thinking it was time taking his business to the web. And this was long before WordPress was around. But he had two significant issues as many small business owners have. Insufficient human resources and distrust to some outsider who will do everything for him for additional expenses and what is most important will have the hold on too much sensitive information and power. Niko was not comfortable with sharing with a stranger so much and being dependent on somebody (sooner or later it always comes to it).
Niko chose the path any entrepreneur would follow in his circumstances. Started learning and doing it all by himself. Learning how to create a website and how to fill it with content was easy. Especially, considering his business, small community newspaper. He had too much content to upload and no free hands around to for help. As in any small business, every person was playing many different roles.

DISREGARDING SITE SECURITY IS COSTLY
He never thought about the security of his website, it seemed he needed to obtain another master degree to do it, and he couldn’t believe somebody would bother to hack his beautiful site. First of all, it was just a tiny local newspaper, and no valuable data or resource on the site could be interesting and useful for anyone, except Niko and his local community.
But, just he finished designing and uploading content accumulated for years of hard work and started to feel that he accomplished some Sisyphus’s work – his site got hacked.
Just a bunch of beginner hackers hacked his site. Destroyed months of hard work just for fun and informed about this “accomplishment” the whole world.

KILL THEM ALL
Niko dropped the idea to go to the web for a while. He didn’t want to experience anger, frustration, and helplessness again. You might laugh, but out of anger, he wanted to track them down and give them some life lessons. Yes, now he smiles about it too, but now, not then. After a while, it was already not about to not being ahead of the pack. It became necessary to have a web presence, not to be behind of everybody.
Niko has two options as many of small business owners, or bloggers, hire a guy who will do all the security maintenance, pay and trust him too. The second option was to learn and do it himself like many other things in his business. He didn’t like either of them, too expensive, and too time-consuming. So, time went by and opportunities as well.

THAT VERY EUREKA MOMENT
One day he realized that he didn’t need to be an expert in Automobile Engineering (a branch of study of engineering which teaches manufacturing, designing, mechanical mechanisms as well as operations of automobiles), to drive the car safely. He just needed to understand general principles and to follow well formulated, easy to follow instructions.
The same goes for WordPress security. You don’t need to be IT geek. You just need to follow well formulated and tested instructions and common sense, if you can get hands on it, of course.
So, he did, took some classes, consulted some geeks and created his own “driver’s manual” for WordPress security, without obtaining PhDs in several disciplines.
It sounds simple, but it took time, sometimes he thought the Ph.D. track was easier to follow.

THIS GUIDE WAS NOT INTENDED FOR PUBLICATION
The beauty of this guide is that initially it was not created to be published. It was just a notebook for personal use and reference. Time and again some things were added, and some erased.
A couple of times friends asked to borrow it. But stenographic notes made for one’s personal use didn’t make too much sense for others, especially beginners, and needed long phone conversations to fill the gaps. Shortly notebook become a Word document. Niko started to add some more words to his notes. To save time, energy, and avoid ridicules telephone bills (some friends living overseas were asking to “call back when have time”), Niko started to edit his notes for others. It was not for personal use anymore. The longer this Word document was getting, the shorter phone conversations were becoming. After a couple of borrowings without a phone call, Niko realized that he had it: easy to understand, easy to follow WordPress security guide.
