Finding Me―and Them: Stories of Assimilation records the life of a person with a physical challange. It is the storied progression of someone coming to terms with himself, and how he sees the world seeing him. The nine stories shed light on different aspects of growing up with a noticeable handicap.
“Ramification for Shadenfreude” is the only story that embellishes a true event with characters and fictious situations. It is the story of Arron Sullivan (me) searching for one half of his biological parents. Characters derive thinly veiled joy out of troubles he encounters. The people he meets each play a role in facilitating or debilitating Arron’s search and implicit meeting with his mother. Religion, and the facile promise of friendship, adds another dimension to Sullivan’s trials.
Many of the other short stories travel a road (sometimes the one less taken) toward understanding a world perceived as handicapped unfriendly. The character tempts people’s issues with him as he sees them. In “A Cheeky Lad” he travels to a remote village in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides. The lad (a name earned later back at the University in Birmingham, England) pushes the envelope and goes where he is quite certain no one in his class will be. He is alone, against the odds of a handicap and perhaps his biracial ethnicity.

Author Michael P. Amram is a graduate of the University of Minnesota. With a BA degree, in 1989, he began writing short stories. Much prose and poetry was influenced by his life and experiences as a disabled individual living and working in a very urban part of Minneapolis. Amram was, however, raised in a liberal, middle-class, suburban environment. The contrast of these two worlds, the disparity, seeing the use (and abuse) of liberal programs he grew up seeing come to fruition, influenced his writing.

Amram’s prose first appeared in novel form in The Orthodoxy of Arrogance in 2013.
