Bio2 – I spent a youth wanting to be in the military and an adulthood doing it. College confirmed I could write and given one goal out of the way (a military career), I’m scrambling to find a purpose beyond the customary “husband” “father” etc.

Writing is an option and this work’s theme has a purpose, a theme I’m emotionally connected to on many levels. Hoping not to be a one-trick pony, I’ll start another work when this series completes. In the interim, I’ll be dealing with a mortgage, credit cards, keeping cars maintained and trying to crack the code on talking sense into male teenagers — oh, and preparing shotgun readiness the older my daughter gets.

C.L. Lucas (Christopher Lee) was born in New Iberia, Louisiana in ’69 growing up along the Bayou Petite Anse, a few miles from Avery Island where Tabasco sauce is made. He enlisted in the Navy after high school, served in the Gulf War before attending Ole Miss on scholarship where he received a B. A. in Journalism. After commissioning as an Ensign in the Navy, Lucas proceeded to flight school, earned his wings and cruised twice on the USS Truman. His Navy commitment complete, Lucas transitioned to the Air Force to fly B-52s from Barksdale, AFB, before commanding the 3rd BCT, 3rd ID TACP. During this time, Lucas deployed to Iraq then Afghanistan earning a Bronze Star and Combat Action Medal while supporting Combined Joint Special Operations Forces, Afghanistan (CJSOTF-A). Lucas received an M. S. in strategic studies before retiring from the military at the rank of Major after 24 years of service. It worked. I’ve been hooked ever since.
For the past two decades, I’ve been conducting an experiment. Is it possible to create a new context for my life that I feel is “divinely inspired” and true to my deepest values, my sense of what’s possible, and true to my soul and spirit? If it is possible, what will be the results? Will it enhance my life? Will I experience a true sense of purpose and meaning? Will I know at the end of the experiment that my life has mattered?
Becoming a writer of speculative fiction and non-fiction that contributes to people’s lives, have been an integral parts of this experiment, as was co-founding Life On Purpose Institute with my wife in 1996, being a coach to assist others to create their own life on purpose experiment, and training other Life On Purpose Coaches.
Since selling my veterinary practice in the late 80’s to pursue a career as a writer and life coach, I’ve published over 350 magazine articles in such publications as Family Fun, Boys’ Life, Body and Soul (then New Age Journal), Yoga Journal, and Better Homes and Garden, to mention just a few. Many of these have been part of my pet writing project: Project Purpose: to write and publish articles about people whose lives are dedicated to a bold and inspiring purpose or vision.
From magazine writing, it was a natural next step to graduate to writing books, starting with visionary nonfiction — books that engage and encourage while also entertaining. Then there are some dreams that hang around and won’t go away, no matter how many time you push them to the back burner. That’s the case with the dream that began as an eleven-year-old boy. When I was 17 years old, I had to leave my home town because I went to study at university in another town. So, I found myself in a strange city where I did not know anyone. I rented an apartment, which I shared with two roommates to pay less money. Soon my roommates became my friends. Gradually, my life was getting better.
However, there was one circumstance that really troubled me. My friends preferred eating fast food, such as cheeseburgers and French fries. I started going with them to fast food restaurants. But that junk food did not agree with my sensitive stomach, which reminded itself through pain and indigestion.

When I’m not writing, I tend to be either reading or playing video games. Fantasy and sci-fi novels, Japanese manga, RPGs- if it has a fantastical element to it, I’m interested. Reading in particular has always been a huge passion of mine. There’s nothing I enjoy more than a well told narrative and engaging characters. On the other hand, I have a bit of a masochistic streak when it comes to movies and books as well. Oddly enough, I find immense satisfaction in reading a terrible book or watching a horrible movie. Well, part of that enjoyment probably comes from subjecting my friends to the same thing afterwards. When I was 17 years old, I had to leave my home town because I went to study at university in another town. So, I found myself in a strange city where I did not know anyone. I rented an apartment, which I shared with two roommates to pay less money. Soon my roommates became my friends. Gradually, my life was getting better.
However, there was one circumstance that really troubled me. My friends preferred eating fast food, such as cheeseburgers and French fries. I started going with them to fast food restaurants. But that junk food did not agree with my sensitive stomach, which reminded itself through pain and indigestion.
The thing is that from the very childhood, I suffered from poor health. My stomach was my weak point. So, my mother made me keep to a strict diet. Then I felt well. After moving to another town, I completely forgot about my diet, and tried to focus only on my studies. One day, after eating in a fast food restaurant, I felt so bad that I made a promise to myself I would start cooking healthy dishes. And I kept my promise.
To start with, I went and bought a recipe book. I started cooking simple dishes, such as mashed potatoes and baked fish. But my stomach was grateful for that. I treated my dishes to my friends. And they enjoyed them to such an extent that they even stopped eating junk food.

The author’s personal journey:

On August 13, 2016, I began my journey when I lost my father to suicide. I’d like to say I’ve walked it gracefully but I haven’t. Shock, disbelief, and instant devastation. Tears mixed with anger followed by questions that will never be answered. The grief journey after losing a loved one to suicide begins, and unfortunately, it never ends. Pain is real, but so is hope.

Upon searching for ways to cope with my loss, I found very little I could relate to. I needed raw emotion from fellow survivors of suicide loss. I needed to know I wasn’t crazy for the way I felt. I needed to know I wasn’t alone. I needed to hear from others who sat in the mess of a painful, shattered life. What was helping them begin the healing process through their grief?

My story is for those of us left behind to agonize over ‘what if’s’ and ‘why’s.’ It is also for anyone who wants to better understand suicide loss. It’s a roller coaster, but it is not one that you have to face alone.

Author Bio:
R.J. Belle began writing as a teenager as a way to express her creative side. After spending fifteen years in the lending industry, she left her career to write full time and published the thriller “First One Down,” introducing Detective Paul Sutton. The second novel in the series will release in the summer of 2017.

R.J. has also written “After: The Battle Has Just Begun,” eight true stories of combat-injured service members who sustained life-altering injuries and the impacts on the caregivers who support these men. 100% of the proceeds from this book benefit Warrior Foundation~Freedom Station.

R. L. Blalock’s love of reading started young. As a child, her father would read stories to her before bed every night. In middle school, she and her best friend bonded over books and writing.
