Ashley misses the sweet boy her son used to be–before the “incident.” Now, “he was a 13-year old boy heading toward a life in prison if she didn’t take drastic action.” (5) What happened that changed him so suddenly? Perhaps the death of his father.

Now, Ashley is forced to leave the city life and move to the country side of Alabama, hoping to keep her son out of trouble and away from the criminal activities. After all, “country life had its benefits: fresh air, wide-open spaces, and less opportunity for hoodlum-induced trouble, all things that could do a boy like Emmett some good.” (9) Still, that may not be enough.

Meanwhile, Wade is also struggling with guilt over his brother’s incarceration.
Ashley and Wade both have the same goal: to knock some sense into their loved ones and save them from their pain, their anger, their life.

One day, Wade catches Emmett rummaging in his garage, and, suddenly, it’s like he can see his brother’s life all over again. He can see the young boy’s bubbling anger and unwavering resentment toward his father. Instantly, the two boys sense a comfort around each other and realize they share the same emotional turmoil. The same goes for Ashley, who feels drawn to the husky, southern gentleman with a ravenous appetite and skilled hands.

I liked how Wade was able to be a strong role model for Emmett. That male bonding can really motivate and enlighten someone. The romantic aspect between Wade and Ashley was also heartwarming, especially when Ashley is still haunted by the final frightening moments of her husband’s life. These characters showed great strength and compatibility, meandering through their inner qualms against the backdrop of luscious country scenery infused with the southern aromas of chicken-fried steak and home-style apple pie.

Warm, touching, and charming, this well-written novel captivates readers with its endearing characters and emotional plights. Mended is all about breaking and repairing; it’s about getting lost and finding your way. Story is enriched with a delicious cornucopia of guilt, pain, and love– powerful ingredients blended for the perfect combination of a sweet and savory tale. You’ll want to eat it up!

I am first and foremost a loving (and sometimes nagging) wife and a mom of a beautiful little boy, but when I’m not wrangling my toddler or covered in messes, I write and try to manage a career as an indie author.

There are solutions. We must recognize evil is real, and hate is pure evil. Tolerance of hate is the same as intolerance, and we are too tolerant of hate. People who commit acts of terrorism do not exist in a vacuum. Most of them know people who recognize the signs of radicalization. This problem must be exposed and even ridiculed. If a group cooperates with a despotic regime, foreign terrorist organization, or a domestic terrorists; the media should demand answers. Finally, we must acknowledge that hate also destroys the hater. This fact can be useful in turning extremists back from the path of radicalization.

Writing fiction has been of interest to me for as long as I can remember. One of my favourite things in school was when the teacher gave us free rein to write a fiction story of our choice, I actually found one of these that I’d received an A* for in my old student record of achievement file. It was strange reading it back, ten pages of A4 painfully scripted by hand in fountain pen. I am only thirty four years of age and ball point had obviously been invented, so god knows why I slogged it out in fountain pen, but I did. After school my writing literally stopped, I got caught up with other things that people in their late teens enjoy, mainly partying and getting drunk if I remember correctly, and working to pay for the aforementioned activities. Even in the sixteen years’ gap between that last hand scribed story I found and the publishing of Watchers, I tried many times to start a book. Sadly any project I tried never got past the first three chapters. I even started writing Watchers in 2004, shortly after meeting my long term partner and now fiancée, Laura. The start was a little different but the character names and general plot were the same, and that’s how it began. Although at that point I did not get past chapter two. Whilst I’d often think up cool or quirky ideas for stories I’d never get round to writing, Watchers would not go away. For near on ten years it remained where I thought it always would, in my head. Then as the indie book began to take hold I saw my chance to get this story out there, now all I had to do was actually write the thing. I penned the first two chapters and let a friend read them, asking for an honest review, when she literally demanded I carry on writing it so she could see the story unfold I knew it was now or never, and after nearly a year’s research and writing I finally finished the book, even leaving it open enough for a follow up novel if the story obtained some good reviews, which it did. So, being a glutton for punishment and still not quite able to believe that I’d written a novel length story, I started book two. My plans were to have it written and published by now, but we had a pretty shitty 2013 with a number of close family deaths, this saw the writing of book two well and truly put on hold. Thankfully, we did have one ray of light in that dark year: my son Finley was born in January. Whilst being great fun and now a year old, he certainly does not give me much time to put finger to keyboard. SB

that this child is ‘not of God’. Mariah and Jordan grow apart and a home often filled with
laughter became void of it. It was a trying time. Determination aided this family as they
pushed forward in an effort to not just make the road ahead easier for Jordan but, with
consideration for all those transgender children that will follow.
The book is a deeply personal account of the steps this family took to keep their family
together, to push forward and help Jordan become the healthy and happy young man he is
today. Each step of Jordan’s transition from female to male is documented in the hopes it will

Her heart was beating so fast she thought it was going to jump out of her chest. Flashes of brick walls and floorboards mixed with the blind spots in her vision. Her surroundings were blurry. The spots were getting bigger. There was tightness in her chest. A figure stood over her and stretched out a hand. She screamed.

She started slamming her fists against the stone on top of her. Her hoarse voice ripped out of her throat, causing her pain. She screamed for help until her throat felt filled with broken glass. She couldn’t breathe. Her whole body shook. She needed to get out of there. There was no air, no light, no nothing. A faint cracking noise sounded. Her hand rammed through the stone, breaking it into a thousand pieces.

A gust of air shoved its way in. It calmed her a little. Only faint light streamed down from the medium sized hole at around head level. She reached up, breaking the cracked pieces of stone around the hole, worming her way out. The light was blinding.

She inhaled as deep as she could despite the fact the air felt like ice shards stabbing her lungs. She was afraid it was going to escape from her again. Scrambling out of the stone box she sat down on the floor, hugging her knees to her chest, shivering. Her mind was swirling around and around. When she closed her eyes all she could see were the bloody floorboards and the shadowy figure.

She sat there, rocking back and forth until she was no longer shaking and her breath was steady. Her eyes were now somewhat used to the light, and the only thing that hurt was her slowly swelling hand. She looked around.

There were several stone coffins on slabs all around. She was in a mausoleum. She looked down to the one she had burst from. The lid was in pieces, as well some of the sides. But the first name was still legible. Prudence.

No, no, no. I’m not dead. She felt her heart speed up again. She was out of breath as flashes of a knife holding hand filled her mind. Then she was back on that floor, heart in her throat, desperately trying to get away. Need to get out. Need to run.
