Why did you write The Exiles?

I wanted to showcase the absurd status that we designate for specific people at the expense of others.  I mean we all ‘sin,’ and the ‘haves’ verses the ‘have not’ are really based on the people caught sinning verses the ones that got away with their sin.

What did you do before writing?

I worked for a few newspapers. I bar tended.  I conducted research for research tanks across the U.S., and I was employed by a few government agencies, doing research as well.

Which job was your favorite?

Bar tending.  You dealt with people living in the moment, ready to fully act on impulse.  Crazy times because you never knew what you were going to get- a fight, a strip tease, any emotional outburst could happen.  I was surrounded by human volcanoes, loaded with emotion, ready to erupt.

Chuck Palahniuk.

With all the competitive avenues to tell a story- movies, television, social media, YouTube, on and on, as well as the fact that people’s attention spans are nothing now, his ability to engage readers with words alone is extraordinary.

When my volleyball & basketball career came to an end.  I wanted to play games for a living, but I failed at try outs.

I currently live in the United Kingdom with my wife and children. After college I joined the Royal Navy where I served in operational theatres such as Kosovo and Iraq.
After concluding my service I then went into Law Enforcement making my way to the rank of Detective.
I love writing and especially punchy and thought provoking stories. I am currently in the planning stages (which means pondering) my next book. The subject matter within my first book Under the blood red sky is more relevant than ever. This is my first book and contains certain personal elements to me. It was written from the heart, which I am sure will be conveyed. Much research went into capturing time and place, as well as the dangerous and explosive climate in Tamaulipas at that time. The characters are purely fictitious, but the one thing I sought was originality when committing them to the story. Rather than the stock macho men of old, I can assure the reader that the likes of Maria, the grieving mother who rises up against the Cartels and Rojo, the psychotic and sadistic child soldier will stay with the reader long after they finish the book. As well as being a story about hardship and families struggling under the turmoil, there are a number of twists and turns throughout.
Reading novels that pack a punch, my favourite authors and inspiration comes from the likes of James Elroy and Cormac McCarthy.
Aside from the writing I enjoy keeping myself as fit as anyone who both works and has a young family can. I love being involved with my son’s football (Soccer for my American cousins) which involves assisting with his team and cheering him on from the standard wet and windy sidelines.
I hope you enjoy what is my first novel as much as I did writing it.

The participants enjoyed the program so much that they bugged the two to properly launch it, using the content from the emails and meetings, and voila – 30 Days of Doing was Born!While inspired by Bermondsey’s craftspeople, Kyle and Casey were also both moved when they came across the history of Benjamin Franklin’s Leather Apron Club (The Junto). Franklin’s Leather Apron Club was a group of local workers including surveyors, printers, and a barman, who met frequently with specific goals in mind: to better themselves, to gain knowledge, to support each other, and to give back to their community.

Kyle and Casey looked around at their group and realized that perhaps they were in the midst of forming their own Junto. They thought they could help other craftsman and small businessmen around the world to do the same by providing their content online and encouraging participants to gather and discuss the content.

So, 30 Days of Doing is aiming to create an online community, and ultimately local in-person communities of “Doers” who can: share their successes, mistakes, strengths, and weaknesses; to escape corporate structure if desired; to support one another; and (arguably) most importantly – to give back to the community and the planet in some way.

WHO IS CASEY?
Casey grew up in southeastern New England before attending uni in Washington DC. She spent several years as a field geologist for the US Geological Survey and an environmental consulting firm, rocking her way through a good portion of the southern US.

After moving across the pond to London with her husband, she took up a part-time barista and scone-baking gig that turned into a full-time business manager role with a London coffee shop, while embracing all the travel opportunities that living in the UK and Europe have to offer.

She is now juggling several projects – launching a blog, creating a cookbook, managing digital marketing projects for a healthcare software start-up, and of course, building a network for 30 Days of Doing.

WHO IS KYLE?

Kyle grew up in Brixton, South London, where his first go at side hustling was selling pirated video games on Yahoo at age 11. Since the pirated video game sales didn’t exactly make enough to have it completely made, Kyle attended Oxford University to study history.

Following graduation, he moved to Vietnam where he co-founded Vietnam’s first private free-to-air TV station. Despite not having any previous experience with television or co-founding a business (aside from his teenage side hustles), the station was on air within 9 months and grew from 2 co-founders to 200+ employees within a year.

A move to the U.S. was next, where Kyle studied in the MBA/MFA program at NYU. Eventually, he dropped out of the “official” film part (MFA) but he continued to attend the useful classes and work on productions. He didn’t see the point in the expensive fees, so instead focussed on the useful classes he could attend.

The next move to Beijing to learn Chinese also involved setting up a business selling Chinese posters. While the idea turned out to be fruitless and “dreadful”, according to Kyle, it was a valuable learning experience about how to learn from your mistakes. He pivoted the business from an expensive, un-profitable poster selling business into a language learning service – sensiblechinese.com – which is now one of the top Chinese language learning blogs online.

Kyle then moved back to Bermondsey where he found a new, tight-knit community (which included Casey). From Bermondsey, he started a digital marketing agency in which he helps others learn to sell their products online using the skills he learned from building sensiblechinese.com. His current clients include an Indian wedding company, a private Harley Street hospital group, a coffee company, and more.
