Clayton Graham was born and raised in the cobbled streets of Stockport, near Manchester UK. He graduated with a degree in Aerospace Engineering from Salford University in 1966 having attained a Student Apprenticeship with English Electric Aviation.

He settled in Victoria, Australia, in 1982. A retired aerospace engineer who enjoyed working in structural design, research and development, Clayton has always had an interest in Science Fiction and where it places humankind within a universe we are only just starting to understand. 2015 began with a prognosis of days to weeks. The year brought pneumonia, aspiration, septic shock, and something called ECMO. As her health declined, we were rejected by five consecutive transplant hospitals and were running out of options. As she fought through one battle after the next, I learned that the best thing I could do was to show up every day and be in her corner. I cried a little, worried a lot, and laughed a surprising amount.

I tried to keep her spirits up, her body strong, and her mind focused on the prize as I slowly morphed into an overprotective mom. I learned that walking with a ventilator was possible even though talking was not. I learned that you need to find joy in every moment because those moments are limited. I even learned of Rebecca’s weird affinity for tapioca pudding even though she was not yet in her seventies.

I also learned some universal lessons that helped me get through the situation, both in the hospital and outside of it. I hope that these lessons can help others going through challenging periods in their lives and in the lives of loved ones.

As of late 2016, NASA has verified the existence of 3414 exoplanets, that is, planets orbiting other stars in our Milky Way galaxy. “It’s very exciting,” said NASA’s Dr. William Kinney. “It opens up the universe. Now we know that we’re just one of billions and billions of small worlds that are very much like ours. If you extrapolate that to our galaxy as a whole, the calculation based on the Kepler data is that there are around 40 billion planets like earth.”
The 40 billion planets “like earth” is the number calculated to be in our galaxy alone, and the Milky Way is only one of the estimated two trillion or so galaxies. This makes a rough estimate of the number of planets in the known universe to be 80 sextillion (an 8 with 22 zeros behind it). To offer a frame of reference for that number, picture all the grains of sand on every beach on earth, multiply that picture by 16, and you may get an impression of how many planets are out there.

VARANGIAN is the first, ORIGINS the latest, which goes back in time to reveal who Harald was, how he developed into the legendary figure he became in parts 1 and 2. I shall begin work on the 4th volume in early 2017. I also have plans for a Viking book or two based in the Wirral back in the early 9th century. I’ve been doing a lot of research around this, my fascination springing from the numerous Scandinavian sounding names of towns and places in the area where I grew up – Thingwall, Irby, Pensby, all good, Viking names!
My most successful series is that of the Western hero Detective Simms, who works for the Pinkerton Agency. A veteran of the Mexican War, Simms is a frontiersman, hard and resourceful. The first in the series (which gives the series its name) is UNFLINCHING and has proved to be my most successful book to date. I have written four in the series so far and the 5th is due out by the end of the year. It is a good series of novels which I think will appeal to anyone, not just lovers of the genre, who enjoys fast-paced mysteries. My goal is to write at least 10 of these books, whilst writing some stand alone Westerns too, with the occasional thriller thrown in.

I love to create worlds, characters, events. Often I have a plan to follow, and I know the direction, but what happens in-between is sometimes not even up to me. Things simply take over. So, to sum up, there may be a lot to do, but I love it and when you love something, it is never a chore!

People who know me have asked how on earth I find time to write. After all I have a full-time job, an occasional weekend job, a husband and four kids to take care of, so where does time to write fit in? Sakura is an average teenage girl but her mother has a secret. Sakura knows that her mother is keeping something from her. Sakura looses herself in projects of her own instead of focusing on what is missing between her and her mother.
One day at school Sakura finds strange paper in her locker. She does not know that the strange paper will changer her life forever.
Sakura brings the paper home and goes about her day as usual. At night, a monster breaks into her house, injures her mother and kidnaps her father! The monster is injured by the fight with Sakura’s mother. The beast startes to fall into the portal. He pulls Sakura down with him.
Sakura finds herself in another world! She knows that her father was taken into this world. The man who came to control the monster tells Sakura that he father has been taken to the palace.
The monster makes his former master tell Sakura the information she wants to know. He has been tamed by her and turned away from the man who tried to force him to do things through pain. Sakura is learning that taming animals is one of her talents.
Sakura follows the path she has landed on hoping that it will lead to a town or village where she can learn more. The path takes her to a message post. Sakura learns that the only way to get to the palace is through the woodlands. The woods are said to be dangerous.
The only people who can make it through the woodlands are specially trained messangers. Sakura asks to be trained. It is the only way she can see to get to her father. Sakura proves that she is ready to become a messanger by killing a charging bear.
Sakura walks through the woods on her first run as a messanger. She does not see any living thing on the road until a cloak-covered man approaches her. She thinks that he must be another messanger and she invites him to make camp with her.
The man takes his cloak off and he reveils that he has the face of a lizard. The man is called Izacar and his people tell a legend about a warrior that brings peace instead of war. The only problem is that the warrior cannot come into a kingdom without the king or queen’s permission.
Sakura tells Izacar that she is going to the palace as a messanger. She agrees to bring his message to the palace for him.
Sakura is traveling by herself the next day. She sees another person the road but it is not a cloaked figure this time — it is a young man, close to Sakura’s age. He is wearing rough clothes made from animal skin and it looks like he has not had his hair cut in quite some time.
Sakura plans on ignoring him until he shows her a necklace he found. The necklace is a locket that belonged to Sakura’s mother. The necklace was engraved with odd designs so she is sure that it is her mother’s.
Sakura wants to know everything about the necklace: Where did he find it? Was there anyone else around? Could the necklace had been there for some time or is the place used regularly?
The young man, Rormic, takes Sakura to his mother who can help explain how the necklace was found.
Rormic was raised by the elks (giant animal clans who can talk have been part of Japanese and American culture for centuries) after his parents mysteriously died. Rormic is just excited to meet another human and he is more than ready to help.
Rormic’s mother is an elk and a seer. She can see the future at times. She saw that her son needed to go to the healer’s fields. The healer looked after Rormic in the winters so that he would not have to be out in all the elements. Rormic knows her fields well. He found the necklace in her fields and the necklace tugged Rormic towards Sakura. He followed the pull to her.
Rormic’s mother now sees that Rormic and Sakura must travel together to the Great Warrior. The Great Warrior is the man Izacar spoke of who will bring peace if the king and queen let him. Sakura agrees to meet this warrior but tells Rormic that she must go to the palace to free her father first.
Rormic agrees to help Sakura free her father. He has never been away from the elk tribes’ lands and he is anxious to see more people and bigger cities. The pair of them travel together.
Rormic’s mother kisses him goodbye and the two od them can now see a glowing path that the mother put there to guide her son. Rormic and Sakura follow it, thinking that it will lead to the palace.
The path takes them to the land of the Jaguar Tribe. The jaguars are a proud people and they do not like finding strangers in their territory. The jaguars keep Rormic and Sakura in a prison. Sakura and Rormic both tell the tribe why they were found on their land but the jaguars keep them imprisoned until they believe that Sakura and Rormic are telling the truth.
The jaguars take Rormic and Sakura to see the Great Warrior. The Warrior sends Rormic and Sakura into the palace to bring back information. He wants to know who the war-mungerers are in the palace. Sakura agrees to do this after the warrior provides them with letters saying that they are new serving staff.
Guards arrest Rormic when the two of them enter the royal city. The guards accuse Rormic of being a theif. They use the necklace as proof that Rormic was stealing. The emperor’s councilor traveled through the elk lands last year and he rememebered Rormic. He has a list of things that were missing after the trip. The councilor sends Rormic to the dungeons.
Sakura tries to leave the palace to tell the Great Warrior what has happened but palace guards stop her. The councilor tells Sakura about a royal family from far away and their young daughter. The king and queen died during a war but the young princess fled to a far away place. She was never seen again but the princess whore a necklace like the one found on Rormic. It is rumored that the family could tame beasts of any kind.
The councilor suspects that Sakura knows where the lost princess is but Sakura only tells the councilor that she is from Iron Town (a small village in the Jaguar Tribes’ land). She knows that telling him the truth would be a mistake.
The councilor has Sakura locked in one of the palace’s guestrooms. He wants to keep her away from the dungeons… because Rormic is not the only prisoner.
Rormic is locked in chains in the dungeons. Another man is chained to the wall next to him. The man tells Rormic that his name is Brad Pilletera (Sakura’s father). Rormic recognizes the man’s last name and tells him that Sakura has come to rescue him.
Brad tells Rormic that Sakura cannot be here. The councilor and his men are really looking for Sakura and are only holding him because of his connection to her. He warns that Sakura does not know what she is walking into. She does not knoe about her family.
The councilor wants to use Sakura to tame the beasts and create an army but he needs to know that Sakura really is the lost princess’ decentant. The councilor can tell that Brad and Sakura are from the same place because they have the same accent.
The councilor has been drugging and questioning Brad to find out more about Sakura. Sakura hears her father cry out in pain and runs into the room. The councilor learns that Brad is Sakura’s father and he plans to use Brad to get Sakura to do what he asks.
He lets Sakura walk about the palace freely because he believes that she will not leave without her father or her friend. The councilor hopes that allowing Sakura to see her family will make her feel indepted to him.
Rormic does what he can to take the councilor’s attention away from Brad but it usually only got the guards more upset. Rormic gets himself into trouble while Sakura tries to meet allies in the palace.
There are many people in the palace who do not want a war. Some politicians just don’t like the councilor. Sakura has to decide which of these she can trust without letting the councilor know she is working against him. She needs to learn who to trust.
Sakura meets Kiru, who works as a secretary in the palace, while she is waiting to meet with the councilor. Kiru thinks that Sakura is being held for randsom and that she has influencial friends. He asks for her help. Sakura tells Kiru the truth of it and asks for his help.
He agrees — as long as she introduces Kiru to the Great Warrior. Sakura thinks that Kiru may just be the type of person the Great Warrior wants her to find. She hopes that he can get her into the dungeons and out again without the councilor knowing.
Kiru gets Sakura to the dungon. Rormic is in the cell but Brad has been taken out and is with the councilor. The guard took Brad away after Rormic’s stunts earlier.
Sakura goes into the councilor’s office to find her father trapped in another room with five beasts. The councilor wants to see if the beasts will listen to Brad or just Sakura. Sakura quickly tames the beasts to get them away from her father.
The councilor thinks that everything is finally coming together. He sees Sakura taming beasts and starts talking about taking over the kingdom. The emperor hears the councilor admit this. He orders the councilor’s death.
The emperor wants to kill Sakura and Rormic too to make sure that the threat is gone. Rormic grabbs Sakura’s hand and runs. He knocks over the box with Sakura’s mother’s necklace in it. The necklace moves towards a portal hidden behind the door.
Rormic pulls Sakura and Brad through the portal and into another world.
The important thing about this new world is that there are dragons there. Sakura and Rormic run into one on their first day there! Brad is injured by the spiked tail and Rormic is captured.
Sakura tries to tame the beast but he just turns into a man! No one can stop him from taking Rormic away.
The dragon flies away with Rormic and forces him into a cave. Rormic is knocked out and locked up before the dragon will tell him why he was taken.
Rormic has a mysterious family history of his own. His parents were wizards in Kingston. They worked with the king to protect the gateways to other worlds. Their magic allowed them to see the gateways and knew where they went. The dragon is convinced that Rormic has the same power. He tries to bribe Rormic into leading him to the gateways but Rormic refuses.
Rormic does not trust the dragon. He was not asked to come here because the dragon knows his cause would not make Rormic come.
The dragon sends a witch out to where Sakura and Brad are hiding in the woods. The witch offers to heal Brad’s wounds if Sakura brings him to the witch’s home. Sakura cannot heal her father herself. She is desperate enough to accept the witch’s help.
The witch chains Brad to a bed before she heals him and takes Sakura to Rormic. The dragon threateneds to torture Sakura if Rormic does not lead him to the gateways. The dragon turns Sakura into a bird (a very painful process) to prove his point.
Rormic agrees to help but plans on leading the dragon in circles. Rormic tries to lead the dragon in the wrong direction but the magic causes him pain when he tries. Rormic must lead the dragon to the gateway.
The dragon promises to let Rormic go and turn Sakura back into a human. The dragon does not keep his word once Rormic gets him to the gateway. The dragon changes Sakura into a human but he sends lightning flying towards Rormic. Rormic lies on the ground moaning. The witch and dragon leave him for dead. Sakura is unconscious on the ground. They take her through the portal into Kingston.
This is the kingdom that Sakura’s grandparents ruled. Kings and Queens on longer rule here. It is ruled by a council instead. Still, every council needs a head. One of the princes has payed the dragon a large some of money to make sure that he becomes the council’s head.
The prince is actually setting the dragon up. The dragon has set up a slavery ring and is sending people into other demensions to be slaves. The dragon, who calls himself the Master in Kingston, got the finances for this by lying to the council. The prince plans on revealing the dragon’s tretchery. The concil will be so greatful to him that they give him the new position!
The prince cannot prove that the dragon is doing anything without Saura’s help. Sakura is afraid to help him. The witch has a crystal ball that lets Sakura see Rormic. If Sakura refuses to play her part than the witch hurts Rormic. The image in the ball cries out. Sakura remembers that he looked near death when they left him…
The truth is that Rormic was picked up by slavetraders. Brad was found by the same slavers but Rormic does not know it. Rormic manages to run away but he makes the mistake of running into a guard tower. The captain of the guards sees Rormic run (Rormic is a very fast runner) and he wants Rormic to be a part of the guards. He purchases Rormic from the slave market.
Brad was not put up for auction because he can read and write. One of the princes (the prince who asked the Master to bring Sakura) has asked all the slavers to bring slaves who could read to him. He plans on using a literate slave to work with the slaves. The prince is an abolitionist and a freedom fighter. He wants to make Kingston a better place but he is willing to do anything to accomplish his goal!
The prince finds out that Rormic is a desendant of the wizards that worked with the old king and queen. There was a prophesy that said the Master would be killed by a wizard. The Master killed as many wizards as he could but two wizards escaped him; a husband and wife. Wizardy is hereditary so their son inherited their wizardy. Rormic is the son of the last two wizards!
The prince plans on using Rormic to scare the Master into voting the way the revolution wants him to. Rormic is the only wizard left to defeat the Master! The prince buys Rormic from the guards. Brad comes to the fort to free him. The prince knows that Rormic is more likely to trust Brad.
The prince has Rormic, Sakura, the witch and the Master all come to a ball. An epic battle of magic takes place. The Master is winning until the witch, Sakura, the Prince and Rormic all work together to take the Master’s magic. Brad uses a sword to dealt the final blow!
Peace is brought to the kingdom, slavory is over and the people can live in peace.
In the end, Rormic leads Sakura and Brad to the gateway that can take them home. Rormic agrees to take a place as the wizard of Kingston and Sakura and her father are invited to come back.
This ending leaves readers with a conclusion while leaving room for a sequel.
