Joel Puga was born in the Portuguese city of Viana do Castelo in 1983. Since an early age, he has been in contact with fantasy and science fiction, mainly thanks to dubbed films and TV shows transmitted by Spanish channels. As soon as he learned how to read, he got into genre literature; starting his adventure with Julio Verne’s books. It was during this time that he produced his first stories, generally using other author’s universes as a backdrop, the reading of which was reserved to family and friends.

I was born on Remembrance day, I was early. My mother wanted me to be born at 11, but the doctors delivered me at 9:30. I’m contrary like that. My childhood was shaped by a bout of meningitis, that was diagnosed by my grandmother over the phone. She was one of her generation’s few female doctors. The effects of which, including loss of fine motor control, would shape the rest of my life. Proving you can still be a writer with bad handwriting, but not bad enough for me to follow in her footsteps and become a doctor.

I may not be a surgeon now, but I still like sharp things. Swords are my thing, and I studied Iaijutsu, and a plethora of other martial arts, with and without blades. Not in the serial killer kind of way, but more of a curious enthusiast. Also the blunted weapons, gotta have a bit of a thump. Tie that in with 15 years of medieval reenactment (and no I don’t mean ren-fair) and studying history and philosophy at uni. I’ve got a lot of knowledge built around weaponry, tactics and military history.

I spent some time in cadets, and a lot more around soldiers and ex-soldiers. I learnt how to shoot, gun safety, camping, how to march, how to navigate with a map and compass (forget that GPS stuff) and other basic military skills, like how to make a verse in a marching tune about each individual in the unit. Hopefully some of that comes across in the realism I put into the more military oriented books.

I’m always working on several fictional worlds simultaneously, including a collaboration with Michael Anderle. Some of my works have been published, maybe more by the time you’re reading this, while hundreds more pages are lying orphaned in my incomplete folders. So, I’m generally working on three books (at least) at any one time. One day they’ll all be out there for you to read. In the meantime I’m living in a regional town in Australia, with a day’s drive to the nearest capital city.

Right now I live at home with my partner of eight years, and between novels I’m a full time carer. I’m completing my bachelors degree with a major is philosophy, and right now I’m applying that learning to the deep question of whether a self-published author can survive on more than cat food. This is a terribly important question, as I have two beagles to feed. I am wary of bumps in the house due to my partner’s severe epilepsy. Miranda Nading is a southern Nevada transplant from Wyoming. She lives and works in the Lake Mead National Recreation Area with her husband, Lance, and her Pomchi’s Boomer and Missy. After a turbulent childhood, Miranda spent her young adulthood as a single mother in the military and law enforcement. She’s spent the last decade working in Administrative Management, exploring anything science related, and looking for her next big adventure.

Though she started writing short stories in the third grade, she tackled her first novel-length manuscript, Witch Hunt in 1992. As a single mother, time was a precious commodity and though she had little to spare, she continued writing and completed her second manuscript, Exodus, in 1994. Echoes of Harmony followed in 1996 and would become her breakout novel in 2014.

Her other works include Caliban and Canyon Echoes, also published in 2014. Published in 2015 were the first two books of the Extinction Series: Genesis and Flash Point. The next two books: Judas and Asylum are slated for release in 2016. As she continues working on Extinction, Miranda also has planned a short story that will be released in December of 2016 in an anthology whose proceeds will go to charity. It will later end up in a short story collection which will include her favorites. Also planned is Eldorado: A Cottonwood Cove Adventure.

The genres Miranda prefers to write are also among her favorite reads: Thrillers, Science Fiction, and Horror, all with a suspenseful edge that leaves the reader riding the edge of their seat and turning the pages. The Extinction Series is her first exploration into Post-Apocalyptic suspense with a hard dystopian edge and more than a little science fiction. Though she has read some historical romance, she prefers romance to be the seasoning in the dish, not the main course.

Her favorite writers include, but are in no way limited to: Agatha Christie, Edgar Allan Poe, Sir Author Conan Doyle, T.S. Eliot, Robert Frost, Robert Browning, Michael Crichton, Dean Koontz, and Stephen King. These are authors whose work she rereads once every year or two as, she says, it is like visiting an old friend.

About The Structure of a Great Story: How to Write a Suspenseful Tale!:

Although there’s no secret formula that will transform your prose into something your favorite authors would envy, I believe that often repeated saying: knowledge is power.

The sorts of stories I focus on in the following pages are often called genre stories. They’re stories filled with suspense, the kind that keep decent hardworking folk up till indecent hours, unable to put their book down until they find out what happened, whether the hero found the treasure and saved the day or lost everything in a fiery inferno of regret.

Given this, it will come as no surprise that I believe the key to writing good genre fiction is to create complex, compelling characters, put them in an interesting yet hostile setting, introduce believable opposition with clear stakes and wrap it all up in a well thought-out plot.

In other words, the key to writing great genre fiction is to write a great story. While there isn’t a set of rules that, if followed, will produce a bestselling story there are rules of thumb. That said, just as most humans have an internal skeleton that consists of two arms, two legs, a spinal column and so on, so most stories have a structure that can be described as consisting of three acts with around 19 parts.

Now that’s not to say that every well structured story has all these parts, any more than we would say that every human has all their bits! Just as some photographs only show us a person’s eye or their hand leaving us to infer the rest so some stories—for instance, many short stories—show us only one small bit of a larger adventure.

Also, some parts of a story are more important than others. To continue my rather gruesome analogy, while many people are able to live a normal life with only one leg, the same could not be said for anyone without a head! Or a heart. The same is true for a story. While it’s perfectly possible to have a great story even if the protagonist didn’t reject the Call to Adventure that’s not the case for one that lacks a Climax. Here’s another example: If a story lacks a Wrap Up readers may go away feeling vaguely dissatisfied but if it lacks an Inciting Incident chances are they won’t bother finishing the book!

For a student to become a medical professional one of the first steps is to learn human anatomy. It’s the same for writers. In order to craft great stories it helps to learn story anatomy. If that’s your desire then, please, read on!
