As much as I liked the two main characters, however, my favorite character is Jeannie, the old woman Adam befriends on the plane to Dublin. An early Alzheimer’s sufferer she has made her getaway from a nursing home in the States so she can return to her native Ireland to die without forcing her children to watch her pathetic decline. She and Adam have two more encounters before the novel ends and each meeting not only makes her a more interesting character, but adds another layer to Adam and his understanding of himself.

Tracked down in Oregon by his father and step-mother, he was given a choice – either come live in Alaska with them or be dropped off at the police station. Rick chose door number one, the apparent lessor of two evils. With that choice his fate was sealed, and for the next thirteen months, his life in Alaska was a cage match with each party throwing punches; the violence and tension escalating with each round. His only solace was his participation in the Navy JROTC, a place where he found peace and a sense of purpose.

Early in the evening of November 30, 1995 his father informed Rick that because it was interfering with his school, he was pulling him from the Navy JROTC. The first blow landed. After a prolonged argument with his wife, Robert Watkinson informed his sixteen year old son that he was to be gone from the house before sunrise the next morning. No money, no plane ticket back to Oregon, just a kick out the door into the dead of an Alaskan winter. It was more than he could take.

In his own words Rick writes; “This second betrayal was too much. The dam that held back the waters of six years of suppressed emotions broke and I was overwhelmed. In an act, I will always regret, I shot both my father and step-mother”. Never denying his guilt and confessing to the crime, Rick was tried as an adult and sentenced to 160 years in prison.

“Ghost” is the true story of Richard Watkinson, his journey from a tumultuous childhood, to his current stay and personal growth behind the thick steel bars in the Alaska State Penitentiary. Who is this man and what causes a person to cross the boundaries of humanity? Can these events be strictly traced to upbringing and environment, or do some people have an inherent propensity for evil? Is redemption or rehabilitation even possible? Watkinson’s compelling story and subsequent trial and extremely harsh sentencing raise serious questions about society in general, the treatment of minors, and the power of the American justice system.

I began to write at the age of five, using my family as characters in my first epic novel, “The Rabbit Family”. Although never formally published, the single, handwritten and self-illustrated copy of “The Rabbit Family” did make appearances at the local school, grocery store, bowling alley and bridge club meetings, courtesy of an enthusiastic Mother and her large purse. I am grateful to my family for allowing me to develop my imagination and creative flair without ever passing judgment. I realize at times this must have been difficult.

I was blessed to be born into the most wonderful and loving family, with parents who adored each other and three incredible older brothers who still arm wrestle at Christmas to see who’s the strongest. My older sister is my best friend and someone I’m not sure I could ever do without. My family gave me my foundation and helped me be the person I am today. We’ve had our struggles, losing Mom at such a young age, being at the top of the list, but we’ve always stuck together. I am thankful for their love and the love of their spouses and children.

Being the youngest kid in a big family is an awesome thing, even if meant I had to be the “official television station changer” before the invention of the wireless remote (long story…maybe a future blog post!). And then there were the times my oldest brother made me run laps through the house to “train” for the Olympics, while he sat on the stairs, laughed and shouted the odd word of encouragement. Do I begrudge him? Hell no! I just made his two girls sprint back and forth in my backyard when they came to visit…

Creativity is about having the courage to not only find your voice but share it with others. It can be frightening – I know. For too long I was afraid, and kept my creativity safely hidden in the closest. Afraid of being laughed at…ridiculed for being a bit zany. So I tried other means to satisfy my imagination. I coloured my hair. A lot. I re-arranged furniture and painted walls. But nothing seemed to work. I couldn’t deny it. I had to write. I was forced to write. And I was liberated.

I enjoy all sorts of writing and don’t like to pigeon-hole myself into one particular genre. It all depends on the vibe I’m feeling for that particular day. I’ve written non-fiction books, fiction books, articles and over forty scripts for short 30 second animation pieces. I enjoy what I do and have to admit it does give me a feeling of accomplishment. Life is all about what you make it. If you never take the chance, you’ll never know just what you might be able to accomplish!

He turned to writing history and non-fiction and was published a number of times, including in World War Two magazine.

In September of 2014 he wrote the first pages of what would become Standing The Final Watch and its direct sequel, Standing In The Storm (coming April 21, 2017).

A. A. Jafri was born in Karachi, Pakistan and now lives in the United States where he teaches economics at a university. The Pakistan that he grew up in had a vibrant culture. It was a country that was introduced to Jazz by the great Dizzy Gillespie in the late 1950s. As a child growing up in Karachi, he remembers dancing to Jazz Music at the Karachi International Exhibition. It was a country that was regularly visited by foreign dignitaries. All that changed on 5th July 1977, when General Zia ul-Haq overthrew a democratically elected government and introduced a draconian version of Islam. As he banned dancing, music, and cinema, he also introduced flogging for drinking alcohol and stoning for committing adultery. And worst of all were the blasphemy laws. Thousands of people were persecuted under those oppressive laws. Since then, violence, drugs, terrorism and sectarianism have taken deep roots in the body politic of Pakistan. So much so that many have called Pakistan the most dangerous place in the world.
The changing face of Pakistan forced him to choose exile. But exile cannot banish the lonely heart from its birthplace. An exile can never remain oblivious to tyranny and oppression. Jeff Himelson is the Portfolio Manager for JBH Capital. He previously worked as a research analyst at a hedge fund and is currently a third year student at Columbia Law School.

Jeff first learned about business when he was 10. His dad’s company was throwing away a vending machine and asked if Jeff wanted to fix it up and start a soda vending machine business. Jeff loved spending time with his dad and quickly jumped at the opportunity to run this vending machine business. Jeff’s dad borrowed a pickup truck and brought the vending machine home. They spent a few hours replacing light bulbs and cleaning the machine. Then they transported it to a truck repair shop that Jeff’s uncle owned. Next they went to Costco to buy soda and then Jeff’s business was up and running.

Throughout this process, and before Jeff’s dad passed away when Jeff was 14, Jeff learned about concepts such as fixed costs, variable costs, making a profit, and other important business topics. This method of teaching was very effective and Jeff quickly grasped these concepts and successfully ran this business until he started college.

Not surprisingly, Jeff chose to study business in college, specifically finance, and with his strong foundation from his dad’s teachings, he was able to excel. Jeff ran a couple of profitable businesses in college and was able to graduate with Magma Cum Laude honors in just 3 years. However, not wanting to stop learning, Jeff went on to attend law school and will graduate from Columbia Law School in May of 2017.

You can then start on the mental changes and those mental changes are addressed in the alteration of your mindset. Your mindsets are the root of your being. They are the core of your personality and the reason you act and react the way you do. Once you alter your mindset, everything that flows from there changes. You can chose how you mold your new mindset. Some people like to keep a neutral mindset, others chose to keep a positive mindset. I you want to become a philosopher and seek truth and enlightenment, then chose the neutral mindset. But, if you want to make it in the material world and you want to live a large life, then keep your mindset positive.

When you operate on a positive plane you will easily see the blessings that are already within you. These are not religious in any way and the term, “blessing” is used in a non-religious and non-spiritual way. The blessings here are seen purely from a functional perspective.

With the understanding of your strengths in the form of your blessings, you can then clearly approach all things that you act and react to. Some work out great, others turn out to be mistakes. But you should define mistakes not as wrongs, but as reasons to learn.

If you can learn how to learn from your mistakes there will be no occurrence in your life that is bad. Because everything will lead to a positive outcome in your life. ALL roads for you, then, lead to success. That is the highest form of efficiency.

Your better life is all about freedom and when you embrace a minimalist’s life, you will find that you are no longer beholden to and controlled by mere objects but instead you bring those objects to work for you. When you desire things, it controls you. When you are blinded by material accumulation, you don’t realize that your wealth is limited. If you want true greatness, give up the small stuff; embrace minimalism, and you will begin to experience the abundance you deserve.

Finally, learn how to invoke faith and practice meditation. Having faith is not about the belief in something that you cannot see. Having faith is being certain that what you are working for has every possibility of happening. There is nothing blind about it because you are in control of what you do and what you receive. When you combine this with meditation, you create a powerful force that channels your energies toward the abundance of the universe and it brings to reality what you want.

It just takes these six steps to turn your life around. Just get off mental recliner and make things happen. These six steps require your effort and when it’s complete, you and those around you won’t recognize you or the life you lead.
