Nick Boyland grew up on a British army Garrison in Western Germany. He restored and built his first motorcycle at the tender age of 16; a Triumph tiger Cub. Lapping in the valves on his dressing table, using grinding compound he made himself from toothpaste and emery cloth, and re-winding the alternator with copper wire scavenged from old transformers. The Amal carburetor; scavenged from an old BSA Bantam, had the jets braised up and drilled out on the patio with a 12 volt drill until the mixture was, ‘just right’. Nick developed a strong empathy with old British motorbikes which saw him, as a young man, riding a hard tailed, Tribsa (Triumph/BSA) hybrid Chopper, across much of mainland Europe. He enjoyed the hospitality of numerous European bike clubs, in his extensive travels, which brought the adventures and experiences he interlaces into his fiction. Somewhere along the way, Nick graduated from ‘Motorcyclist’ to ‘Biker’. Now living in rural Somerset with his wife, children and dog, he is the proprietor of ‘Rhino trikes’ Motorcycle trike conversion specialists. Nick has appeared on TV a number of times as engineering expert ‘Rhino’ in the Popular Channel Four program: ‘Scrapheap Challenge’. Nick’s company: Rhino trikes has a credit on the International Movie Database for supplying vehicles to Northern Girl productions, for use in the feature film: ‘The Zombie King’ Starring Corey Feldman and Edward Furlong. In 2013, Nick began writing, at first just reliving old glories in a blog style, but very quickly he found his characters began to talk to him, at first just upholstering their bones with skin and muscle, later beginning to write their own dialogue. Now Nick doesn’t formally plan out a plot, preferring to just create a scenario, then letting the characters write the story themselves. Still working with trikes and custom bikes, Nick now rides a customized Harley Davidson 1450 Dyna-glide sport. Nick writes in English. Some of the words and spellings he uses are different from US English, but that is just part of the charm! He doesn’t write about Lords and Ladies, he doesn’t even write about London, preferring instead never to venture inside the M25 (London ring road) but his writing is nevertheless quintessentially English, but with a real transatlantic feel.

Once Ethan discovered her treachery he gave in to Sir Kilger’s revenge and quickly found himself staring down the point of a razor-sharp sword. Jules realized what she had done and set out to find Ethan and beg his forgiveness, for everything. She raced through the woods and silently came upon the two men. She overheard Sir Kilger telling Ethan that his slimy brother, Hunt, had been working for him for years and orchestrated the ambush on his family home, which killed his father. Daniel killed Hunt in self-defense and Kilger laughed at Ethan for carrying around the guilt that had eaten most of his soul for the last five years.

Jules finally understood Ethan did not kill Daniel on purpose and a great fear washed over her heart that she may lose her love forever. Kilger raised his sword high above Ethan’s bowed head, and, with one blow, everything was over. Kilger’s limp body fell next to a drained Ethan. Ethan’s confused eyes rose to meet Jules’ relieved gaze. It was over.

I grew up on a working cattle ranch in the Arizona desert in the ’60s and ’70s. But if you’re thinking that sounds romantic – ooh, a real cowboy! – let me stop you right there. I had the travel bug pretty bad before the kids came along, going as far as I could with my backpack and whatever change I could scrounge up. While backpacking in Australia I had the great good fortune to meet a wonderful Swiss woman who didn’t call the police when I chased her back to her home country. We’ve been married over 20 years now, with two almost-grown sons (I hear the travel bug calling again) and a lot of interesting forks in the roads we’ve taken.

I’ve never been much interested in writing in just one genre. There’s a five-book epic fantasy series, an action thriller, a fantasy parody, and some other assorted odds and ends. There’s even a humorous book about my upbringing that I swear I’ll finish someday.

My memoir begins at my college graduation ceremony, when I admonished myself for failing to feel the exuberance that such a day should elicit. I observed, as if from far away, excitement all around me. I was about to graduate with honors and a degree in theater. But how will I pursue acting when I weigh a mere 69 pounds?

My story then jumps back to kindergarten, where I was punished regularly. No one seemed to notice how unusually troubled and angry I was at only five years old.

I spiraled downward into the creepy depths of anorexia nervosa, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder. At school, I was bullied relentlessly. By eight years old I was restricting food and studying late into the night in order to get perfect grades. I became obsessed with even numbers and exhibited bizarre compulsive rituals, like repeating everything I said, and exhaling whenever I walked through a doorway.

My self-destructive behaviors were a desperate attempt to gain control in a world I perceived as chaotic and terrifying. As I grew to hate myself more and more, these behaviors also served to satisfy my need for punishment. I had no words to communicate what I was feeling, since I couldn’t understand it myself.

My cries for help went unanswered by my parents and teachers, until at eleven years old I ran away and was physically forced back home by the police. I was hospitalized and told it was to protect me from injuring myself.

After that, my parents tried sending me to several different psychotherapists, each one worse than the last. Dr. Argyles always put his smelly feet up on the coffee table and took personal calls during our sessions. Dr. Discipline was convinced that all my problems were due to a lack of parental discipline.

I threw nightly temper tantrums and often tried hurting myself ―cutting my fingers, banging my head into a wall, and suffocating myself with a pillow. I wanted the physical pain to dull the agony I was feeling inside. It didn’t.

I felt as though a war had broken out in my head―an endless battle between good and evil, healthy and sick, and life and death. The healthy part of me wanted to fight the sickness that had invaded my mind, but that monster grew stronger and rational Rachel lost her footing.

My despair erupted in hatred towards the people who loved me most. My big sister, Valerie, was obese, which disgusted me. I refused to speak to her for over a year. I also turned on my Dad, especially after he hit me to try to stop me from running away.

But there was a single bright spot in my life, and it shone like a spotlight. I found joy on the stage, performing in school and community theater musicals. On stage, I could take a break from my miserable self and become someone else―someone better.

I saw a bulging belly when I looked in the mirror, and I fantasized about cutting out my stomach with one of my mom’s large kitchen knives. My starvation was a gradual process fueled by anger and fear, and driven by willpower. I was rewarded with a sense of comfort and security as my body mass was slowly replaced with emptiness. I wanted to become invisible, but at the same time I was desperate for someone to see how badly I was hurting.

The second time I ran away, it was the middle of the night and I wore only a t-shirt. I sat in the school parking lot and fantasized about being murdered and discovered the next morning in a pool of blood.
In college, I grew increasingly isolated as I wasted away. I studied obsessively and starred in many shows, but my roommate, Samantha, watched in horror as I became skeletal.

My recovery process began after junior year when my doctor sent me to the hospital despite my crying and pleading to let me go home. The reader joins me as I struggle to gain weight against my will, only to suffer relapses and be hospitalized again.

I was born healthy and grew up in a comfortable home with a loving family. So what could have caused me to develop a deadly mental illness at such an early age? The answer is as complex as the disorder itself. It took a combination of genetics, heredity, parental influence, society, environment, and circumstance to create the morbidly anorexic girl I became.

I give a detailed inside view of the fascinating and flawed recovery process, both in the hospital and out, being force-fed 4,000 calories a day, and the interesting tricks my fellow patients used to try to “beat the system.”

Throughout, I struggled with the decision of whether to end my life or fight my way through recovery and risk finding out what was on the other side. I also made unlikely friends along the way, including a six-year-old boy with a fatal illness.

It was a surprise even to myself that, after putting some pounds back on and spending all that time in recovery, I still had not recovered. Gaining weight did not erase the underlying issues that caused me to starve myself in the first place. My anorexia never stopped fighting for control over my body. It wasn’t until I had gained enough weight for my brain to function properly that the real battle began.
It took a devastating break-up with my first boyfriend, in our Harlem apartment, to realize that I needed to truly recover if I were ever to have a chance at life. Would moving back in with my parents, pursuing my acting career, and trying online dating help me win this battle once and for all?

The part of me that longed to live, to pursue my acting career, to find some happiness in life, had to finally face up to the anorexia that had long since become my identity. It was an identity that could easily kill me, but at least it was familiar and reliable. If I wasn’t anorexic, then who was I? And did I want to find out?

Born on the Wirral, I live in Spain for the present, but my dream is to retire (Hah, what is that? Retire???) and live on a narrowboat along one of the many waterways around the Welsh border. In 2009 my first book was published under the pseudonym Glenn Stuart, and I wrote and had published 10 YA novels. I write adult thrillers (some of them might be classed as cross-overs, that means they are also suitable for teenagers), historical and speculative fiction and, most recently Westerns. This will be my main direction now.

My historical novels tracing the life of Harald Hardrada, are available here in paperback and for the Kindle. A sweeping story full of treachery and murder, I’m sure you’ll find lots to enjoy in this series. VARANGIAN is the first, ORIGINS the latest, which goes back in time to reveal who Harald was, how he developed into the legendary figure he became in parts 1 and 2. I shall begin work on the 4th volume in early 2017. I also have plans for a Viking book or two based in the Wirral back in the early 9th century. I’ve been doing a lot of research around this, my fascination springing from the numerous Scandinavian sounding names of towns and places in the area where I grew up – Thingwall, Irby, Pensby, all good, Viking names!

My most successful series is that of the Western hero Detective Simms, who works for the Pinkerton Agency. A veteran of the Mexican War, Simms is a frontiersman, hard and resourceful. The first in the series (which gives the series its name) is UNFLINCHING and has proved to be my most successful book to date. I have written four in the series so far and the 5th is due out by the end of the year. It is a good series of novels which I think will appeal to anyone, not just lovers of the genre, who enjoys fast-paced mysteries. My goal is to write at least 10 of these books, whilst writing some stand alone Westerns too, with the occasional thriller thrown in.

I will do my best to complete the 3rd – and probably last – in this series, but so many projects are backing up. I simply haven’t got enough time in the day to complete all the work I need to do!

There are the sequels to Don Luis, Sallowed Blood and Tears in the Fabric of Time to complete. Fortunately, I love writing, and virtually every day I get something down on my word processor. I love to create worlds, characters, events. Often I have a plan to follow, and I know the direction, but what happens in-between is sometimes not even up to me. Things simply take over. So, to sum up, there may be a lot to do, but I love it and when you love something, it is never a chore!

2017 is going to be very busy, as I am also due to rewrite many of my old Glenn Stuart books and have them re-published under my name of Stuart G Yates.
