I’ve been storying ever since I can remember. Storying is what I called it when I was eight and my mom asked me what I was doing with these two sticks in my hands. She caught me shaking them while talking. In my mind, they weren’t sticks, they were the characters in my story. It was a habit of mine to escape into these stories I made up. I did it whenever things seemed too boring. You should hear my story involving broccoli.

Now, of course, I write these stories down. The idea of being a writer was always abstract to me. My English teacher in high school encouraged me to explore it after I turned in the “day I was born” assignment in a folder labeled “Top Secret.” The whole paper was written from the perspective of an FBI agent doing deep background research into her subject, which was me of course. In college, I decided to dabble with the idea of writing. I took several creative writing courses and one of my majors was English. I got a lot of positive feedback from that, but still, the concept of writing was something I was scared to pursue. What if I really sucked at it? I preferred to preserve my dreams intact and got a practical job as a teen librarian. I was very happy with my job, but somewhere along the line, my writing bug took over. One long weekend I sat down at the computer and wrote for two days nonstop. The first book I ever wrote was finished. And, side note, will probably never see the light of day because I really had no clue what I was doing.

After several more years, and a move to a new city, I finally sat down and wrote again. This time with much more purpose. I published the book and sent the link to my mom, telling her I finally wrote one of my stories down for everyone to see. I then published one more each year for three years. I had a plan, you see. I needed a small library of books before I wanted to start investing in advertising. I was well on my way. But life has a funny sense of humor when it comes to those best laid plans.

Two years ago I was called back into the hospital for a CT scan. They had seen something in my chest during an x-ray of my lungs. Obviously, this is not a call you want to get. I looked at all the images they showed me. For the first time in my life, I couldn’t story something to make it more exciting. Two kinds of cancer. They’d have to cut my chest open to remove the rather large tumor. I was only thirty-seven. The whole thing was cliché in how unreal it was. It also stopped me cold in my writing. I needed to put all my energy into solving that problem. So I did. A year ago I got my port taken out. And in the last few months, I’ve written two more books, and am finishing an edit of a third.

So, this was a long walk but hopefully worth it, my hobbies are kicking cancer’s ass, writing stories, and of course, nachos. Nachos can be a hobby. Don’t you let anyone tell you any different.

Prolific novelist and thinker, Shlomo Kalo, one of the very few Israeli writers nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature, has published 80 titles in a variety of genres and themes.
Kalo was born in 1928 in Sofia, Bulgaria. He joined the anti-Fascist underground before reaching his teens and wound up in a concentration camp at the age of 15. After studying medicine and working as a journalist in Prague, and training as a pilot for Mahal, he immigrated to Israel in 1949. He was awarded an MSc in microbiology from Tel Aviv University in 1958. For 26 years and until his retirement, he worked as regional director of medical laboratories.

Federal City’s Secret – Reader’s Favorite – In the pages of this book the reader will find a really fun and interesting tale about a magazine reporter who is over her head in a political investigation. Kelly Kaufman is a reporter, assigned to dig into a political figure who wants to run for president. When she doesn’t contact her mother for two weeks, Shawna calls the paranormal investigators. She has some shadows and such in her apartment and uses this to bring them to D.C. Now Marie Bartek is the head of the paranormal group that consists of a few very interesting characters, including her heartthrob, Cory. They take the job. After the group takes care of the ghost at Shawna’s, she accepts the request to stay and work on the disappearance of Kelly. All goes well until she realizes that she brought more than just her group to D.C.–it seems that Demon B also accompanied her. Choosing to stay and find Kelly may cost them several lives: that of her mentor, Kelly’s and hers.

It is a very good paranormal story, in the same realm as “Ghost Busters”. I really enjoyed the telling and the tale. I consider it a must have in the library of lovers of suspense, romance, and paranormal investigation. “Federal City’s Secret” is well-done entertainment for a hot day at the beach or a lazy afternoon at the swimming pool. Robin presents a great story and characters. This is great reading for young adults to adults alike. Secret of Coffin Island is Book 4 in Robin Murphy’s paranormal mystery series, Marie Bartek and the SIPS Team. Dr. Marie Bartek and her fiance, Police Chief Cory Miller, have finally tied the knot. Their wedding festivities are interrupted, however, by the discovery of a headless corpse. While criminal investigations are, strictly speaking, Cory’s milieu, Marie and her team of psychic researchers have been instrumental in solving mysteries in the past, and she has already received visions that seem to pertain to the mystery at hand. Her mentor and friend, Myra, who had passed after suffering a heart attack, has continued her mentorship albeit from the other side, and Marie takes comfort from both her presence and her guidance. Marie’s also been asked to help with the case of Isabella, a young woman whose mother is concerned that she’s been possessed, but Marie quickly determines that Isabella is also a gifted psychic.

Robin Murphy’s paranormal mystery, Secret of Coffin Island: Marie Bartek and the SIPS Team, Book 4, is an exciting and well-plotted novel. While it’s the fourth book in the series, Murphy includes just enough background information to allow this book to be read on its own without giving away too much about the previous mysteries. I found myself enchanted by Sullivan Island and the ambiance of a beach community, and enjoyed the plot’s historical connection to Edgar Allan Poe’s The Gold Bug. The author also gives a valid working picture of a psychic investigation team at work as well as having the husband/wife team working together on the case. Secret of Coffin Island is an interesting and quite effective blend of the paranormal and the police procedural genres that works marvelously. Her main character’s idea for a retreat for psychic youth is inspired and gives the series a sense of continuance, and Isabella’s pivotal role in this story makes it fresh and compelling. Secret of Coffin Island: Marie Bartek and the SIPS Team, Book 4 is highly recommended.

Since being Vlad the Impaler he has undergone many incarnations – Vincent Price, Countess Elizabeth Báthory de Ecsed, Yekaterina Alexeyevna, Lorena Bobbitt, a prostitute in Victorian Whitechapel, a passenger on the Titanic and a buccaneer executed for treason on the high seas to name but a few. Currently he is manifested as a former businessperson and resides in the UK. When living as Donatien Alphonse François, Marquis de Sade he knocked off a few saucy tales but never got to sell the movie rights. Since then his wordsmithing has become a tad rusty but he managed to spit out the world’s first dystopian farce in “The Science of the Lambs” an irreverent look at our future history over the coming decade. The critical acclaim was deafening – he still hasn’t heard anything. Undaunted by this adulation he recently completed the first book of a series called “Doing the Business”. This initial volume is titled “The Sicilian Job” and involves a clash of Business models between a Texan telecommunications company and La Cosa Nostra. Immodestly he claims it is the funniest book about business since Tom Peter’s seminal rib tickler “In Search of Excellence”. The sequel “Vendetta in Valletta – (Doing the Business 2)” is described as 2016’s funniest book – by the author.
In this lifetime, he has lived in Germany, Minnesota, Texas and California in addition to the UK. In previous existences he has dwelt in places ranging from the Alaskan wilderness in the North to Tierra del Fuego in the South. He is an inveterate traveller having visited more than sixty countries and has a particular affinity for volcanic tropical islands, dramatic seascapes, deserts, mountains and pubs. He is less keen on swamps, urban blight, taiga, tundra and 80’s revival disco bars.
He has eclectic musical tastes which tend to reflect a primary love of reggae, metal and punk.
