At the age of five, Sarah Lentz was diagnosed with hypothyroidism — and with a bone age of nine months — making it more than likely that she was born with at least subclinical hypothyroidism, though the only evidence of it at the time was jaundice.

While Synthroid enabled her to catch up physically with her peers, she struggled to catch up in other ways, and even now, in her early forties, she still feels the need to catch up — and to heal.

At five years of age, she was also evaluated by someone with the Department of Education and declared “borderline retarded.” She did struggle academically for years (until high school, anyway, when math finally became fun), but she learned coping strategies along the way that made it easier to read, to study, and to remember what she learned.

After finishing her first NaNoWriMo in 2015 (and the first draft of her first novel) — and reading The Miracle Morning for Writers — she decided it was time to do what she had to do to get her first nonfiction book written and self-published by the end of 2016. So, she joined Self-Publishing School and wrote The Hypothyroid Writer. Her goal for 2017 is to publish a new book every 2 or 3 months.

From Hawking’s journal of that day: “The village is small and ancient, yet very beautiful. Seemingly overhead, rising nearly six miles into the sky, towers the great Himalayan massif of Dhaulagiri. Vast snowfields roll upward from evergreen forest to immense blue-white glaciers and ragged cliffs of ancient ice. Far above, magic colors appear, shimmer and disappear, silent reflections in clouds that sail across iced granite on high, swift journeys. Nestled in a valley below the snowfields, in dense emerald-green forest by a pure azure lake, the village spreads its river-stone structures. To the north, eagles glide in the sunny mist; the clouds drift and a high forest comes into view, threaded by waterfalls. To the east, across the crystal lake, more shining waterfalls flow down out of the clouds. As I gaze, Dhaulagiri’s peaks appear and vanish in the lavender and gray of high clouds. Over everything there lies an immortal light, a luminous brightness like transparent silver.”
Hawking’s discovery marked the beginning of a series of extraordinary encounters and experiences. Soon after arriving he realized, a bit like Columbus or Marco Polo, that he had discovered a world far stranger and vastly more profound than he could ever have imagined. In that isolated community he had the privilege of meeting a number of remarkable men and women—introduced to him as ‘masters’ and ‘adepts’—possessed of wisdom, knowledge and power virtually unknown in the Western world.

I spent much of my youth growing up in north-central Pennsylvania keeping company with the likes of the Hardy Boys and the Three Investigators. So graduating from college in 1983 and enlisting in the Pennsylvania State Police in 1984 didn’t come as a shock to my parents. For nearly twenty-seven years I lived a dream and life only visible to the uninitiated through newspapers, books, or television. Available 24/7, each day offered uncertainty, the chance for adventure, and a special bond with like-minded men and women. More important, every day provided an opportunity to help those in need.

Working for one of the largest full-service law enforcement agencies in the country provided opportunities not available to most police officers. I’ve proudly worn the uniform of the patrol officer, traded my vest for a beard to work undercover, and shopped for suits to conduct criminal investigations. In one of the more memorable moments as a young patrol corporal in 1989, I participated in the police response to the Camp Hill Prison riots, which destroyed nearly half of the state correctional institution and resulted in hundreds of injuries. The sights, sounds, and smells of the facility burning at night, helicopters circling low illuminating unrestrained inmates, and platoons of troopers retaking the facility remain etched in my mind.

I was fortunate to rise through the ranks and reach troop and area command level, where I oversaw the activity of more than 1100 state police personnel through some 7,529 square miles of the Commonwealth. At various points in my career, I detoured through the State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation, eventually receiving assignment as Director. While in the bureau on September 11th, 2001, I, like many Americans, sadly watched as the events of that tragic day unfolded in New York City, Washington D.C., and Shanksville, PA. Ensconced in the state police command post at department headquarters, I had no idea of the changes to come.

Subsequent reviews identified intelligence failures as a major contributing factor to the attacks. As commander of the Intelligence Division and later Director of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, my responsibility, along with many others, was to review the state police policies and practices regarding intelligence gathering, storage, analysis, and sharing. As a result, we created the state’s first criminal intelligence center and department watch center providing a more rapid and seamless integration of information.

A few years later on October 2, 2006, I faced the most noteworthy event of my career. On that morning, a disgruntled truck driver took ten young Amish girls hostage in a one-room school house in Lancaster County, PA. Shortly after barricading himself inside, he systematically shot each of the girls, resulting in five deaths and five critically injured children. My duties as Area Commander included helping to coordinate the response and investigation of this horrendous event. Throughout the following whirlwind five days, we investigated, interacted with a battalion of media personalities, and grieved with the victims’ families. I traveled the country for the next two years sharing lessons-learned as well as provoking debate on the topic of school violence and response to critical incidents.

I received appointment by the governor to the rank of Deputy Commissioner in 2008. I retired three years later. Looking back, I realize my career in law enforcement had been more than a simple livelihood. It provided me with experiences too numerous to detail. I have been honored to share important moments in people’s lives and bewildered by the human capacity for both love and hate.

I have divided my time over the past five years between family, consulting on law enforcement matters, and trekking through the minefield of the writing/publishing business. It is my goal to provide the reader with works of crime fiction that exhibit an authenticity born from experience.

I currently reside in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania with my lovely wife Beth. Married for 29 years, we have two sons Josh and Justin, who make us proud each and every day.

The author, writing under the pseudonym Terry Tumbler, was born in the 1940s in the small province of Wales, in not-as-‘Great’-as-it-once-was Britain. The adjoining photo of the real author has been air-brushed, so that the possibility of anyone stumbling upon his true identity will not disturb him, also believing that no one who reads his first book can possibly recognise him from the long gone days of his childhood. The first book, The Rough and Tumbles of Early Life, as you may be aware, is an accurate recollection of key events that occurred in his early life. Others of a similar, warped humour and semi-fictional nature have been produced and are being published.

The author left full-time education with a higher level certificate in Business Studies, had a Commercial Apprenticeship in the Titanium Industry, and subsequently gained professional qualifications in Personnel Management and as a Company Secretary. He worked in all aspects of computing for over thirty years, during which time many reports of dubious value and two technical manuals were well-written and printed.

Now retired, and a few months after moving abroad, the author was bemused to find his dear wife sitting alone on her tilting armchair weeping; the reason she gave was shock and horror at the prospect of spending her remaining years with him. Since then, he has done his best to behave himself, but she has still taken out a funeral plan on him. They have three grandchildren, none of whom much like to be with him for more than two weeks.

Those who may wish to inflict retribution for his innocently evil behaviour as a child, may well see through the flimsy disguise, but should know that the author now lives on alien shores and cares not one jot for their intentions.
