Once, when I was 11, I walked past the library. It was a special library for adults who worked at the metallurgical plant. My father worked at this plant as well. Through the narrow window I saw shelves full of books. Usually there were no people inside. Workers rarely read. I was a smart kid, but did not read the books too.
Nevertheless the books in the Soviet Union were a rarity. You could not freely come to the store and buy them there. It is hard to believe today, but it’s true. Books have been a deficit. You could easily buy the works of Marx and Lenin, but could not reach, for example, Jack London or J. D. Salinger.
I went inside. I do not remember exactly what we talked about with the librarian. It was a middle-aged woman. As a result, she enrolled me in the library under the name of my father, went down somewhere in the basement, and brought a thick volume. It was a novel by Jules Verne ”The Mysterious Island”. I read this book avidly. A whole new world opened before me. And so ever since I came to this library and I was given more and more new books.
I grew up, graduated with honors from the University. I am currently working as an editor at the largest Russian TV channel and writing books.
If this had not happened then, perhaps I would have to be working at the plant, which today due to the economic crisis no longer exists. So the only one book changed my life. So when someone says that reading can dramatically change a person, I believe in it, because I know it from my experience.

We lived several miles outside of the small town of Hawkinsville, Georgia, where I went to school from Kindergarten until graduation. Growing up in the middle of nowhere meant learning to use my imagination. A lot. (Let’s just say that when friends would come over, my idea of a good time was pulling out the Ouija Board.)

Reading was another one of my favorite ways to escape into my own imagination. I loved reading books by authors like Christopher Pike, Lois Duncan, and Stephen King. Anything that made me just a little too scared to turn off the lights and go to sleep. Later, my love for horror and fantasy extended into movies and video games, too.

Sarra and GeorgeEventually, video games led me to the greatest love of my life – my husband George. We met playing Everquest II, an MMO similar to World of Warcraft. At the time, I was teaching music in an elementary school. I didn’t have much time or opportunity for writing, but I had big dreams of someday being able to write a novel. One of the great things about finding the love of your life is that you suddenly have all this support for what you want to do and be in life. George encouraged me to be a writer. He continues to encourage me every day, and he’s always the first one to read everything I write.

She’ll stop at nothing to find him, but will she be too late? I wrote 50,000 words of that first book, but never saw it through the editing process. I’m thinking of someday picking it up again and rewriting it, but I have a lot of other projects to work on first.

My second YA novel, PANDEMIC, was one I started for NaNo in 2009. I eventually finished that novel in 2010, but I knew it needed some work so I set it aside and wrote another novel. BEAUTIFUL DEMONS was my third novel. It’s about a girl named Harper who is kicked out of yet another foster home and moved to the small town of Peachville, Georgia. There, she encounters a group of mysteriously beautiful cheerleaders. When Harper is framed for the murder of one of the PHS Demons cheerleaders, she is determined to find out what big secrets are being hidden in this small town.

I knew I wanted to be a published author, but instead of following the traditional route of querying agents and submitting to publishers, I decided to self-publish. At first, I was so nervous and scared. Was I making the right decision? How would anyone ever find my books? Would anyone like my books? In October of 2010, I bit the bullet and self-published BEAUTIFUL DEMONS in ebook format. I wrote INNER DEMONS, the 2nd book in my Peachville High Demons series, for NaNo 2010, publishing it soon after in December. As sales began to pick up, I felt so incredibly proud of myself and so very grateful to everyone who was reading and supporting me as an author. The series continued to grow, and I have never once regretted my decision to become an Indie author! All any one of us needs to do is turn or go onto social media to witness the civil unrest and uncomfortable feelings people are presently experiencing. This small book is my response to this unrest.
My life has always been about spiritual exploration: about exploring what truly brings us healing and a sense of well-being. When I first started on a healing path, if someone suggested I meditate for 15 minutes a day, that felt highly inconvenient to me, and I resisted my work for a number of years. I was too busy to meditate or do the work suggested! But when my life became too uncomfortable, I was more willing to try out the practices suggested to me. What resulted was the following: I found a sense of inner peace. I started having insights and greater clarity. Information started coming to me I wouldn’t have otherwise known. I became acutely aware of when my ego or mind were vying for control, clearly understood they are not me and that they really stand in the way of progress.
When I utilized the practices in this book, I began to notice shifts: I healed old wounds, felt better, my relationships improved, I became much more efficient, and more understanding. Genuine transformation took place to such a large degree that now, if I ever feel uncomfortable, I turn to these practices. My spiritual work is the most valuable and rewarding part of my daily.
It is my belief that at this time the Universe is asking us to live our lives with more awareness and consciousness. It is time for us to heal old wounds and our shadow, and to address and eliminate that which divides us. All any one of us needs to do is turn or go onto social media to witness the civil unrest and uncomfortable feelings people are presently experiencing. This small book is my response to this unrest.
My life has always been about spiritual exploration: about exploring what truly brings us healing and a sense of well-being.
