Joseph Stadtmiller is an engineer, educator and writer who has spent much of his career developing the most relevant and simple designs of electronic products, ranging from industrial, residential heating and air conditioning controls to medical electronics. Frequently Asked Questions

What inspires you to write?

From my earliest childhood memories, I think I’ve always gravitated toward creative outlets, whether through art, music, photography, etc. Writing is just another way to express myself creatively, even if I am only jotting down thoughts or ideas for myself.

What’s your writing process?

Oh, my writing process…well, that’s definitely a work in progress. Like my writing, it has evolved with each story. I tend to think of myself as a pantser AND a plotter. My initial ideas—that’s all pantsing. I scribble on anything I can find wherever I am, hoping I can make sense of it later. Once I get those initial ideas down, I have become better about developing an outline and determining where things fit into the overall story structure.

For tools, I use whiteboards, chalkboards, huge rolls of butcher paper, flip charts, index cards…you name it, I use it. As far as software, I use OneNote for collecting research and Scrivener for outlining and drafting.

My characters tend to evolve throughout the drafting process and then I go back and add nuances—making them stronger, more sinister or more vulnerable, etc. In the end, my key—and something that I’m constantly working to improve—is to ensure that their mannerisms, tone and voice remains consistent and they stay true to their individual character.

Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?

What? You mean my characters aren’t real?

Yeah, I talk to them on a daily basis—after all, every writer needs someone to share her secrets with, right?

What advice would you give someone considering a writing career?

Write because you can and never let doubt—whether from within or from others—convince you to do otherwise. Just get those words on the page—they matter.

How do you deal with writer’s block?

Ahh…for me, this is more about “monkey mind” than a block and suddenly, I’m chasing all the shiny objects…lol.

I find it’s best to push away from the laptop, or put down the pen and find something else to do. Sometimes, I take out my camera and shoot a couple of pics or pull out a coloring book, colored pencils and scribble both inside (and outside) the lines. More often than not, however, I tend to head outside for a long walk with my dogs, where we typically end up at the park and act silly for a bit.

Typically, one of the above works like a charm…but if it doesn’t, it’s best to call it a day and start fresh the next.

Roo I MacLeod was born in Croydon, Australia on an excessively hot, humid day and fought three doctors, two midwives and the utilities type person against his entry into the world. No More Heroes was conceived in a quaint English church when he took shelter from the rain. He stumbled into a funeral and found he’d doubled the mourners present. The vicar, a friend to this day, invited him to pray and sing a few tunes, and he, Roo and the young lady in black chucked dirt on the deceased come the end of the ceremony.

He now lives in West Sussex UK and has spent the last couple of years volunteering at homeless centers. He is barred from two of the five pubs in town for the same attitude that wreaked havoc in his school days and vows to antagonize the remaining four pub Landlords by the end of the year.

Robert’s determination to become what he feels is a “good teacher” became a main theme throughout the book. There was a danger then that the book would become a continuous whinge from yet another cynical, grumbling teacher. Enter Kyle Crabbe, the bully, and some of the tales begin to have a sinister theme to them! With that stage set it meant that G J could lead the reader up a path that would allow a twist to it! Author Interview with D. F. Bailey

Q. The first page of Bone Maker states that the novel is “inspired by true events.”* Tell us more.
DFB. Two events inspired these books. The first involves a massive bitcoin theft. In the spring of 2014 the bitcoin equivalent of over $450,000,000 simply disappeared from a bitcoin exchange called Mt. Gox. Solving this crime drives the plots of all three novels. At heart, the books are an organized crime series in the form of a technothriller trilogy.

Q. What was the second true event?
DFB. A few years ago I came across a news article about a convicted murderer — 53-year-old Rory Nelson Wagner — whose corpse was discovered outside his car in a mountain wilderness. Apparently he died of a heart attack and a bear had dragged him from his vehicle and partially devoured him. Horrible as it seems, I was drawn by the notion of some sort of natural justice at play. Early on in Bone Maker, the sheriff handling a similar case refers to the attack as “Murder by Nature.” I considered using that for the book title at one point.

Q. Sounds like one of Agatha Christie’s PI mysteries.
DFB. Granted, there’s an element of PI mysteries to the trilogy. However, I’m not the sort of writer who likes to create a maze or puzzle with red herrings and hidden clues to fool or mislead the reader. Bone Maker is a crime thriller with a strong noir flavor. Readers learn about the crimes one step at a time, just as our hero Will Finch uncovers the facts of each case.

Q. So who is Will Finch?
DFB. Finch is a 35 year-old crime reporter working for the San Francisco eXpress. Before becoming a journalist, he served in Iraq, at Abu Graib, in military intelligence. Like all noir heroes, there is an irredeemable quality to him, but he’s not completely lost. He senses that he can find his way back to a normal life, yet he’s not sure how to do it.

Q. Tell us about the title, Bone Maker.
DFB. Each of the three titles in the trilogy uses the nickname of a bad guy — the antagonist. I don’t want to give too much away, but it’s safe to say that the Bone Maker is not going to be your best friend. Quite the contrary. He may become your worst nightmare.

His first novel, Fire Eyes was optioned for film. His second novel, Healing the Dead, was translated into German as Todliche Ahnungen. The Good Lie, another psychological thriller, was recorded as a talking book. A fourth novel, Exit from America, made its debut as an e-book in 2013.
