My mother Jeanette passed away in February of 2016. Among her effects we found 60 love letters from her then fiancé Maurice. They first met quite by accident. Dad was on leave and visiting his parents on their farm just south of Ft. Collins, CO. He decided to visit his girlfriend Lynne in town. He went to her door only to find that she was just leaving on vacation. So as Maurice and Lynne’s roommate Jeanette were waving goodbye to Lynne, he said to Jeanette something like “So then why don’t you and I go out this evening?” The rest is history. The last of these pre-marital letters was written just 12 days before Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese.

The letters clearly demonstrate that my father was madly in love with my mom. This was likely not an uncommon emotion from a sailor or soldier separated from the love of their life. Aside from that the letters give a very personal account of a 25 year old Navy sailor’s life and the times in which they lived.

The letters are published as actually written and as you will see even as a “southpaw” my father had quite legible handwriting. Each letter is included as if it is a chapter in the book. The Pan AM Clipper Air Mail letters are written on onion skin paper so the backside writing shows through somewhat. Enjoy this window into past of a very unique time in our history.

As the book synopsis describes, the letters making up the book were written by my father to his then fiance (my mother). I compiled them into a book and added several descriptive sections. The book is unique in that the letters are actual copies printed in full size and color. The letter writing is quite legible as my father had very good handwriting for being a “southpaw”. Nivea wiped her face. She had started sweating, or maybe she was crying. She had been trained to handle anything that could happen out in space, but it didn’t really prepare her for the real unadulterated fear that came with being totally alone in the cosmos and hearing another voice.

She saw it again. Out of the corner of her eye. That ship. She blinked and it was gone. And then it was back again. It was right in her vision now. She couldn’t deny what she saw. Either it was real, or she had passed from tired and desperate hallucinations to actual insanity.

It wasn’t an earth ship. Not like one she’d ever seen before. It had the same basic shape as her shuttlecraft, but smaller. It drifted ever closer to her, just as she drifted ever closer to it.

The ship was so close to her now, she thought it might hit her, but then, suddenly a hatch in the ship opened, and out came a person. She couldn’t see their features because they were in a spacesuit of some kind. A thick, dull, purple suit that was protecting them from the lack of atmosphere.

Suddenly there was a banging on the side of the shuttlecraft. There was a long pause and then the banging happened again. Nivea didn’t know what to do. If this person needed help, she couldn’t leave them out there, but if they were a threat, and she let them inside, then her doom would be nothing but her own fault.

“What are you so afraid of, Nivea?” she asked herself aloud. “That it’s a soul-sucking alien? Even if aliens exist, I’m not even out of the galaxy.”

I feel I should preface this with an apology because while I love creating pretend characters and my trademark is likely to be a heart wrenching introductory first-person prologue from my lead, I find describing myself quite tedious. After several of these and because there was very little red ink elsewhere, I questioned the minus and the professor’s only response, after I assured him I wrote it, was to change it to an A. Mike C. Erickson grew up in the idyllic college town of Logan, Utah, but because of a twist of fate he graduated from high school in Honolulu.
