Words are our only tools to express the physicality of the chaos in our minds.
It is tedious and painstaking process to create something, anything. Emotions are not words, hence, to put them as such, requires quite a bit of searching, meandering and stumbling. I believe my affair with these alphabets will never be satiated. Yet, I have tried to sing some broken tunes, sketched some bleakness and shared fragments of my inner hope.
I have often had a love hate relationship with poetry. Its enigmatic power has often left me confused but also enlightened me. Although rhymes are fun and easy to tap your foot to, it is the rhythm or sometimes, the lack of it that can truly sear through the heart. For me, simplicity is key. It is graceful. It is alluring.
Each poem is handwritten, followed by typewrite for easy bookmarking and commenting and is accompanied by an illustration, meticulously and thoughtfully crafted. I refuse to acknowledge that illustrations are for children’s books only. There is no age limit to vision. Seeing is as much a part of feeling as reading and imagining is. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have in making them.
The poems I write do not follow any rule in particular. Although well-versed in writing verses, I opt to experiment with a variety of things, from alliteration to repetitions, and rhyme to meters, and mirroring to collating. Some poems have written themselves. Some, I have agonized over for days and nights. Writing and rewriting, getting it just right and then starting all over again. It is an organized pandemonium of the human self.

The characters act out their love, frustrations and dreams for the future. As the story progresses, the male protagonist navigates the various ups and downs of love, sex, career, family and self. He explores the sustenance, growth and hardship as he moves toward a sustainable truth.

Born on the Wirral, I live in Spain for the present, but my dream is to retire (Hah, what is that? Retire???) and live on a narrowboat along one of the many waterways around the Welsh border. In 2009 my first book was published under the pseudonym Glenn Stuart, and I wrote and had published 10 YA novels. I have now moved away from these books and am now re-writing many of them, publishing them under my name Stuart G Yates. I write adult thrillers (some of them might be classed as cross-overs, that means they are also suitable for teenagers), historical and speculative fiction and, most recently Westerns. This will be my main direction now.
My historical novels tracing the life of Harald Hardrada, are available here in paperback and for the Kindle. A sweeping story full of treachery and murder, I’m sure you’ll find lots to enjoy in this series. VARANGIAN is the first, ORIGINS the latest, which goes back in time to reveal who Harald was, how he developed into the legendary figure he became in parts 1 and 2. I shall begin work on the 4th volume in early 2017. I also have plans for a Viking book or two based in the Wirral back in the early 9th century. I’ve been doing a lot of research around this, my fascination springing from the numerous Scandinavian sounding names of towns and places in the area where I grew up – Thingwall, Irby, Pensby, all good, Viking names!
My most successful series is that of the Western hero Detective Simms, who works for the Pinkerton Agency. A veteran of the Mexican War, Simms is a frontiersman, hard and resourceful. The first in the series (which gives the series its name) is UNFLINCHING and has proved to be my most successful book to date. I have written four in the series so far and the 5th is due out by the end of the year. It is a good series of novels which I think will appeal to anyone, not just lovers of the genre, who enjoys fast-paced mysteries. My goal is to write at least 10 of these books, whilst writing some stand alone Westerns too, with the occasional thriller thrown in.

I will do my best to complete the 3rd – and probably last – in this series, but so many projects are backing up. I simply haven’t got enough time in the day to complete all the work I need to do!
There are the sequels to Don Luis, Sallowed Blood and Tears in the Fabric of Time to complete. Fortunately, I love writing, and virtually every day I get something down on my word processor. I love to create worlds, characters, events. Often I have a plan to follow, and I know the direction, but what happens in-between is sometimes not even up to me. Things simply take over. So, to sum up, there may be a lot to do, but I love it and when you love something, it is never a chore!
2017 is going to be very busy, as I am also due to rewrite many of my old Glenn Stuart books and have them re-published under my name of Stuart G Yates.

Q: How did the ‘AGAINST THE CLOCK’ Action Thriller series come about?
A: I’m a big fan of espionage books, spy thrillers, fast paced thrillers and well written action packed stories. So when the time came, there was no question; I wanted to write the kind of book that I love to read. I really wanted to make it one of those fast paced books that pushes action thrillers to a new level of Adrenalin.
The idea that would become Momentum, and the whole series, came from a graphic novel I was developing at the time. It was in that vein; wild, crazy, fun, scary and thumping with action. The story of a de-sanctioned assassin working against powerful enemies in the pursuit of justice became a solid vehicle for me to explore just how far a person would be willing to go, and how much of themselves they were willing to sacrifice to bring closure to their pain. That quickly developed into the action packed adventure series ‘AGAINST THE CLOCK’.
What I loved about writing this series was the integration of an explosive action packed story with strong elements of mystery, suspense and romance. It was such a thrill to write, and I’m hoping my readers and fans feel the same about reading it.
Q: Each book in the series reads like a movie. Was that the intention when you wrote them?
A: Absolutely. I live and breathe the writing process. I visualize every scene, every character nuance, every sight, smell, movement, emotion.. you get the idea. There has been chatter about it being made into a movie. At this stage, there’s nothing official to report. But stay tuned…
Q: The action scenes are so fast, and the fights so well described. Can you tell us more about your process?
A: I’m glad fans and reviewers are saying that! Contrary to what we see in movies, real life hand to hand combat and even gun fights, happen very quickly. My martial arts background, and firearms training definitely helps, and I have a great technical advisor and contacts with specialist skill-sets. I rehearse most of the fight scenes myself, and have someone time them with a stopwatch. They are real in the sense that the techniques are real, the speed is real, the effect is real.
When I read spy stories or any action thriller, I’m looking for action that is fast, intelligent, and stretches the boundaries of the genre. So naturally, that’s what I love to write as well.
Q: Momentum is part one of the action thriller series, how many parts will there be?
A: Good question. The “AGAINST THE CLOCK” action thriller series will officially have three parts. Part one and two are available now, with the third coming soon. I’m about to release a Prequel to Momentum, titled “Dark Days”. Watch this space.

So I gave it whirl, and enjoyed the characters and the plotting so much that I’ve written the second in the series already, and am finishing the third.Q: Tell us about Black. What makes him tick?RB: He’s kind of a loser. He’s got anger management issues he’s in therapy for, but it’s questionable how well that’s going. His therapist is a hack, and somewhat mean spirited, so that’s not helping. He got screwed over by his young wife back in the day when they were both in a band that went huge – only Black got into a bar fight the week before the beginning of the big tour and broke his hand, so they replaced him. And then his wife had an affair with the attorney who wound up handling the divorce, as well as doing him out of most of his royalties. So he’s a bitter guy. A string of loser entrepreneurial disasters left him struggling, and a PI as a last resort career. Watching a character like that go through the day, where the world is against him, is just…funny. In kind of an evil way. Those with a similar sense of humor to mine will find it a hoot. Others will probably think I’ve lost my mind. They’re probably both right, but that’s a different story…Q: Give us some background about the supporting cast.RB: Let’s see. We have Roxie, who is the assistant from hell. She’s extremely dry and deadpan, and she gives Black unending crap whenever she can. She’s hot, a singer in an art rock band, about 17 years younger than him w/full-sleeve tats, and delights in tormenting him about everything from his vices to his wardrobe. There’s Mugsy, who’s an obese stray cat that adopted Black, and who barely tolerates him – but loves Roxie. Black’s parents, who are filthy rich throwbacks to the sixties whose harebrained business enterprises wound up making them ten fortunes while Black scratches out a living, recur in each book. They’re all about peace and love and positive energy and the Summer of Love, and drive him batty – and further enrage him with their success, which he views as a personal sleight from a universe that hates him. His LAPD detective buddy, Stan, is even more cynical than he is, and their interactions are some of my favorite bits in the books. And of course, there’s a cast of characters that could only happen in L.A., which seasons the whole story in a way that’s distinct to the place.Q: What’s next? More BLACK books?RB: You betcha. I foresee a bunch of them. I’ve never had this much fun with characters in my life, so expect to see more where that came from…
