Frequently Asked Questions
What inspires you to write?
From my earliest childhood memories, I think I’ve always gravitated toward creative outlets, whether through art, music, photography, etc. Writing is just another way to express myself creatively, even if I am only jotting down thoughts or ideas for myself.
What’s your writing process?
Oh, my writing process…well, that’s definitely a work in progress. Like my writing, it has evolved with each story. I tend to think of myself as a pantser AND a plotter. My initial ideas—that’s all pantsing. I scribble on anything I can find wherever I am, hoping I can make sense of it later. Once I get those initial ideas down, I have become better about developing an outline and determining where things fit into the overall story structure.
For tools, I use whiteboards, chalkboards, huge rolls of butcher paper, flip charts, index cards…you name it, I use it. As far as software, I use OneNote for collecting research and Scrivener for outlining and drafting.
My characters tend to evolve throughout the drafting process and then I go back and add nuances—making them stronger, more sinister or more vulnerable, etc. In the end, my key—and something that I’m constantly working to improve—is to ensure that their mannerisms, tone and voice remains consistent and they stay true to their individual character.
Do you listen (or talk to) to your characters?
What? You mean my characters aren’t real?
Yeah, I talk to them on a daily basis—after all, every writer needs someone to share her secrets with, right? 
What advice would you give someone considering a writing career?
Write because you can and never let doubt—whether from within or from others—convince you to do otherwise. Just get those words on the page—they matter.
How do you deal with writer’s block?
Ahh…for me, this is more about “monkey mind” than a block and suddenly, I’m chasing all the shiny objects…lol. 
I find it’s best to push away from the laptop, or put down the pen and find something else to do. Sometimes, I take out my camera and shoot a couple of pics or pull out a coloring book, colored pencils and scribble both inside (and outside) the lines. More often than not, however, I tend to head outside for a long walk with my dogs, where we typically end up at the park and act silly for a bit.
Typically, one of the above works like a charm…but if it doesn’t, it’s best to call it a day and start fresh the next.

Q – So, what makes the Reverend Annabelle Dixon series special?
A – Annabelle. When I set out to write these books, I wanted to create a series that featured a heart-warming, smart, sometimes ditzy, ultimately good protagonist that we all undisputedly adore. It is Annabelle – her humanity, her empathy, her big heart – who makes the series so special. With her sometimes partner, sometimes antagonist, Inspector Mike Nicholls, they create some fun and drama as the small town mysteries unfold with humor and intrigue.
If you enjoy the TV series’, The Vicar of Dibley, Miranda, or Midsomer Murders, I think you will enjoy the Reverend Annabelle cozy mysteries.
Q – In what order should I read the books?
A – The Reverend Annabelle Dixon cozy mysteries can be read, and enjoyed, in any order. The prequel, Death at the Café is set in London and takes place a few years before the rest in the series. All the books are complete mysteries.
If you do want to read them in order, I’d suggest the following sequence:

A – Because the Reverend Annabelle series is a gentle, but colorful romp through the beautiful English countryside in a place that is picturesque and peaceful on the outside but one filled with amoral and snobbish eccentrics with all kinds of vices on the inside.
Annabelle is a fun, uncomplicated character who is soulful, devout, smart, and funny with penchant for cake. Both Jamie and I are English and we feature many English countryside rituals, institutions and customs in these stories.
Ultimately, readers who enjoy gentle pacing with a plot that twists and turns, features much fun, drama, quintessential Britishness, and small town murder all the way to the end will get a kick out of this series. It will make you laugh and you will, I hope, become invested in the characters and be rooting for them to come out on top.

Dr. Sharon A. Mitchell has worked as teacher, counselor, psychologist and consultant for several decades. Her Masters and PhD. degrees focused on autism spectrum disorders and helping kids to reach as high a level of independence as possible.

Autism Runs Away

Autism Talks & Talks
Karen is a grade 6 student who has Asperger’s Syndrome. She is bright, vivacious and highly verbal. Too verbal. She finds certain topics fascinating, studies them in-depth and is all too willing to share her knowledge with others. She goes on and on and on, not realizing that she is boring and alienating the other kids with her endless monologues. Her protective mom tries to shield her from the world, limiting her contact with peers in case she might be bullied.
Karen would like to be social. She remains on the fringe, looking at other adolescents having fun together and wondering if she could ever be a part of the group.
Karen has potential. Her inability to read body language and her lack of knowledge in social pragmatics get in the way of interacting with others her age and having friends. Autism Grows Up
In Autism Grows Up, Suzie is young woman with Asperger’s Syndrome who has withdrawn from a world that she finds alien and confusing. Suzie is a bright twenty-one old. Although she finished a regular grade 12, life stopped for her after high school. Ability is not the problem, nor is interest. There are interests that fascinate her. But, she has Asperger’s Syndrome and high anxiety. To her, the world is a harsh, scary place where she feels alien.
Suzie lives with her mother, Amanda. She spends much of her day sleeping and most of her nights on her computer, playing games, hacking and teaching herself programming code. Her mom wishes Suzie would get a job, go to school or at least help out around the house. Suzie feels that her time is amply filled with the fascinating world that lurks within her comp.
Amanda who has two full time jobs – the first involves working at the office every day, the second involves looking after Suzie. Amanda wants more for her daughter, but does not know how to help her move forward. Suzie excelled at academics in high school but is terrified of trying college. The demands of a job seem beyond her. At twenty-one, Suzie should be able to help out around the house but becomes engrossed in her computer, letting the rest of the world fall away. When pressure is put on her, Suzie suffers from paralyzing anxiety that results in morose withdrawal or lengthy tantrums. She is most content when alone in the basement with her computer. Suzie resents the time her mom spends with Jack and makes her mother pay for the hours not devoted to her daughter. With her brother’s support, Amanda begins making simple demands on Suzie and holding her accountable for shared responsibilities.

Autism is a spectrum disorder. About half of those diagnosed with autism have an intellectual disability while half have IQs ranging from average to far above average. This book focuses on those high functioning kids. Of young adults with high functioning adults, only about 10% are able to live independently, hold down a job or be successful at post-secondary school. While they may get through highly and do well academically, life too frequently ends for them there and they end up living in their parents’ basements, glued to a computer. Is Suzie doomed to this kind of existence?

I wrote a dark fantasy whose purpose was to break with tradition, the narrative addressing more existential issues rather than the old and overused formula of evil against good. In Dagger, the struggle between good and evil is not clear, nor easily identifiable. It is a tormented process, internal to the protagonist, with an outcome that is difficult to predict. I do not sell pre-cooked messages to the reader. I decided to create a story with multiple interpretations.
