The author of this endearing memoir is an 81-year-old retiree living in Florida. How he got there is an amazing tale. Born in Vienna as Erich Lifshütz, an upper middle class Jew with Polish roots, he left Austria with his parents in 1938, at the age of 8. As Jews, they were not permitted to take much money out of the country as they shuffled across France and came to settle in Italy, as the Nazis marched across borders. You would expect such an account to be filled with the horrors of war. But it is not.
Lamet is a natural storyteller. When he identifies himself as un confinato, he is referring to the system of enforced exile, or confinement of untrustworthy elements, which was put in place by Italian dictator Benito Mussolini after allying with Hitler. The author’s father made the fateful choice of returning to Poland to see family, leaving his wife and son on their own for the duration of the war. The author and his mother, whom he calls “Mutti,” are affectionate, yet she is as willful and worry-prone as he is active and adventure-prone.
They know as much freedom as one can, living al confino, in the backward, bug-infested mountain village of Ospedaletto, outside Naples. The others in their cohort of undesirables — which include a former Oxford professor, Eastern Europeans, and Italians — must check in with the police on a regular basis. But the local enforcers, it turns out, have no interest in strictly monitoring them or in bowing to Mussolini. Here are your orders, the man in charge recites, and then in an aside: “I am embarrassed to have to read this to you.”
What makes this book so animated are the cast of characters as they survive in the mind of Erich (Enrico, in his Italian incarnation). A shoemaker, young priests, teachers, neighbors — they are his extended family in times of trial and confusion, as the outsiders adapt to a colorless townscape of steep, dusty, narrow streets, a place without running water. Money is scarce, food not always plentiful, and when winter blows in, young Enrico “combed the woods for the scraps left behind by some careless woodsman” to keep the fire going. He lives by his wits.
“Mutti” falls in love with a Sicilian, Pietro, who becomes the boy’s stepfather. Seeing the three-way relationship develop through Enrico’s eyes is deeply real and touching. What might have turned out bad becomes a lesson in how human beings sometimes find happiness despite overwhelming odds. Separations are sutured back together through the poetry Pietro conveys. To the multilingual Enrico he once quoted at length from Dante’s Inferno, in Latin. The boy was struck that he could retain so much literature in his head. “All beautiful things are worth remembering,” Pietro explains. A certain radiance comes from Pietro that makes his generosity all the more enduring.
During their two and a half years in Ospedaletto, this patchwork family could only assume that Enrico’s father was dead. But before any news from Poland arrives, the war closes in on them. German troops ominously enter the town, and when one of the soldiers tries to communicate with the locals, Enrico, disobeying his mother’s warnings, blurts out something in German. Overcoming moments of palpitation, he and Gerhard became fast friends. It seems that Enrico (now “Erich” again) reminds the soldier of his 11-year-old back in Germany. Away from his men, he whispers to the lad: “I know you are Jewish, but you have nothing to fear.”
Not very long after this episode, the Americans liberate the town, and the confinati are finally allowed to leave. The author rides to Naples in an American jeep. Resettled there, he receives a high school and college education. Word from Poland arrives, past and present merge for the teenager on a train platform, and the fears he had contended with through a wandering childhood gradually melt away.
In 1950, he reaches America, where this tale of running, hiding, and surviving ends with a thoroughly uplifting epilogue.
Over the course of his narrative, the most gruesome sight Enrico faces is not a casualty of war but the embalmed corpse of a shriveled priest who died in the early 19th century and rested inside a glass case in the monastery five miles outside of Ospedaletto. Nic grew up in Penzance, Cornwall and spent these formative years either hanging out on the beach surfing and diving or taking photographs. At the age of 20 he talked himself into a job as an architectural assistant with a prestigious practice in London and spent the next seven years designing banks and partying in the city. By the age of 27, the wander lust hit him and he headed off to Montego Bay in Jamaica, where he both ran a diving school and freelanced as an architect for hoteliers. For five years he managed to keep this up and himself narrowly out of trouble. Until after one too many close calls, he decided it was time to leave. He boarded a plane and headed for Singapore to visit a Singaporean girl he’d got to know. Singapore or more pointedly the Singaporean girl managed to calm Nic down, somewhat, and for a dozen years he based himself out off Singapore working in various fields. He taught diving and escorted dive parties to remote locations throughout the South China Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Indonesian archipelago. Designed the odd hotel or two in the Maldives and Thailand and expanded his photographic repertoire to become one of the foremost photographers in the region. He also diversified, into the moving picture industry to eventually shoot several short films and documentaries including Burning Earth for the Discovery Channel. Where he spent many weeks camped out in the burning jungles of Borneo and hung out of helicopters with a camera on his shoulder. But he did find the time to get married to the same Singaporean girl and produce two sons, Adam born in 1996 and Dan a year later. In 2003 he moved back to the UK and built a house overlooking the Wye River, on the outskirts of Ross on Wye, in Herefordshire. The move back to the UK was prompted by two very different reasons. Firstly, the events in the US on the 11th September 2001 changed Asia; it had always been a lively place to live and work but atmosphere had changed. Throughout Malaysia and Indonesia a pronounced anti western attitude was taking hold, culminating in the Bali bombings at the Hard Rock Cafe, where Nic used to hang out along with his sons. The second was his awakening to environmental issues. The fires he filmed were certainly one of the catalysts; another was the visible degradation of the oceans and reefs he couldn’t help but notice. The coral bleaching of the Maldivian reefs, the raw sewage pumped into the ocean by hotel developers, mangrove swamps destroyed to make way for prawn farms and the over fishing, all taking a horrendous toll, plain for anybody to see. All prompted him to be a part of the solution rather than ignore these issues as the majority of the planet seemed to be doing. Armed with an idea inspired by villagers growing seaweed on one of his favourite remote islands groups Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan, he set about working on a concept. This concept entailed growing macro algae in marine farms along with fish and shellfish; the fish and shellfish already had a ready market and the macro algae could be processed to produce renewable fuels. Being the foolhardy and impetuous soul that he can be much of the time, Nic thought he could make this contribution on his own and set up a research company, Taylor Made Marine to work on his concept. The concept was good and he is still working on it today, although no longer alone but the financing of it was seriously flawed. And these flaws became evident in 2007, when the bank pulled the rug from beneath his property development company, developing sustainable and affordable housing, which provided the funding for the research. Resulting in the collapse of the company and seizure of his assets on which loans were secured. Undeterred by this catastrophe, Nic whose marriage had also disintegrated, a consequence of the stress but not before having another child this time a daughter named Shakira, moved to Plymouth. In Plymouth he joined forces with Plymouth University to continue with his research and work towards a PhD. Nic now spends his time equally divided between his research, the Plymstock Oaks Rugby Club, where he coaches the Under 15’s, runs several projects including coaching disabled rugby and using rugby as social inclusion vehicle to get kids off the streets. And his writing, his first book “A Plague of Dissent” is just being published and he is presently working on two sequels, Gaia’s Warriors and another with a working title of Revenge.

Q – So, what makes the Diana Hunter series special?
A – When I set out to write these books, I wanted to create something that mirrored exactly the kind of books I like to read. My top picks are always mystery novels, especially featuring female protagonists with attitude. Diana is badass and I can’t tell you how many readers tell me she reminds them of themselves. She makes you feel you can do anything!
The Diana Hunter books are a great mix of genres. There is nothing graphic or gratuitous in these books. Your Aunt Martha could definitely read them. But they are not “roses around the cottage door” –type mysteries. They are more hard-boiled with some romantic tension, suspense and thriller action to keep things interesting!
Overall, the Diana Hunter series is designed to keep you turning the pages – and I’ve made sure there’s never a dull moment.
Q – In what order should I read the books?
A – The Diana Hunter mysteries can be read and enjoyed in any order, however, Hunted is a prequel to the other books in the series. Unlike the other books, it is not a complete mystery. It relates the events that create the backdrop to the series and fills in some of Diana’s personality and motivations. You don’t have to have read the prequel to make sense of the later books but it helps.
I’ve made sure not to include any spoilers for those who are new to the characters and any existing fans of Diana’s adventures will still find plenty of fresh action and mystery as well as perhaps a few answers. All in all, there is something for everyone. The events in this prequel take place a few years before Snatched, the first book in the Diana Hunter series of mysteries.
If you do want to read them in order, I’d suggest the following sequence:
– Hunted (prequel)
– Snatched
– Stolen
– Chopped
Q – So, why should readers give these books a try?
A – Because the Diana Hunter series is a fast, fun, thrill-ride that takes no prisoners! Our heroine is kicks butt but has a soft center. We want her to win out even when she’s making poor decisions and alienating those who can, and want, to help her. I think most women will see a little, or a lot, of themselves in Diana Hunter.
Ultimately, readers who enjoy lightning-fast pacing with a plot that twists and turns all the way to the end will get a kick out of this series.
