Seventeen-year-old Mei Ling is kidnapped at the behest of a lecherous Dutch official, who organizes a mutiny when the ship’s captain places her under his protection.
Nanyang follows the adventures of Mei Ling and her brother, who sets out to rescue her, and their descendants amid land and sea battles of warring nations, natural disasters and rampant disease. They are caught up in historical events — in Europe as well as South-East Asia — in which notable English, Dutch and Javanese figures play their real-life roles. The story begins in China and ends soon after the founding of Singapore by Sir Stamford Raffles, who features in the book along with other personalities of the period, including Horatio Nelson and Captain James Cook.
The story reaches back to the fifteenth century and the voyages of China’s Admiral Zheng He with his fleet of the world’s largest sailing ships, during which he visited foreign shores from Java to the African continent. But the main period covered is from the middle of the seventeenth century to the founding and early years of Singapore in the first half of the nineteenth century. It begins with the Dutch raid on the Fujian village and ends in Singapore in the year of Raffle’s death.

At an early age I decided I wanted to be a foreign correspondent and author. I achieved both my goals. I was born in New Zealand and began my journalism career on The New Zealand Herald. I later worked for The Sydney Morning Herald and the Melbourne Herald before being hired by Reuter, working for the agency in Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Indonesia. I was a foreign correspondent in Asia for 30 years, which included fifteen years reporting for The New York Times with Hong Kong as my base.
I began writing fiction when I was a young journalist in Australia and had two short stories published in a leading magazine. My first success with a novel was The Peking Payoff, which was published in hard cover in 1975 by Macmillan Inc. in New York and in paperback by Hamlyn. Hamlyn subsequently published The Seizing of Singapore, Deadline in Jakarta and An H-Bomb for Alice. In 1988, I self-published Reunion, also a novel.
Following my ten years as a freelance foreign correspondent, from 1991 to 2001, based first in Singapore and then Malaysia, I wrote The Mahathir Legacy, a non-fiction work, which was published in Australia in 2003 by Allen & Unwin.
My epic Asian saga, Nanyang – published as both an Amazon (Kindle) eBook and as a CreateSpace) paperback – reflects my interest in the history of East Asia, where I have spent so much of my adult life, and the emigration of Chinese to South-East Asia, among them the ancestors of my wife Truus The Tiang Nio.
I recently turned my hand to a murder mystery, The Cut-Throat Razor Murders. It follows the publication of two earlier action-adventure works, The Unintentional Jihadi and The Lust of Comrade Lu, which is very relevant to the fraught relationship between Hong Kong and Beijing.

Some examples: I believed that God was sovereign, but I got frustrated when stuck in traffic. I read that in God’s presence is fullness of joy, but I kept chasing after money and what it can buy. I knew that Jesus was preparing a place for me, but I acted as if my house would be eternal if I just maintained
it well enough.
As I was trying to work through these issues, I didn’t find much to help me. (It may well exist; I just didn’t find it.) So I wrote this book to help me think through some of these issues. In essence, it is what I needed to hear.

When J. A. Cipriano was in second grade, his teacher gave everyone in class a journal to write down whatever they wanted. Their first subject was to write about something they didn’t like. J. A. chose to write about why he didn’t like writing. His reasoning was simple. He had bad handwriting. Even then, he was destined to be an engineer due to his messy scrawl.
Unfortunately, he found through the course of this little adventure that he actually liked writing. That year was sort of the high point for his writing career because he won a writing contest for the state. He got to go to a big dinner and his teacher was all dressed up.
He kept writing little stories, year after year, and in sixth grade, won another contest. In seventh grade, he broke his arm and got the cast signed by both Dean Koontz and Stan Lee. It is, by far, the coolest cast he’s owned. That was about the time he found video games and anime. His writing turned mostly toward fanfiction until about ninth grade when he wrote his first novel, a small book about twenty thousand words called Revelations. In sophomore year, he wrote two more books to complete the trilogy because he saw Star Wars that year and learned trilogies were the cool thing to do.
He rewrote Revelations during his senior year, and his wife swears it is the best thing he’s written. J.A. is not so sure. Every time he reads it, he cringes, but then again, he hates everything he writes, so there is that.
It was about that time, he got heavily involved in a fanfiction writing group, but that isn’t one hundred percent accurate. It was a world based on a popular anime but everything was created especially for this world. It made it so that every story someone wrote was unique.
Imagine writing a Star Wars novel set 1,000 years after A New Hope, where everything that happened was a distant memory and you get the idea. You have the force, some distant memories of the past, and that’s pretty much it.
He wrote about a million words (863K to be exact) for them before he decided to do his own thing. He wrote another novel. He put it in a drawer. He wrote another one that eventually became the basis for The Hatter is Mad. His next novel was Kill It With Magic, his first real novel. It’s not bad, but it’s bumpy. This is unfortunate because the books get loads better as the series progresses.
Since then, he’s written six more novels, four of which are in the Lillim Callina Series, and one in the Abby Banks series. The other is stuck in a drawer for time undetermined. He’s writing his next book now which is about werewolves fighting mummies in Ancient Egypt. After that, he will move onto Abby Banks 2. The Spy Within will come out in June or July.
J.A. also has three chinchillas. Two of them are grey, and because of this, they are named Slate and Cadmium. The third is named Jet because he’s black, and Jet is old English for black. See, creative. He also has a cat named Turtle. This does pose problems for his two-year-old from time to time.

I have always had an interest in fitness and exercise and personal development in general. I have always been someone who has had a keen interest in getting more out of myself while at the same time making it as easy as I possibly could to do so.
Working and having kids and a husband as you know forces you to look for shortcuts that work. That allow you to get more done in less time.
“The 60 Second System” is the result of many years of refining how I look at things and how I organize my life or at least those tasks that ordinarily I would classify as things I have to do but really don’t want to.
And really it’s less of a system and more of a philosophy. It’s a guiding principle that allows me to prioritize and organize those things I need to do allowing me to focus my energy and, in the end, get more done in quicker time.
I have many “60 Second System” ideas that I am in the process of putting down on paper and will probably create books on those topics and make them available here for all you Kindlers. For those topics that are important but maybe not book worthy I will keep you posted via my blog.
The first series of books will detail various fitness and exercise topics that are issues for all of us and certainly were for me as I tried to fulfil all my day to day activities while at the same time look after me and make sure that I stayed healthy and fit.

There are going to be things that you cannot physically due in order to help maintain the health of your baby and you. Just because someone doesn’t do it right away does not mean that it cannot or will not get done. Do not put your health or your baby’s health at risk!
There will be moments that you are going to wish you weren’t pregnant, but the reward of holding that precious baby at the end is well worth some of the pain that you will experience.

If you’re a sufferer from any kind of immune deficiency disorder, I especially want to extend a warm welcome to you. Welcome, my friend, to my wonderful world of completely safe and natural healing. Eventually, the conditions became severe and I began my long exposure to the medical profession and a cocktail of drugs that were supposed to balance my immune system and calm my allergies but, in the end, they only succeeded in making my life more miserable because of all the unpleasant side effects. Doctors rarely mention the negative consequences of the drugs they prescribe but I could see that my condition was becoming worse rather than getting better.
There were times when I suffered from bouts of depression and a complete lack of confidence, always conscious of the rashes and the embarrassing marks on my skin, the unexplained outbreaks of eczema and the fear of being disfigured by the horrible patches that appeared on my face and body. Sometimes it seemed that my immune system was attacking me rather than protecting me. In some ways, growing up was a nightmare. Like so many other unhappy people, I turned to food as a source of comfort and then I started to gain weight, which made me feel even worse! I was highly strung, super-sensitive, borderline depressed and often miserable. The drugs were no help whatsoever. The fact is that my immune system had been further compromised by the constant stream of allergies and by the medication that had been prescribed for my various conditions. And then, as if out of the blue, I met someone who turned my life around completely.
A friend was very concerned about me.
