When I’m pressed about what it is that i do, the best answer i can give is that I like to tell stories.
Often I tell these stories in a visual way through either Illustration or Photography (or a mix of the 2). But I have also, for a long time now, enjoyed writing stories as well.
I have written stories for years. When i was a teenager I started to play various Role Playing Games. This meant i was creating stories and characters all the time in order to run or play the games. As time went on, I started to write short stories set in these worlds that would serve as hand outs to the players to read that would help set the scene.
My first novel came about much later after settling down with my wife, and although I was not playing the RPG’s so much, (and haven’t done for a long time now) I still enjoyed the stories. So I decided to try and write my first book.

1. I despise whipped cream. There, I admitted it in writing. Let the ridiculing begin. 2. Even though I have lived as far south as Key Largo, Florida and as far north as Maine, I landed in the middle.
3. If I don’t make a conscious effort not to, I will drink nothing but tea morning, noon, and night. Hot tea, sweet tea, green tea – I love it all.
4. There doesn’t seem to be much in life that is better than coming home to a big dog who is overjoyed to see me. My other family members usually show significantly less enthusiasm about my return.
5. Singing in my bestest, loudest voice does not make my family put on their happy faces. This includes the big, loving dog referenced above.
6. Yes, I am aware that bestest is not a word.
7. Dorothy was right. There’s no place like home.
8. All of the numerous bottles in my shower must be lined up with their labels facing out. It makes me feel a little like Julia Roberts’ mean husband from the movie ‘Sleeping with the Enemy,’ but I can’t seem to control this particular quirk.
9. I love, love, love finding a great bargain.
10. Did I mention that I hate whipped cream? It makes my stomach churn to look at it, touch it, smell it, or even think about it. Great – now I’m thinking about it. Ick!

Tim began his career in Soviet Counterintelligence with the US Army Special Forces, the Green Berets. That was back in the Cold War days when, “We learned Russian so you didn’t have to,” something he did at the Presidio of Monterey alongside Recon Marines and Navy SEALs.
With the fall of the Berlin Wall, Tim switched from espionage to arbitrage. Armed with a Wharton MBA rather than a Colt M16, he moved to Moscow in the midst of Perestroika. There, he lead prominent multinational medical companies, worked with cosmonauts on the MIR Space Station (from Earth, alas), chaired the Association of International Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, and helped write Russia’s first law on healthcare.
Moving to Brussels during the formation of the EU, Tim ran Europe, Middle East, and Africa for a Johnson & Johnson company and traveled like a character in a Robert Ludlum novel. He eventually landed in Silicon Valley, where he launched new medical technologies as a startup CEO.
In his free time, Tim has climbed the peaks of Mount Olympus, hang glided from the cliffs of Rio de Janeiro, and ballooned over Belgium. He earned scuba certification in Turkey, learned to ski in Slovenia, and ran the Serengeti with a Maasai warrior. He acted on stage in Portugal, taught negotiations in Germany, and chaired a healthcare conference in Holland. Tim studied psychology in France, radiology in England, and philosophy in Greece. He has enjoyed ballet at the Bolshoi, the opera on Lake Como, and the symphony in Vienna. He’s been a marathoner, paratrooper, triathlete, and yogi.
Intent on combining his creativity with his experience, Tim began writing thrillers in 1996 from an apartment overlooking Moscow’s Gorky Park. The novel traces the fate of a German-Jewish family in Germany, France, America, China, and England in the first half of the twentieth century, as its members are buffeted by the forces of history rampaging through Europe.
In Hamburg, Germany, life is good for Robert and Hedda van Dornbach in 1924. Observant Jews, they enjoy all the comforts of modern life and a wide circle of family and friends. A patriotic German and ardent devotee of German culture, Robert served in the army in the Great War. Although he suffered financially then and in the subsequent period of hyper-inflation, he managed to restore his tobacco importing agency to its former prosperity.
Their two older children, Grethe (17) and Siegfried (16), do not appear to be following in their parents’ footsteps as regards adherence to Jewish religious practices, while Hermann (10) is still too young to decide for himself. Grethe is a bright young thing, who enjoys parties and intends to live and work in Palestine. To their young brother Hermann both Grethe and Siegfried seem to lead very glamorous and successful lives.
The even tenor of their existence is upset when Siegfried suddenly falls ill with meningitis. He recovers, but is affected both physically and mentally. Unable to resume his schooling, he is apprenticed as a clerk and then sent to America to learn the tobacco business.
After studying remedial gymnastics, Grethe moves first to Amsterdam and then to Paris, where she mixes with other young exiles like herself. In the summers, together with a group of students, she goes to the south of France to work on the grape harvest. She has a long-standing on-again off-again relationship with a young Jewish inventor, Roman Vishnitzky, an adherent first of Zionism, then of Socialism and Communism, who eventually persuades her to abandon her Zionist ideas.
Hermann, the only child left at home, struggles to keep up with his schoolwork, and is deputed to dispatch the weekly food packages his mother prepares for her two older children.
Siegfried learns a great deal about the tobacco industry in his year in Kentucky and Georgia, sending home letters describing life in the Deep South, including a vivid account of the Kentucky Derby. He is so successful in his work that the American company offers him the post of manager of their office and factory in Shanghai. He accepts, and en route from America to China is able to spend a few weeks with his family in Hamburg. He begins to regret having agreed to go to China, but is unable to break his contract.
In the spring of 1929, after a three-week journey on the Trans-Siberia Railway, he reaches Shanghai and soon afterwards kills himself. His parents never really recover from the blow, and when Hitler comes to power in Germany they are incapable of doing anything about leaving the country.
Hermann, who continues to adhere to the religious way of life of his parents, is active in a Zionist youth movement. He intends to go and live in Israel, but is rejected for agricultural training on health grounds. He is thus unable to obtain a Certificate entitling him to enter Mandatory Palestine as an agricultural worker.
Roman Vishnitzky volunteers for the Republican side in the Spanish Civil War and is killed. In the south of France, where Grethe teaches gymnastics in the summer, she meets Alex, a Russian exile and disciple of the philosophy of Krishnamurti. They fall in love and start living together.
The Nazi authorities in Germany increasingly restrict the freedom and rights of the Jews. Robert rejects the idea of emigration, being bound to his business, his elderly parents, and his property. He sues one of his neighbors, who strikes him as a result of his objection to the musical evenings Robert holds in his home. Robert wins the court case, but has a heart attack soon afterwards and dies.
Hermann tries to find a way of leaving Germany, but is unsuccessful. At the Hebrew class he attends he meets a young woman, Felizia Lempel, and they strike up a friendship. He introduces her to Hedda, who approves of her and encourages her son to consider marriage.
On Kristallnacht, the night in November 1938 when Jewish businesses and synagogues are attacked and Jewish men arrested, Hedda and Hermann escape by virtue of a misreading of their name by the Nazi officials sent to arrest them. Hedda cables her relatives in England, and they arrange for Hermann’s immediate emigration. War between England and Germany breaks out soon afterwards, followed by Germany’s invasion of France. In the so-called unoccupied French zone, Alex and Grethe try to evade arrest and deportation.
It is 1940 in war-time Hamburg; Jews are obliged to abandon their homes and possessions and are crowded into a specially designated ‘ghetto’, while being subjected to a wide range of restrictions and deprivations. Transports ‘to the East’ begin, and gradually the Jews are removed from the city. Hedda is sent to Theresienstadt, the ‘model ghetto’ in occupied Czechoslovakia.
In Vichy France, Grethe gives birth to a little boy, whom she names Henri Siegfried. She and Boris try to evade the authorities, temporarily fleeing to a village in the mountains. While London is experiencing the Blitz, Hermann is helped by his relatives to gain a clerical position with a Jewish charity and also, together with Felizia, is offered a job as house-parents in a hostel for Jewish children who have been brought to England in the framework of the Kindertransport rescue operation. As a result, he and Felizia are able to get married.
In 1942 Grethe and Boris return to Limours-sur-Mer with little Henri Siegfried in order to sit out the rest of the war. In the hostel in London Felizia is kept busy looking after her baby daughter, Eleanor, and trying to tend to the refugee children, many of whom are disturbed or have difficulties in adjusting to their new life. Hedda dies of starvation and neglect six months after reaching Theresienstadt, dimly aware of the birth of her two grandchildren elsewhere in Europe.
In a brief epilogue we learn that Henri and Eleanor meet when they are both adults, and become good friends.

Q – So, what makes the Inspector David Graham series special?
A – When I set out to write these books, I wanted to create something that played like a movie in the reader’s mind. They are books with action, but also soul. They are ensemble pieces containing regular characters that are well drawn with strong personalities, humor and some tragedy. The Inspector David Graham books feel, to me, like good friends that never let me down. Every time we sit down to plan the books, I love to find out what the characters are going to get up to next!
The Inspector David Graham books are a great mix of genres. They sit firmly in the cozy mystery category and are set on the beautiful island of Jersey in the English Channel between Britain and France. They feature a British detective who is part-Sherlock Holmes, part-Poirot, and, of course, uniquely himself.
Q – In what order should I read the books?
A – The Inspector David Graham cozy mysteries can be read, and enjoyed, in any order. The Case of the Hidden Flame is the second book in the series and is set on Jersey just as Inspector Graham takes up his new post. All the books are complete mysteries.
There is a prequel, The Case of the Screaming Beauty, that provides background to the series but I’ve made sure not to include any spoilers for those who are new to the characters and any existing fans of Graham’s adventures will still find plenty of fresh action and mystery as well as perhaps a few answers in it. All in all, there is something for everyone.
If you do want to read them in order, I’d suggest the following sequence:

– The Case of the Fallen Hero
Q – Why should readers give these books a try?
A – Because the Inspector Graham series is a gentle, but colorful romp through the wealthy but isolated English island, a place that is picturesque and peaceful but one filled with amoral and snobbish eccentrics with all kinds of vices.
Graham is a complex character who is intriguing from the get-go and yet evolves throughout the series while his sidekicks are worthy, interesting characters in their own right. We feature many English countryside rituals, institutions and customs in these stories.
Ultimately, readers who enjoy gentle pacing with a plot that twists and turns, features much fun, drama, quintessential British-ness, and, of course, small town murder all the way to the end will get a kick out of this series.

I first became interested in the Forex markets back in early 2002 when I attended a stock trading meeting at a private residence. One guy announced that he had made a killing by trading the Japanese Yen against the US dollar over a period of about 18 months. He had proof to back his claims, so obviously this got me interested. Who knew that the individual on the street could even trade currencies? Up until then, it was only the banks or very wealthy individuals that had access to this type of trading. So now a whole new industry was born.It wasn’t easy at first as there weren’t many reputable brokers around and their platforms were unreliable at best. The spreads were huge and the internet was still predominately dial up. The forums began popping up and the ‘trading gurus’ appeared. A lot of stock, futures and options trading systems were converted to suit the FX market, which was an entirely different beast due to there being no actual central exchange, and a market that ran 24hrs a day for 5 days a week. There was money to be made by those that were smart at the time, either by straddling the news releases or exploiting the carry trade. But brokers also got smarter and either shut these advantages down or created trading conditions that made it difficult to profit from them.My problem was, I listened to too many so called ‘gurus’ and got caught up in all the hype. Always thinking they were smarter than me as their systems were very complex, and therefore must be better than anything I could come up with. So for a few years, I just bounced around different systems, blowing accounts and generally giving back any profits I had managed to obtain. There were both good times and bad times. But I never gave up.I soon realized that some of the ‘gurus’ were actually the real deal, so I started to pay attention to them and see what they had to offer. In the meantime, I became smarter with my money management, got out of the day trading habit and generally simplified my trading methods so they were easy to implement and explain. I have also dabbled with building my own trading robots with mixed success and use them at times to assist me with my trading. I generally prefer to manually manage a trade once I am in as I find the human brain can perform a lot better than a robot that works on certain inputs. After constantly looking at Forex charts for the last 13 years or so, I have a pretty good idea of patterns etc, and generally have a fair idea of what may happen next on a chart. A trading robot just can’t do this.These days, I make a living from trading Forex, trading mainly off the 4hr or Daily charts. I can live anywhere in the world I choose, as long as I have internet access. My systems are simple and boring at times. But they are profitable overall, which at the end of the day, is all that matters. I love trading Forex and I see it as having a huge potential to make some serious income. It is not as easy as some would make you believe, but if you keep it simple, control your money management, and be consistent, then there is no reason that you too shouldn’t succeed in the world of Forex trading.
