It is a whole roller coaster of text and should not be read by those who have difficulties with equilibrioception.
Here is a synopsis:
Despite one of the characters questioning the necessity of following a clear linear narrative, Archipelago does have one. Based in part on the ‘Philomela Myth’, the story is merely a vehicle to convey underlying themes – with varying styles for each chapter, mimetically corresponding to different environmental factors of the islands in the Galápagos Archipelago. This abstraction echoes the variegated nature of each of us in our communities, towns and islands.
The novel is book-ended by prologue and epilogue, functioning to draw the reader into an apparently prosaic world of one ordinary day in the lives of four people. These are as follows: Stephen Rei, junior sub-editor of an international publishing house; Philomena Cordova, émigré from the Galápagos Islands; Debra King, micro-biologist and Philomena’s step-sister; and Parveen Pattni, who works in her father’s newsagents.
It begins one October 1998 Saturday morning, with suggestion that Stephen and Philomena are aiming to meet on this day, but this is deception. In reality Philomena begins a lengthy ‘Joycean’ odyssey through the town, during which she meets Parveen, ruminates on her past, experiences the maelstrom of mercantile life, writes a short poem, and contemplates the nature of language. The day ends wickedly, with Terry King (Debra’s husband) raping her.
Stephen discovers a body on a train and Philomena is complicit in this (as revealed in the novel’s dénouement) for the body is Terry.
Suzel’s tale is similarly unhappy. Her husband, following one too many violent incidents, hospitalises her.
It is only Parveen, with her emergent sexuality, who has a happy outcome on meeting and falling in love with an American lady, whilst realising an innate talent to paint.
Stephen Rei is the most sea-changed character. Initially seen as hesitant and hedonistic, as he reads the sage words of Philomena he acquires a newly contented demeanour. Not, however, entailing resignation.
Other sub plots in the chapter’s vignettes echo perils and concerns of the major characters, including the tale of Mr Dibs, Suzel’s talking dog; political discussions between two elderly gentlemen; and a quasi-philosophical exegesis of time and memory, presented within the narrative as a play. These illustrate in artistic verisimilitude this presented tragedy of the ‘Philomela Myth’ and thereby mirror worrying circumstances of how we reconcile the antagonistic forces of segregation and connection.
As the novel ends we emerge from the ‘town world’ into our own surface reality – that which we are a part of, possessing the ineluctable and present-day concerns of co-existence.

First of all, I want to thank you for expressing interest in some of my products! My name is George, I’m a certified personal trainer from Canada.
I’ll start off by saying I’m not the biggest guy or the most ripped person you’ll ever meet and this has never really been my goal. In fact, I started working out to overcome my biggest insecurity when I was younger, which was my self-confidence. This was due to my height measuring only 5 foot 5 inches (168cm), it pushed me down to attempt anything I ever wanted to achieve in life. You may be going through some challenges right now or you may simply want to learn more about fitness or diet in order to get more fit and I can certainly relate.
For me personally, I was always interested in the fitness world and wanted to gain some muscle due to the numerous bulling in my teenage years about my height and my overweight body. I figured I can’t do anything about my height but I sure can do something about how my body looks like. This was the beginning of my transformation journey. I had no idea where to start but I just got started. I felt lost and scared at times. I was worried that other people would make fun of me for doing the exercises the wrong way. I always wished I had a friend that was next to me who was knowledgeable enough to help me get started and “show me the ropes”.
After a lot of work, studying and many many trial and errors, many began to notice how I was getting more fit and how I was beginning to form a strong interest in this topic. This led many friends and new faces to come to me and ask me for fitness advice. At first it seemed odd when people asked me to help them get in shape. But what kept me going is when they started to see changes in their own body and told me it’s the first time that they actually saw real results! From there, more people kept coming to me and it made me realize after so much reading and studying in this field that it actually did help me but it also allowed me to help others. This is when I decided to dive deeper into the fitness world. I’m now a fully certified personal trainer and I’m also currently doing a bachelor in University majoring in a Kinesiology program.
All this to say, I started just like you. I’ve asked myself how I could do it. I’ve read for countless hours, studied, doubted myself, failed, succeeded, and learned a lot on how our body works. First of all, I want to thank you for expressing interest in some of my products! My name is George, I’m a certified personal trainer from Canada.
I’ll start off by saying I’m not the biggest guy or the most ripped person you’ll ever meet and this has never really been my goal. In fact, I started working out to overcome my biggest insecurity when I was younger, which was my self-confidence. This was due to my height measuring only 5 foot 5 inches (168cm), it pushed me down to attempt anything I ever wanted to achieve in life. You may be going through some challenges right now or you may simply want to learn more about fitness or diet in order to get more fit and I can certainly relate.
For me personally, I was always interested in the fitness world and wanted to gain some muscle due to the numerous bulling in my teenage years about my height and my overweight body. I figured I can’t do anything about my height but I sure can do something about how my body looks like. This was the beginning of my transformation journey. I had no idea where to start but I just got started. I felt lost and scared at times. I was worried that other people would make fun of me for doing the exercises the wrong way. I always wished I had a friend that was next to me who was knowledgeable enough to help me get started and “show me the ropes”.
After a lot of work, studying and many many trial and errors, many began to notice how I was getting more fit and how I was beginning to form a strong interest in this topic. This led many friends and new faces to come to me and ask me for fitness advice. At first it seemed odd when people asked me to help them get in shape. But what kept me going is when they started to see changes in their own body and told me it’s the first time that they actually saw real results! From there, more people kept coming to me and it made me realize after so much reading and studying in this field that it actually did help me but it also allowed me to help others. This is when I decided to dive deeper into the fitness world. I’m now a fully certified personal trainer and I’m also currently doing a bachelor in University majoring in a Kinesiology program.
All this to say, I started just like you. I’ve asked myself how I could do it. I’ve read for countless hours, studied, doubted myself, failed, succeeded, and learned a lot on how our body works. An award-winning author, playwright, director, and producer, Alretha Thomas’s background is as diverse as her personality. She started at the age of ten when her 5th grade teacher picked and read her short story assignment in front of the class—that simple, loving act empowered a new writer. Continuing in high school, her numerous original oratorical conquests on the Speech Team led her to a journalism concentration at USC.
Upon graduating, Alretha soon realized that her interest in journalism was not heartfelt. While at the taping of a live sitcom, the producer noticed her and encouraged her hand at modeling. Modeling didn’t mean much to her, but it did lead her to acting and a NAACP Theatre Award Nomination (1993) for BEST ACTRESS. Alretha left acting and began to write full time. Her church gave her an outlet to fulfill her writing desires through their Liturgical Fine Arts Department wherein Alretha penned twelve theatre pieces, six of which she directed—the community response was overwhelming.
This led to full-length plays outside of the church. In 2002, The Stella Adler Theater presented A Shrine to Junior. The play was nominated for a NAACP Theatre Award and in 2004, Alretha’s play, Civil Rites, was the recipient of a NAACP Theatre Award. Her play Grandpa’s Truth ran at the Inglewood Playhouse in Inglewood, California in 2006, and was extended more than once by popular demand. Not only did radio station KJLH support by recommending this production to its listeners, but notables like the Mayor of Inglewood, Roosevelt Dorn, and music legends like Freda Payne and Stevie Wonder had critical acclaim for Grandpa’s Truth. This wonderful piece was featured on Channel 5 (KTLA News) by Entertainment Reporter, Sam Rubin. Additionally, in 2007, Alretha’s play that she wrote and directed, Sacrificing Simone, had a successful run at Stage 52 in Los Angeles and was called “an inspirational crowd pleaser” by the Los Angeles Times and in 2009, Alretha’s groundbreaking One, Woman Two Lives, starring Kellita Smith (The Bernie Mac Show), directed by four-time NAACP Image Award Best Director recipient Denise Dowse, garnered rave reviews from critics and audiences.
In between plays, Alretha’s first novel Daughter Denied was launched in 2008 and has received glowing reviews from readers and book clubs across the country. Representing her books, Alretha has been the guest on many radio shows and television shows including San Francisco Public Affairs show Bay Sunday with Barbara Rodgers on KTLA Channel 5. Tim began his career in Soviet Counterintelligence with the US Army Special Forces, the Green Berets. That was back in the Cold War days when, “We learned Russian so you didn’t have to,” something he did at the Presidio of Monterey alongside Recon Marines and Navy SEALs.
With the fall of the Berlin Wall, Tim switched from espionage to arbitrage. Armed with a Wharton MBA rather than a Colt M16, he moved to Moscow in the midst of Perestroika. There, he lead prominent multinational medical companies, worked with cosmonauts on the MIR Space Station (from Earth, alas), chaired the Association of International Pharmaceutical Manufacturers, and helped write Russia’s first law on healthcare.
Moving to Brussels during the formation of the EU, Tim ran Europe, Middle East, and Africa for a Johnson & Johnson company and traveled like a character in a Robert Ludlum novel. He eventually landed in Silicon Valley, where he launched new medical technologies as a startup CEO.
In his free time, Tim has climbed the peaks of Mount Olympus, hang glided from the cliffs of Rio de Janeiro, and ballooned over Belgium. He earned scuba certification in Turkey, learned to ski in Slovenia, and ran the Serengeti with a Maasai warrior. He acted on stage in Portugal, taught negotiations in Germany, and chaired a healthcare conference in Holland. Tim studied psychology in France, radiology in England, and philosophy in Greece. He has enjoyed ballet at the Bolshoi, the opera on Lake Como, and the symphony in Vienna. He’s been a marathoner, paratrooper, triathlete, and yogi.

Unlike Benjamin, he does not maintain mistresses, write pornography and (sadly) he does not have ownership of such a company. He is not a sociopath (at least by his own reckoning) and all versions of his life are aware of and freely communicate with each other. More in keeping with ‘Alex Warren’, Zach was raised in Glasgow and has spent many years working in Central Scotland.
