It is not to keep an avaricious and toxic economic model afloat. And it is certainly not (with no apology to Milton Friedman) to make a profit.
From our perspective, business is nothing less than a spiritual discipline, it requires the same integrity, commitment, intentionality, courage, discipline, and compassion as any other spiritual discipline. Spiritual disciplines honor life, in all its forms, as having innate and intrinsic value simply because it exists. It’s the honoring of this value—the ennobling of this value—that is called forth when we approach business as a spiritual undertaking. It is the compassionate thing to do.

While listening to recollections of abuse from the victim’s journal, she remembers many of her own experiences with the man. Though she officially forgave Carl years earlier, she is shocked by the intensity of her emotions. During the week, she stumbles upon a devotional that grabs her attention and she finally understands forgiveness is not always a one-time thing. She must forgive every time the memories surface.
Lizzy takes a trip to pick apples in the fall. In the peaceful calm of the beautiful mountaintop orchard, she has a revelation. Her forgiveness of Carl is like Nolle Prossing a case. Familiar with court terms, the legal phrase arrests her attention. To Nolle Prosse a case is to cease pursuit of prosecution. She determines she will Nolle Prosse her case against Carl. She will forgive him. She will no longer hold his wrongs against him. She will move forward as a precious child of God, with a Heavenly Father who loves and values her.
Lizzy and her family are invited to go out west to spend a week with her sister DEBORAH’s college roommate. The time at the ranch gives Lizzy a much-needed opportunity to rest and reflect on the things God is teaching her. Her hostess, MICKEY, also went through an abusive relationship and the two women strengthen and encourage each other through their common experiences. Mickey challenges Lizzy to look for ways she can minister to others by what she’s been through.
Lizzy’s first opportunity comes the next spring when she helps a woman leave an abusive boyfriend. Another contact is made at a charity event, when a woman asks about her story. She shares her past, and the woman begs her to consider speaking to the teenage girls at her church.
When Lizzy leaves the event, she sees Tucker in the parking lot. The attraction between the two has not lessened. This time Tucker feels free to pursue her. He asks her out for dinner and a movie, and Lizzy accepts.
Lizzy and Tucker begin dating. Understanding her past, he moves slowly and does not pressure her for anything more than friendship. Lizzy is uncomfortable at first, even though she likes Tucker, but soon she begins to relax and thoroughly enjoy his company.
As their relationship progresses, Lizzy becomes increasingly concerned about Tucker’s political life. She attends a luncheon where Tucker is speaking and feels like a fish out of water. She fears that, in spite of her feelings for Tucker, she will not be what he needs as a companion in the political realm.
Unbeknownst to Lizzy, Tucker has begun to feel a bit disillusioned with politics. Though he knows the Lord placed him in his senatorial position, he now feels God leading him in a different direction. After talking with a prosecutor friend from law school, he decides to pursue a position in the District Attorney’s Office.
Lizzy has an opportunity to give a presentation about abuse to a group of teenage girls in her church. She prepares her talk as though it was a fairy tale and ends by revealing the story is about her. She tells the group about a young girl’s dreams of marriage and a family, then of the horror of marriage to Carl. She mentions the signs of an abuser that were present before they married, signs that could have saved her had she known what to look for. Lizzy leaves the presentation thrilled with how God is using her negative experience to help others.
Eventually, Tucker shares with Lizzy that he will not be running for re-election. She is dismayed and fears he might be giving up his position for her. He assures her the change is of God. She is amazed how easily God worked out a situation for which she could see no solution.
Tucker and Lizzy date for nearly two years. Lizzy gradually begins to know she can trust him. Tucker consults his parents about inviting Lizzy and her family for a trip to his cabin on Whitby Mountain for a week of winter fun. They agree Tucker has been wise to move slowly and if he feels peace about extending the invitation, he should proceed.
Lizzy and her family are pleased to accept. Snow begins to fall as the group drives to the mountain and by morning, the ground is covered in a beautiful blanket of white. Both Lizzy and Tucker awaken early and decide to go for a walk in the winter wonderland.
Overcome with feelings for her, Tucker finally tells Lizzy he loves her and the two share a romantic kiss. Though Lizzy feels like she loves him, she is taken aback and cannot think straight. Tendrils of fear begin to uncurl at the edges of her mind. Lizzy and Tucker return to the cabin to have breakfast and head for the ski slopes.
By the time they arrive, Lizzy is feeling smothered and trapped. Suddenly afraid and overwhelmed with memories of Carl, she insists on staying with her young nieces on the bunny slope rather than skiing with Tucker. With his usual easy-going manner, he gives Lizzy her space and heads for the ski lift with MARSHALL, Lizzy’s brother-in-law. In a full-blown panic mode, Lizzy escapes to the women’s restroom and pours her heart out to her Lord.
She begins to relax, but still feels edgy and does not want to be close to Tucker. She spends the day with her nieces and keeps her distance during the evening. At two a.m., Tucker awakens feeling strongly he should check on Lizzy. He tiptoes to her room and finds her in the middle of a severe asthma attack. He awakens her sister and brother-in-law, but insists on taking Lizzy to the hospital himself.
Lizzy is treated in the ER and allowed to return to the cabin. She awakens mid-morning the next day with no memory of their return. Her breathing is back to normal, and she feels ready to take on the world. Her sister immediately sets her straight, insisting she rest and take it easy. Lizzy shares some of her feelings of confusion about Tucker with Deborah. Her sister shares that Tucker sat in Lizzy’s room all night to make sure someone was there should she awaken and need help. Lizzy understands her confusion is born from the fear of making another mistake. Deborah lets her know she and Marshall love Tucker and feel he is nothing like Carl, but assures her they understand she must decide for herself.
Tucker returns from the slopes by mid-afternoon, unable to enjoy himself knowing Lizzy might not be feeling well. The three decide to watch a movie in the home theater and Tucker promptly falls asleep. Lizzy gazes at his face and is suddenly overwhelmed with love for him. The fear and anxiety vanish, and she knows she can fully trust him with her love. She finally has complete peace, and all the fears and doubts melt away. A few days slip by during which she tries to figure out how to tell Tucker she loves him. One night, she awakens with a beautifully simple idea. She slips a note under his door that says, “Tucker, I love you. Lizzy.”
The trip winds down with happy times full of love, family, and winter adventure. In the spring, Tucker surprises Lizzy with a proposal in the courtroom. She is amazed how far the Lord has brought her. She went from feeling lower than dirt after escaping Carl, to being a survivor but holding the belief that she was now damaged goods, to truly understanding God’s love for her. Lizzy accepts Tucker’s proposal eagerly, at peace and ready to start her new life with him by her side.
