Emily Elizabeth Rooper was born in Hammersmith, London, UK in 1976. Daughter of Rupert and Margaret Belsley, accountant and doctor, wife of James Rooper and mother of two children Lizzy and Connor, Emily spent most of her adult life doing what she wished to do since she was a little girl, teaching English literature in school. And just like in most cases her story of addiction started suddenly and well, went on long enough to ensure serious consequences.
“It all started on my 32nd birthday when my friends took me to a casino for the first time. They thought I should let go of work, loosen up a bit. At first, I just played for fun but by the end of that same night, I was so deep I forgot about my little children.”
Emily’s life changed after that. She started playing poker every day, sometimes returning home a little too late. She spent nights playing online games and oversleeping in the morning. Her husband tried to persuade her to seek professional help, but Emily refused.
Eventually, she lost her job at the school due to her regular lateness and unprofessional looks. With no money coming in and almost all of her savings gone, Emily was now in a situation no one would envy. Which could become even worse if she were to fight alone.
“The thought of losing James and my children was unbearable. And that pain is what helped me in the end.”
It was hard for Emily to stop.
“I wanted to have my family back. I wanted my children to see me more, the old me. I wanted my husband to respect me once again.”
It took Emily two long years to completely quit playing. It was hard and painful, and almost impossible. But she did it with the help of her family and friends. Which is something not everyone can and not everyone still has at that stage.
Fortunately for Emily, she managed to return to her old lifestyle. Because of James’s work they moved to the United states. Her family is now safe and Emily herself is teaching again just in another school. They now reside in Pasadena, California.
Going back, Emily remembers all the horrible days and nights, all the time lost and refuses to even play cards with friends or do anything with bets, even the ones that don’t include money.
In 2014, Emily started writing down her experience as part of the healing process. The diary notes later became part of this book. She called it “Gambling addiction: an insider’s view.” In this book, Emily wrote about herself and included stories of other women and men, whose lives seemed just as tragic to her, as had been her own.
“There was all this pain and I wanted others to know about it. I decided to turn my writings into a book so that others can read and learn from our experience and hopefully never do the same again.”
Emily Rooper’s book is true, sincere and is addressed to men and women who fight the same urge every day.
“America was my fresh start. I really needed it.”
With James busy at work and children at school, Emily too wanted to go back to her teaching days and put the past behind her. She went to interviews in different schools but no one would offer her a teaching position.
“I got tired of hearing these polite rejections and seeing compassionate faces. I had to try something else. Something different.”
Going to the remote market was a very radical thing to do but Emily believed it could be the way.
“I used to give private lessons when I was younger. This is similar to sitting in a room with a student, only better, more advanced in every way.”
Deciding something and actually doing it is not the same thing. Emily learned that even with her skills and knowledge, it wasn’t easy to be hired.
“It was helpful that I didn’t have to tell them about my previous issues, however, the field itself presented quite a challenge. The important thing is not to despair when you don’t succeed from the first attempt. Have patience and you will eventually have everything you want.”
Emily resides with her family in Pasadena, California. She’s been teaching remotely for over two years now.
“I wrote the book about the gambling addiction because I believed that people would learn from my mistakes and choose a different path. And I wrote my second book “A Guide to Your Dream “In-house” Job: In a World of New Possibilities,” because I thought that my experience in the remote market would help newcomers have a better and a quicker start in their remote careers.”

I was born in Gloucestershire, England and later moved to London where I grew up surrounded by books, paintings and antiques. My Scottish father was an artist and playwright, my Australian mother was a teacher, and my elder sister was a successful author first published at age 16. The classic Victorian author Mrs Elizabeth Gaskell was a great, great, great aunt, we were a bookish family. When birthdays came around, no one was asked what they wanted. As a child I never owned a bike or scooter, the question was simply, “Which book do you want this year?” My most treasured possessions are still my books.
I travelled a great deal as a child and young adult, to India, the Middle East, Scandinavia and Australia, but always returned to England. Starting in my teens, I worked in many literary capacities as a publishers’ reader, a television researcher and script writer, an editor, literary critic and published numerous short stories and articles. For a few years I worked as a tutor to other script writers, and met some great friends through that. Then motherhood took precedence. Having three young daughters, two of whom were identical twins, writing had to take a back seat.
When my beloved Italian partner died of cancer, I decided I would miss him too much to continue the same lifestyle.
Instead I moved to Australia where I now live in a semi-rural area of exceptional beauty, watching the amazing birds and wildlife, while writing full length novels.
My passion is for late English medieval history and this forms the background for my historical fiction. I also have a love of fantasy and the wild freedom of the imagination, with its haunting threads of sadness and evil. Although all my books have romantic undertones, I would not class them purely as romances. Although we all wish to enjoy some romance in our lives, there is also a yearning for adventure, mystery, suspense and experience. My books include all of this and more, but my greatest loves are the beauty of the written word, and the utter fascination of good characterisation. Bringing my characters to life and taking the reader with me, is my principal aim.
I am now self publishing my books, as I found that traditional publishing is not what it used to be. I now have total contol over content, covers and titles. With advice from my lovely agent Sheila Drummond, we have hopefully everything covered.
