I’m a New Zealand-based, American writer of paranormal & occult nonfiction books. Following a series of psychic experiences in my early twenties, I became obsessed with the dark side of the occult & paranormal. Very soon thereafter, I found myself constructing an elaborate evocation mirror per the ancient conjuring book The Lesser Key of Solomon or Goetia. These spirit conjuring experiments resulted in poltergeist intrusions, astral attachments and bizarre fugue states.
Then at the tail-end of almost a decade of traumatic blackout experiences I began finding messages written to myself during these amnesic episodes. These notes lead me on a journey into mind control conspiracies and their relation to occult rituals and dark entities.

I was born in South Carolina but moved to New York when I was three years old. I went to Professional Children’s School in NYC where I was exposed to the arts. Although I loved writing from the time that I was eight years old, the passion was fueled after I got into high school and college where I majored in it.
Once I was old enough to hold a pencil correctly, I began writing stories about getting the baby sister that I so badly yearned for. I’d write every night before bed until one day my mom told my older brother and me that she was going to have a baby. We were both beyond ecstatic, although my brother cried when we learned that the baby was a girl. I screamed for joy because I finally had my sister. Then about a year later, my mom gave us a little brother. Four years after that, we got another baby sister and two years later, another sister. Moral of the story: Be careful what you write for.
The idea for Lucy Green Eyes came into thought in 1997. My mother would always talk about what her life was like as a young girl having to run from her strict grandmother’s switches, and dodging dirty old men in the cotton field, outrunning trucks that’d be in hot pursuit of her and finding ways to become invisible to her molester. Then one day my sister and I said, “Hey Ma, your life can be a book.” Hence the birth of Lucy Green Eyes.

# Quantaman’s prose style is concise and staccato (“He reckons the rump in the Diet will pressure the ZEST tribunal to rubberstamp Nozokuroba’s wunderkind”), sprinkled with real and invented slang as well as the haikulike inner thoughts of his characters. The protagonists are terse and single-minded, yet Quantaman’s world is so immersive and foreign that they don’t feel flat. The plot leaps about in time and between storylines, maintaining a dynamism that keeps a reader on his toes. There is much here that will likely enlist fans for further adventures set in this idiosyncratic universe.

Here are my thought processes and life experiences that’ve gone into the eBook “Loose Threads.”
# I drove a taxi in Vancouver, BC for 27 years. I worked the night shift, which starts in midafternoon and ends in the wee hours of the morning.
# Daytime customers worry about getting to work on time, making appointments, meeting schedules and so on. Their concerns are upfront and objective, in other words, going from point A to point B. Nighttime customers go out with friends, have a few laughs and forget about anything serious. Their mindsets are recreational and subjective.
# Over the years I’ve seen and heard the best and worst of human nature. Just part of the job.
# Folks change when the sun goes down. After a few drinks the masks come off. Minds take flight. The shyness vanishes. The whole world becomes high adventure or rosy romance until nonsense conquers all. On the way home, groggy customers will swear they’ve had a wonderful weekend, even when they can’t recall the details. Some will blurt out secrets they’d never tell their sweethearts, friends or family members. Others become confused or even belligerent.
# It’s fortunate I was never seriously injured from disgruntled customers or errant vehicles, considering the number of times my cab was totaled by drunk or berserk drivers.
# Cabdrivers wear many hats: transporter, advisor, jump starter, problem solver, bouncer, bulk hauler, fee collector… all the while fronting the friendly ear of a bartender.
# I learned one hard and fast rule. Most hookers are honest to a fault. They don’t always tell the whole truth, but they don’t push you off a cliff. They can’t afford to lie because they operate in that stratum of society which is best left “under the rug.” Hookers don’t have standardized price tags or government seals of approval to fall back on; they have only themselves to trade.
# Vancouver wasn’t the city of my childhood, so when I began in the cab business, I didn’t know half of the shortcuts or restricted approaches to common destinations. For example, hotels are often located beside major byways with traffic dividers. Unless you arrive from the right direction, you won’t have access to the hotel.
# It was the ladies of the night who taught me the shortcuts and whether to drop off at the front door or the back door. They had ulterior motives, of course, since the shortcuts saved them money on the meter. Yet I got valuable info that made me a better cabdriver, which over time paid dividends.
# One night I drove across Vancouver’s busiest bridge. I was ten-car lengths behind the car ahead whose brake lights flashed, the passenger door opened and out tumbled a body. The driver slowed but never stopped. After two somersaults , the body stood up and waved frantically. I pulled to stop and learned she was a lady of night who had a bad date and no money. She asked me to take her to an apartment where she promised I’d get paid. When we arrived at the place, it turned out her boyfriend was out, but she managed to convince the apartment manager to fork out for the cab fare.
# This illustrates my point that hookers don’t lie. Here was a young woman who’d gone through a traumatic ordeal, who felt afraid of being injured by a bad date, enough to jump out of a moving car. Some folks would’ve given her free cab ride, and I didn’t expect to get paid. Yet her word was her bond, and she made good on it. Over 27 years, I’ve gotten stiffed by con artists, young punks, lawyers, registered nurses, financial tycoons and even a standing judge. I’ve had to fend off a couple of attempted robberies. But I’ve never gotten the run-around from hookers. If they can’t pay the fare they’ll tell you upfront.
# A serial killer stalked Vancouver during the last decades of the 20th-century. He owned a pig farm east of the city. He murdered more than fifty young women, many of whom were runaways from dysfunctional families; many were zonked on drugs of one sort or another. They may’ve taken a few wrong turns, but they were human beings, just trying to survive. The pig farmer found a novel way to dispose of his victims. He’d grind them up with his fodder and feed the mix to his pigs. It made DNA retrieval difficult if not impossible, so the world may never know how many young women he murdered.
# In a small way, I wanted to pay homage to the young women who service the sex trade, and especially to the victims of the pig farmer. The main character of “Loose Threads” is Nyssa Persson who spent three years under the thumb of a Tokyo pimp. Nyssa has a feisty nature which is composite of several women I’ve known, including my late wife.
# The narrative isn’t about the sex trade; it’s about adjusting to life after rescue where Nyssa is freed from the masquerades of the sex trade. She faces the same dilemmas that brave soldiers face as they return from the battlefields of Afghanistan. It’s not easy to shift from the insanity of war to the petty quietude of normal society. Adrenalin-charged flashbacks of lethal dangers don’t vanish overnight. Nor is it easy to switch from a serflike regimen to an informal society offering untold freedoms.
# Nyssa learns it’s possible to thrive a society without adverts, without income inequity, without politicians, without bureaucratic snarls of rules and regulations. However, she also learns that utopia comes with a price.

Markie Madden was born August 19, 1975, in Midland, Texas. She grew up in the small town of Flushing, Michigan. While in high school, she took creative writing and was a photographer for the school newspaper. In 1993, she won the National Quill and Scroll Society award for best photo in a high school paper. She began writing her first novel, Once Upon a Western Way, while still attending school.
Markie is now married with two teenage daughters, three rescue dogs, and her horse, Athena, who is featured on the cover of her horse care guide, Keeping a Backyard Horse. She tried many times over the years to publish her novel, first on her own, and then hiring a literary agent, all without success. In early 2012, after getting her first smart phone and e-reader application, Nook, she discovered the world of self-publishing through a website called Smashwords. Lauren Torres finds out that she was taken as a baby to be given to another family, the Torres. Her real name is Lauren Henderson, and her real parents live in Wyoming. She meets two ladies, Ms. Craft and Mrs. Thompson, who tell her about the Hendersons, and take her to their home.
While staying at her new home with the Hendersons, she goes to school and meets Mason Blair. At first, they can’t stand each other. However, slowly they become friends since they both get to play the lead roles in the school drama. After a while, they fall in love with each other.
Another student, John Parker, wants Lauren for himself. John tries to get Lauren, but Mason stops him before it goes too far. John comes up with a plan to kill Mason, and kidnap Lauren for a few days. But Lauren realizes the plan and calls for help. Two detectives, Lang and Richard, come in to help Lauren not to fall for her stalker’s plan, and try to catch John Parker in the criminal act. John hires a hit man named Mr. Husk to kill Mason, but he gets arrested after he shoots Mason and his father. Both Mason and his father wore protective gear on the day of the shooting, and survive. Mr. Husk makes a confession about John’s intentions and hands over recordings of his conversations with John.
John has his guardian, Mr. Wolf, go get Lauren from her home, and bring her to a warehouse. While at the warehouse, Mr. Wolf finds out that Lauren is the baby that he gave away to the Torres years ago. Lauren and Mr. Wolf become friends, and Mr. Wolf gives Lauren papers just in case something happens to him.
Mr. and Mrs. Henderson call the detectives to get Lauren back from John’s hands. They come up with a plan to get John and Mr. Wolf to the police station, and get a warrant to look in and around John’s property. Once that happens, Mr. Wolf goes back to hide, but eventually breaks down. He tells the detectives where to find Lauren, and the reasons why John did what he did. Mr. Wolf and John Parker are arrested, and soon the trial starts. During the trial, John’s lawyer is unable to prove his client’s innocence. Mr. Wolf has a heart attack on the witness stand and appears to die. During this time, Lauren and Mason’s relationship is on the rocks due to Mason’s greed for attention. The jury convicts John Parker of the crime, and he is sentenced to prison for life. Mr. Wolf faked his own death to watch Lauren from a distance.
Lauren and Mason move on with their life.
