Bertrand J. Adams Sr. Tlingit name is Kadashan, who was named after his great grandfather, John Kadashan, from Wrangell Alaska. He was educated at Sheldon Jackson college and Brigham Young University. While at Sheldon Jackson he began writing short stories with the mentorship of his creative writing instructor. In one semester he wrote about a dozen short stories and when he finished Sheldon Jackson, he pursued other interests until his writing ambition was renewed when he attended Brigham Young. Now an then he would take out his stories and rewrite, however he never finished them until he was encouraged by his former teacher to try and find a publisher. His rejection slips began to get as thick as his manuscripts. One day he was thumbing through some magazines at a news stand and saw this magazine that had the photo of a Tlingit woman wearing her regalia on the cover. He called her and she said she was interested in seeing some of his work. He packaged all his stories and mailed them to her. Immediately she began to use his stories and water color paintings. It took him over twenty years, but now he was beginning to be read. He researched self-publishing and over a period of time, and hard work, he published four books and is presently working on two more.
Kadashan is a retired commercial fisherman and lives in Yakutat with his wife and near his family and grandchildren.

Eventually both Yanceys and their guide stumble across the cabin where Liz has been stashed. Surprisingly, she behaves more like a good friend than a captive, and the Marshals are taken aback by her congenial attitude toward the outlaw.
Thomas is also handily smitten with the beauteous and quite capable Elizabeth Drayton. Plans are made to return her to her home, and Win Carpenter to the nearest authorities, when a crisis intercedes and circumstances change. Thomas’ plans are thrown completely out of kilter.
Battles and bloodshed and a welter of human emotion lead up the mountain and back down again.

I got my first taste of publication in first grade, when my essay on Airplane II: The Sequel appeared of my elementary school’s Creative Courier.
Seriously.
Questionable parental movie supervision notwithstanding, seeing something I had written in print was invigorating. So after spending my formative years running around a small town in rural Iowa, I enrolled in the University of Iowa and eventually picked up degrees in Journalism and Communication Studies. During that time I also spent three years writing for the Daily Iowan.
After graduation crossed over to the media relations world in the University of Iowa Sports Information Department, where I spent nine years on the road, running stats and frantically writing postgame stories before the team bus left.
I only got left behind once.
Marriage and a baby made road trips an impossibility, so I thought the life of a stay-at-home dad would be the perfect way to finally write that novel that had been bouncing around my head for years.
How cute is that?
Needless to say, caring for a 6-month-old leaves precious little time to breathe, let alone write. I was barely able to keep up with the fake blog I decided to make for her at 3 a.m. the day she was born.
But despite being parented by me, the kid got older and my novel idea poked its head out from under an avalanche of dirty diapers. I was ready to start writing.
Just in time to find out we were having another kid.
This time I knew what I was getting into, however, and I hustled to get whatever I could down before the next avalanche arrived. It was about 14,000 words, and it wasn’t good, but it was the seed from which A Necessary Act grew.
That was six years, six drafts and a move to Minnesota ago. There were plenty of detours along the way, including a stint writing opinion pieces as a member of the Rochester Post-Bulletin’s Editorial Advisory Board, but I finally got the book done.
I can’t say if it’s good or not—that’s your job—but it’s full of the things I like. Creepy bad guys, twists and bad decisions made for good reasons. I hope you like it.

A Journey to Becoming a Writer
At sixteen years old, during the summer of my Junior/Senior year in high school,
I had to operate my father’s automobile, service station and support our five-person family. My mother stayed home to raise the kids. Lesson: Accepting responsibility for oneself and your family.
When school began in the fall, I attended classes in the morning and then went to the station and worked it until 9:00 PM. On Saturdays, I worked from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM. I didn’t think about what I was missing in school. I still have no remorse. Lesson: Making sacrifices and expecting nothing in return.
My father finally recuperated from his heart attack and was able to return to work the summer I graduated from high school. I then offed to college, paying my own way by working in a commercial bakery. Lesson: Being independent and self sufficient.
Oh, writing. I remember my mother sitting at the kitchen table banging away at her old, Underwood typewriter while I raced around the table on my tricycle. Every other week, we would hop in the car and drive to Ballston Spa to visit with my mother’s high school English teacher. They would talk about writing, and her teacher would critique my mother’s essays and articles. Lesson: Accepting criticism, growing, and persisting.
I guess, subconsciously, I was being groomed to be a writer.
