Q – So, what makes the Inspector David Graham series special?
A – When I set out to write these books, I wanted to create something that played like a movie in the reader’s mind. They are books with action, but also soul. They are ensemble pieces containing regular characters that are well drawn with strong personalities, humor and some tragedy. The Inspector David Graham books feel, to me, like good friends that never let me down. Every time we sit down to plan the books, I love to find out what the characters are going to get up to next!
The Inspector David Graham books are a great mix of genres. They sit firmly in the cozy mystery category and are set on the beautiful island of Jersey in the English Channel between Britain and France. They feature a British detective who is part-Sherlock Holmes, part-Poirot, and, of course, uniquely himself.
Q – In what order should I read the books?
A – The Inspector David Graham cozy mysteries can be read, and enjoyed, in any order. The Case of the Hidden Flame is the second book in the series and is set on Jersey just as Inspector Graham takes up his new post. All the books are complete mysteries.
There is a prequel, The Case of the Screaming Beauty, that provides background to the series but I’ve made sure not to include any spoilers for those who are new to the characters and any existing fans of Graham’s adventures will still find plenty of fresh action and mystery as well as perhaps a few answers in it. All in all, there is something for everyone.
If you do want to read them in order, I’d suggest the following sequence:
– The Case of the Screaming Beauty (prequel)
– The Case of the Hidden Flame
– The Case of the Fallen Hero
Q – Why should readers give these books a try?
A – Because the Inspector Graham series is a gentle, but colorful romp through the wealthy but isolated English island, a place that is picturesque and peaceful but one filled with amoral and snobbish eccentrics with all kinds of vices.
Graham is a complex character who is intriguing from the get-go and yet evolves throughout the series while his sidekicks are worthy, interesting characters in their own right. We feature many English countryside rituals, institutions and customs in these stories.

We all keep things for different reasons. Some collect things for sentimental reasons, while others do it because they honestly believe that they’ll have a need for it in the future. Whatever your specific reason may be, collecting things you don’t need may be affecting your brain in ways you’re simply not aware of. Just recently, scientists from Yale were able to identify two areas in the brain that are directly affected by clutter. When asked to let go of items that the participants felt a connection to, the cingulated cortex and insula areas lit up. These areas of the brain, which are primarily associated with pain, are the same areas that light up when a person feel physical pain. Your brain processes a paper cut the same way that it processes losing a valued possession. To you, they may feel like two completely different things, but to the brain, one is just as painful as the other.
Studies show that the more emotionally or financially committed you are to something, the more you want to have it around. And getting rid of it might just be as painful as that burn you get when you drink your coffee too hot. Even if you’re not the sentimental type, your brain tends to place value on things as soon as they get introduced to your life. It’s this psychological effect that makes it difficult for any of us to get rid of things. This tendency to hoard items eventually leads to the unmanageable clutter that we experience in our lives, at one point or another.
Whether the clutter is hidden away in your closet, or laid out in the open on your office desk, it can have a negative effect on your brain. You may not be aware of it at the moment, but the longer you allow clutter to take over your life, the harder it will be for your brain to function at its optimal level. Your brain already goes through enough stress focusing and processing information by the millisecond, it can do away with dealing with clutter. Studies show that physical clutter not only competes for your attention, but it also decreases brain performance. The same way that multitasking takes a toll on your overall wellbeing, clutter can affect how your brain performs throughout the day.

Author Bio:
Berk Rourke was born in Douglas, Arizona on August 28, 1938. His careers were in teaching 8th and 9th grade students initially and then as an attorney for a total of some 40 years. He began writing as a cathartic exercise and enjoyed it so much that he continued with multiple efforts now being published for the first time. His life has known very few limits and his writing in at least three genres has not known limits yet.
Life activities include military service as a teen and younger man, college/university shortened by economic necessities in the first instance, filling out the requirements of a M.A. in Arts to enhance salary levels, all in night school, and law school for three years, followed by the bar exam in the state of Arizona, licensing in the Federal court system in the District Court of Arizona, the 9th Circuit Court and the United States Supreme Court.
A brief description of life shows a warrior, a teacher, a warrior of the word, and a writer. Married more than once, currently unmarried, still writing at age 77 with several more books awaiting publishing.
About Salem’s Daughters:
Following the loss of their promising careers, Bob and Debbie Stevens embark upon opening a bed and breakfast. Their savings depleted and desperate for cash, Bob reluctantly allows Debbie’s meddling grandparents to co-sign a three million dollar loan. They purchase a burned down property on twenty five acres in scenic rural southern Michigan and builds Murcat Manor.
Rumors of curses and ghosts haunt the property’s reputation. But the history of two previous houses burning to the ground killing nineteen people do not deter Bob and Debbie from their dream: raising a family while earning a living with one of the few bed and breakfasts in the entire region.
During construction, the Stevens adopt thirteen kittens found in the rubble of the property. The cats are possessed by disembodied souls from daughters of witches put to death during the Salem Witch Trials. Each cat possesses a unique ability, and together they bring terror and death to the guests of Murcat Manor.
With each killing bringing more cancellations, Bob has to get creative. Burdened with massive debt, he devises inventive ways to allure new guests in order to keep up the payments. But the malevolent felines have five previous lives, spanning four centuries, of deviltry and murdering practice to draw on. Their vast experience now enhanced with the use of modern technology, they devise cagey ways to keep killing, including leaving evidence at the scene for detectives to believe Bob and Debbie are the perpetrators.
