When I was very young, I can vividly recall staring with fascination at the picture on the cover of a book my father was reading. I asked him what the book was about and he looked at me before saying “If you want to know what it’s about, then read it.” So I did.
That was the start of my fascination with books. While friends would be out playing football, I would be inside reading. I had discovered a rich and varied realm of imagination.
Since that very first book I have rarely stopped reading for pleasure, yet as I grew older I realised that I wanted to share my own worlds, my own imagined adventures. I wanted to write my own stories.
Which brings me to the present and my very first book, hopefully the first of many. I have always preferred Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror and I intend to take a look at these genres and more while I find my feet and learn more of the art of writing and telling a good story.

The protagonists are terse and single-minded, yet Quantaman’s world is so immersive and foreign that they don’t feel flat. The plot leaps about in time and between storylines, maintaining a dynamism that keeps a reader on his toes. There is much here that will likely enlist fans for further adventures set in this idiosyncratic universe.

Here are my thought processes and life experiences that’ve gone into the eBook “Loose Threads.”
# I drove a taxi in Vancouver, BC for 27 years. The night shift began in midafternoon and ended in the wee hours of the morning. I’d wrestle the rush-hour traffic to get folks from point A to point B.
# As the night deepened the traffic thinned. My customers forgot about day jobs and turned their minds to recreational frills. They looked forward to “live” concerts, laughing with friends, candlelight dinners or getting high as kites. Some folks would swear they had a wonderful weekend, even when they couldn’t recall a thing. After midnight the odd loser would fall asleep or even get belligerent.
# Luckily I was never seriously injured from psycho customers or errant vehicles, considering the number of times my cab was totaled by drunk or berserk drivers.
# Ladies of the night taught me the shortcuts and back-alley routes. Their motives were to save money on the meter. I gained more over the long run since I earned the fine points that made me a better cabdriver.
# Hookers were honest to a fault. They didn’t always tell the whole truth, but they didn’t outright lie. They couldn’t afford to, because they worked in a graymarket that society keeps “under the rug.” Without standard price tags or government seals of approval, hookers have only themselves to trade.
# One night I drove across Vancouver’s busiest bridge. I trailed the car ahead. Its brake lights flashed. The passenger door opened and out tumbled a body. The driver slowed but never stopped. After two somersaults, the body stood up and waved frantically. I pulled to stop and learned she was a hooker on a bad date with no money. She begged me to take her to an apartment where she promised I’d get paid. When we arrived at the place, it turned out her boyfriend was out, but she got the apartment manager to fork out the cab fare.
# Here was a young woman who’d gone through a traumatic ordeal, who feared getting molested by a bad date, enough to jump out of a moving car. Some folks would’ve given her free cab ride, and I didn’t expect to get paid. Yet her word was her bond, and she made good on it.
# I’ve gotten stiffed by con artists, young punks, lawyers, registered nurses, financial tycoons, even a standing judge. I’ve had to fend off a few attempted robberies. But I’ve never gotten the run-around from hookers. If they couldn’t pay the fare they told you upfront.
# “Loose Threads” is my way to salute the young women who service the sex trade. The main character is Nyssa Persson who got caught under the thumb of a Tokyo pimp.
# The narrative doesn’t linger over the sex trade. The story covers the aftermath where Nyssa must adjust to new freedoms and challenges. She faces same problems that soldiers face as they return from the battlefields. They must forget wartime madness and resume the petty routines of normal society. All the while lethal flashbacks plague them like stalking ghosts. Nyssa must go from a serflike regimen to an informal society with unfamiliar choices.
# Nyssa finds it’s possible to thrive in a society without adverts, without income inequity, without politicians, without bureaucratic rules and regulations. However, she also learns that utopia comes with a price.

Born in 1954, I work from 1978 until 2015 as dispatcher at the E.R. of the University Clinic Gasthuisberg in Leuven, Belgium.
Around forty, I started a 4 year training in photography at the Arts Academy of Leuven and worked for about 13 years as a freelance photojournalist, focusing on Women-, LGTB-, Third World-, Ecological- and Peace Movements.
In 2010 I was honored in Belgium as Peace Woman.
Since 2008 I stay 3 to 4 months a year in Quebec. Once I arrived in Canada I (how could it be otherwise) became an enthusiastic nature photographer.
For 7 years, I have observed groundhogs waking up after hibernation and I established a big photo bank. And so my first book was born.

Mobile phones have become a ubiquitous distraction during movies and plays. Until recently I became wrathful whenever I heard one ring during a movie or stage play: I thought it my job as an audience member to focus intensively on any piece of art so that I can become a better citizen. But, after I did some research and had an experience while traveling, I’ve since changed my mind:
For a healthy society, we need two things: the forming of opinions and modeling social consent. To have a commonwealth, we have to agree to the terms of the contract as well as opine about which direction we should all go. The way we currently watch movies and plays–silently and in the dark–does not allow us to model social consent.
To model consent, we must turn up the houselights. In an indirect way, social media has started this trend by giving us a way to watch the audience as it reacts to an event, but we could help the trend along by turning up the lights and, each one of us, speaking up, reasoning together, and challenging ourselves to reason and reason well. I outline in this essay how Wagner’s opera aesthetic shaped how we currently watch movies and plays: silently in the dark. I draw upon some opera history to explain how in the more distant past, audiences participated socially in much the same way we do now when we #hatewatch a show.
While we might not want to literally turn up the houselights, with the advent of mobile internet, they already are up and we all can either let the cat calls from the Twitter pit continue, or we can all participate in the conversation. Whatever we decide, the days of sitting silently and in the dark–the days of Wagner–are over.

Sam Cairns started writing to alleviate boredom after an accident down the pit. Unable to work for a couple of months he picked up a pen and wrote what was going to be the next and quickest best-seller. Instant fame did not happen so he went back underground.
