Canada is the second largest country in the world, and its population exceeds 34 million people. Cross border trade between the U.S. and Canada exceeds $700 billion, annually. The country possesses a vast array of natural resources, and its Gross Domestic Product, (GDP), is approaching $2 trillion. Canada possesses the third largest oil reserves, globally, behind Saudi Arabia, and Venezuela. The country also has one of the strongest banking sectors, globally, as many of its largest banks have very high tier 1 capital ratio’s, and its banks had no exposure to the mortgage fiasco, during the global financial crisis. Canada produces over 3 million barrels per day, of crude oil, and oil sands production accounts for more than 50 percent of the total. The U.S. imports the largest quantities of crude oil and refined products, from Canada, which total more than 3 million barrels per day, (bpd).
Canada has been the subject of much controversy, in recent years. Canada’s Keystone XL pipeline, was one of the most contested political issues, which lasted for 7 years, and was ultimately rejected by President Obama. Keystone XL would have provided greater energy security to the U.S., by reducing its crude oil imports from Middle Eastern producers.
In addition, environmentalists label Canada’s vast oil sands as the “tar sands”. As a point of clarification, there is no “tar” in Canada’s oil. Canada’s oil sands are comprised of bitumen. Bitumen contains a mixture of sand, oil, clay, and water, which has a high viscosity, and a higher degree of sulfur. Canada’s vast oil sands region is estimated to contain over 170 billion barrels of bitumen.
Canada is in the process of approving several major pipelines, which will allow the country to export its large quantities of crude oil supplies to international markets. They include: Energy East, Northern Gateway, and the Trans Mountain expansion. Ultimately, Canada will be able to work with all of its various constituencies to construct the pipelines, which will help Canada Emerge As An Energy Superpower.

In the 25th century, a temporal viewer has been invented. The classical historian, Pallas Athene, has learned how to send messages to the past; she has helped Homer rewrite his stories, and has inserted herself as a Goddess. Then a technician tries the equipment and somehow whatever he did leads to the end of humanity in the past, other than those in the temporal satellite. The only way humanity can be saved is, thanks to relativity, to send someone from the first century to get alien help. The required space ship can be arranged, if the messenger is abducted, but the problem then is to prepare messenger to be of sufficient interest to aliens. Athene decides the messenger must do even more than what Galileo did.
The family of a young Claudian named Gaius is summoned to Capri, where Gaius meets the two future Emperors Gaius and Claudius, and he is summoned before Tiberius, who gives him the cognomen Scaevola (because he is left-handed) and sends him to Rhodes to learn from his slave Timothy. Following that, he is promised a legionary position. When there, Athene sends him a message. He must prove the earth goes around the sun, he must try to build a steam engine, and he must learn the art of war, and she gives him some cryptic clues as to what to do in certain circumstances.
Scaevola has learned about the heliocentric theory of Aristarchus, but Timothy shows him that Aristotle had proven that is impossible. However, Scaevola has been told by a Goddess to prove it, so it must be possible, except he cannot see how. Timothy and Scaevola go to Egypt, and see the steam engine that will eventually be in the Library of Alexandria. Scaevola also sees the corruptness of the local Governor. Tiberius dies, and Caligulae (he has two feet!) starts his bizarre imperium.
Eventually Scaevola is instructed to arrest the Governor Flaccus, and when he does, and thanks to a suggestion from Athene proves the corruptness, he is appointed Tribunus laticlavius to the Fulminata in Damascus, where he has to somehow survive a drunken Legatus, win a number of battles, deal with emerging Christianity, and finally help save Judea from the imposition of a statue of Caligulae into the temple of Jerusalem.
The book aims to be historically accurate (except where it is clearly fictional) and the resolution of the temple issue is only a slightly dramatized version of what is recorded by Philo of Alexandria. The novel is the first of a trilogy but it does have an ending where the reader could stop, provided they did not want to know how the major problem ends.

I write science-fiction type novels, many of which could also be described as thrillers, and they tend to reflect my unusual background. I am a semi-retired professional scientist (a chemist), and I am concerned that many people seem to think we must flee from science. We cannot. Society now would collapse but for the advances of science, and there are a large number of issues coming in the future, such as climate change, energy, materials shortages, and so on. We can deal with these, but only if we do so properly. Some of my novels include some of these problems, and while some may think I exaggerate them (I do) it does not hurt in fiction to have a really bad problem, and it does not hurt for it to be sufficiently bad to wake people up. The science in my science fiction novels is designed to show how science works, in the hope that it will help people evaluate “science” spoken by influential people.
I also own a private research company, which has led me to meet “important” people, including very senior politicians and business people. For a few years I was a Director on the Board of two ICI companies. This has given me an insight on how things get done, and the sort of people who do them. Most novels are based around “the ordinary person” but I have focused more on people in important positions..
I grew up in rural parts of New Zealand, and because those who lived there were strongly self-reliant, this has given me an independent look at life. I studied chemistry at the University of Canterbury, and in my first year I got into a challenge with some female arts students. My case was, they only study and criticize; scientists do stuff. This ended up with their saying I could not write a novel, so I went away, and over the summer vacation, I did. After three rejections (!) I gave up. (Little did I know three rejections were hardly getting started.) In 1968 I spent three days in Czechoslovakia, entering from Poland at the same time as the invasion, and some of that has given me experience for writing thrillers.
I now live in Lower Hutt, New Zealand, with my cat Horatio, my wife of 42 years having died recently. While I have largely worked in the private sector, I have still published 100 peer reviewed scientific papers, many of them single author papers. I have two projects continuing. One is the conversion of biomass to carbon for a company called Carbonscape; the other involves seaweed-based cosmetic skin gels under the brand name Nemidon. I have written four scientific books and ten novels, details of which are on my website.

Darren Lewis was born in Cardiff in 1975 and now lives with his family in Norfolk. Although an avid reader of many genres it wasn’t until his daughter, Ellie aged 6, asked for a story of her own that inspired him to put pen to paper.

Between the ages of eighteen and twenty one, Mel works as a chef in a mental institute, loses his dad, meets a single mum with schizophrenia and marries her. Over a decade, he suffers the wrath of a green-eyed monster, namely, her jealousy. They are tough times.

I am that “Ordinary Guy” the youngest of seven siblings, yes I was the baby of the family. The spoilt one.
I grew up on a council housing estate during the 70’s where I was educated at state run junior and secondary schools. It was here that I entered and won a Poetry competition for a National Newspaper. From there I went directly to work through a Youth Opportunity Scheme or YTS if anyone remembers it, so no university for me.
At the tender age of Twenty-One I entered into my first marriage. She was a single mum of one child with one on the way and over the years we added three more children to the mix. Sadly she was diagnosed as schizophrenic, which made life tough but we got through ten years together. It was during those years that I first attempted to write my Memoirs, but only got as far as the first paragraph. This was picked up again in 2012 after my second marriage ended, but not after we brought another beautiful child into the world and had a close call with death due to septicaemia. I then finished my story and Self Published it in 2015.
Since then I found my true love for writing and have now written a time travel adventure and a children’s picture book (both yet to be published.)
My currently writing’s include a thriller based on the migrant crisis, an innuendo fueled comical fiction and some poetry, of which I am thinking of transforming my Memoirs into verse.
I am proud to say that I self taught in all I do, which includes another love of mine, photography.

Hello!
I was an Army Reservist for 10 years. Loved the work, loved the people, and loved the experience. For my sins, I was selected to be a part of an Artillery Battery unit in Sydney. Over the ten year span I was involved in a whole range of duties. From firing the 105mm Howitzer, to being a Radio Operator in the Battery’s Command Post and finally, to being someone who could observe targets in the far distance and be the one to authorize Artillery fire onto them. It’s an experience one can never forget.
A few years after enlisting I began to get cold feet. I wanted a different kind of adventure, and one that was built on two simple principles. Firstly, I wanted to go overseas – anywhere! It didn’t matter. Secondly, and most importantly, I didn’t want to pay a cent for it! That opportunity came to me in the spring of 2007. I was fortunate enough to be selected for an overseas posting to the Solomon Islands as a radio operator for six months.
The best part of it was, as an Australian soldier, I was attached to the Papua New Guinea Army. Now…. Being immersed in a culture that ‘do things’ very differently was both a shock and a rewarding time. I would teach them how to use a computer, GPS and use basic radio systems. In return they would teach me all kinds of bush tricks. Everything from creating fire from rubbing sticks, weaving baskets using thick grass and simply how to survive in the jungle. I kept a daily diary of my experiences as a momento kind of thing.
But after I came back to Australia, I starting thinking….. Maybe I could write a book about it? My grammar was (still is) terrible but over a 7 year period I slowly began to transform my experience onto paper. I would dabble here and there, scribble people’s names on the photos I kept. It took a long time of cutting and editing, but I finally managed to scrounge up a story to share.
Looking back, the Army Reserves really helped mold my attitude and full-time career.
Firstly, for me, I found that I had greater favor with employers when they noted my reserve experience on the Resumes. It was simply a case of ‘We want people who aren’t afraid to get out of the office and get their hands dirty’. In fact, my current employer was once a reservist himself! The 45 minute interview instantly became an exchange of ‘Weekend Warrior’ stories and laughs.
Secondly, the Army Reserve wasn’t just a Part-Time job to me. It was also a family. We were brothers. If someone needed a pat on the back, we were there. If someone needed a few bob to get themselves out of a pickle, no one needed to ask. It’s simply a great community to be involved with.
Finally, if you are the fortunate soul to pick this book up. I encourage you to flip through the pages and see if this lifestyle is for you. I hope that these stories will encourage more people to consider the possibility of enlisting. I feel that a lot of people still think that you have to be a fitness freak with a cold attitude to even be considered, and yet, as you will no doubt be able to tell from reading my stories, I am a little eccentric who panics too quickly. Despite this, there was still a job for me. A job that took me all over the east coast of Australia and overseas. Not to mention there are a few shiny medals in my display cabinet that I like to look at now and then.
Also for those who were former members of the Reserves or CMF, if any of you have a story to share, I am very keen to hear it.
The concept behind this book was for others to come forward with their own records and put them on paper. Ideally, I want to have a series similar to Footrot Flats, with a few added illustrations for a bit of hearty entertainment.

Q – So, what makes the Remembering Raven series special?
A – It’s a mixture of things, actually. When I started writing these books, I wanted to create a series of books that I would love to read. I love paranormal romances and vampire love stories, but I also love books with some action and a strong female character. I tried to roll of these interests into one series.
The Remembering Raven books are a mix of romance, sex, longing, occult, and mystery. I also tried to create some really memorable supporting characters too, that I hope readers will enjoy.
