What is my year over year profit?
Are there any differences in the demographics between the people who are buying product X and product Y?

What are the seasonal trends in our industry?
I’m an engineer, so I probably haven’t even thought of all the questions you’ve already had for years! But I guarantee you, knowing SQL will help you answer these questions.
On various teams I’ve worked on in the tech world – I’ve noticed that marketing people and product managers have SQL skills and sometimes even coding skills! So if you are looking to not only make your day more productive, but make yourself more marketable to employers and catch up to the other go-getters in your field – then you should most definitely learn SQL.

Laurence A. St. John was born on January 11, 1965 in Toledo Ohio. Laurence has one older brother and two younger sisters. Laurence along with his parents, brother and sisters moved once while growing up to Genoa Ohio, just south of Toledo. While attending Genoa Area schools, he was active in track, football and baseball. Later, after he graduated from Genoa High School (Comets) in 1983, he worked for a few manufacturing companies.
At the age of 23 and after three years of dedication, hard work and sweat, in 1988, Laurence received his first-degree black belt (Shodan) in Tae Kwon Do. This gave him the self-confidence and perseverance needed to surmount anything that came his way.
When Laurence was 25 years old he fell in love then married the love of his life, Julie in 1990. He then adopted her two young wonderful children Joe and Jan shortly after.
Out of high school for nearly fifteen years and after persuaded by his former manager, Laurence attended Owens State Community College where he obtained an Associates Degree in Microcomputer Business Systems while working full-time. In addition to computer classes, he enjoyed composition classes where he could free his mind and write what he wanted.
While working in the steel processing business for almost fifteen years, Laurence’s place of employment changed hands, for the third time in 2006; fighting for his job, again. In the same year his first granddaughter, Kendall, “Papa’s Angel” was born. He described this as one of the most uplifting moments of his life. In addition, it was during this time when his emotions were running wild; he became inspired as well as determined to write his penned-up thoughts on paper.
Nearly four years later, he had completed his first middle grade/teen fantasy/sci-fi novel, Metatron: The Angel Has Risen. In addition his second novel, Metatron: The Mystical Blade, was published in August 2014. The next Metatron novels in the series are projected to be published in 2016 and 2018.
Laurence currently lives in Northwood Ohio with his wife of 26 years, Julie. His son Joe is married to Cari and they have three daughters, Kendall, Sadie and Harper. His daughter Jan is married to Andrew and they have a son Eli and a daughter Evelyn. Laurence currently holds the position of Administrations Manager at Precision Strip, Inc. in Perrysburg Ohio, where he works full time. Believe the hype. Deep learning is making waves. At the time of this writing (March 2016), Google’s AlghaGo program just beat 9-dan professional Go player Lee Sedol at the game of Go, a Chinese board game.
Experts in the field of Artificial Intelligence thought we were 10 years away from achieving a victory against a top professional Go player, but progress seems to have accelerated!
While deep learning is a complex subject, it is not any more difficult to learn than any other machine learning algorithm. I wrote this book to introduce you to the prerequisites of neural networks, so that learning about neural networks in the future will seem like a natural extension of these topics. You will get along fine with undergraduate-level math and programming skill.
All the materials in this book can be downloaded and installed for free. We will use the Python programming language, along with the numerical computing library Numpy.
Unlike other machine learning algorithms, deep learning is particularly powerful because it automatically learns features. That means you don’t need to spend your time trying to come up with and test “kernels” or “interaction effects” – something only statisticians love to do. Instead, we will eventually let the neural network learn these things for us. Each layer of the neural network is made up of logistic regression units.
Do you want a gentle introduction to this “dark art”, with practical code examples that you can try right away and apply to your own data? Then this book is for you.
This book was designed to contain all the prerequisite information you need for my next book, Deep Learning in Python: Master Data Science and Machine Learning with Modern Neural Networks written in Python, Theano, and TensorFlow.
There are many techniques that you should be comfortable with before diving into deep learning. For example, the “backpropagation” algorithm is just gradient descent, which is the same technique that is used to solve logistic regression.
The error functions and output functions of a neural network are exactly the same as those used in linear regression and logistic regression. The training process is nearly identical. Thus, learning about linear regression and logistic regression before you embark on your deep learning journey will make things much, much simpler for you.

What inspired Being Bad?
Jarrett: In Steinbeck’s novel East of Eden, about 3/4 through the book Cal decides he is just like Catherine (his mother) just bad or evil. After reading that It stuck with me. I would just think about Cal. I would also see a lot of people on T.V. and some around me making bad choices and making excuses. I sat down and wrote the words: He’s a bad mother fucker. A few weeks later I had Being Bad.
You mentioned Steinbeck does he influence your writing?
Jarrett: Anything you read influences your writing. The stuff I really like influences it more than the stuff I don’t like, but it all influences the way I write. If I hate almost everything another author does I may still find one thing I like. I also learn a bunch of what not to do.
Who are your favorite authors?
Classics: Steinbeck, Faulkner, Jack London. I think it is important to read classics. I also like Charles Bukowski and the famous beat author Jack Kerouac.
I like Elmore Leonard and Stephen King they should both probably be considered classics already. Dennis Lehanne is my other favorite.
What about you? Do you like to read your own work?
Jarrett: Yes. Usually I remember writing it thinking it was going to turn out totally different.
Do you have others you are going to self publish?
Jarrett: Yes. I enter most of my stories into national and international writing contest. The majority of these contest require that the story has never been published (including self published).
