The high-level political candidates, and the ones already elected, were the easiest to
spot on the island as they zoomed along the peaceful streets in their spandex bicycle
shorts with their famous faces hidden under their protective helmets. Their blood lines
were impeccable; bestowing upon them their perfect hair and dashing good looks.
Brandishing their gold star wives, and scrubbed spot-free backgrounds, it would seem
that these individuals were intentionally superficial; almost as if they were created or
molded by an outside entity. And in return for their good fortune, they were consistent
in paying homage to the club’s enigmatic founder. His dark prophecies structured their

no means, was there ever to be a struggle to just merely exist…
Now it was already mid-January. Kristen would have normally left for Florida by now
and would be lazing in the sun, instead of freezing. But this Season was different and
sadly she would not be included in the usual festivities. This was definitely not going to

and the others in her world. She truly cared more for others than herself. Whenever she
felt the need to put on airs, she quietly laughed within at the absurdity of it all. Social
status was an evil entity and it always presented a challenge not to be sucked into its
game. To her, money represented security, not greed. It was also a comfort food for the
love that was lacking in her life. Her parents were always too busy to give her the
attention that she longed for. And sometimes this manifested into her taking it out on
herself. But, despite any of her feelings about it, and at this time in her life, she still had
to go on with the charade; it was expected of her.
As soon as Kristen began her ascent to the next tier, she became less sure of her
footing. The wealthier men that she now encountered had more acquired tastes and a
higher threshold for excitement. She would either need to conform to meet their
demands or present a challenge in order to hold their interest.
And, if Kristen ever managed to regain her rightful position on her beloved island
again, it was inevitable that she would eventually meet up with someone from the
Whitestone clan. She was already in their sights, but was not perceived to be quite ready
yet. Her progression was being carefully tracked and it would be only a matter of time
before she was called forth. In the meanwhile, she had many frogs to kiss and needed to

I wrote my first story when my little boy wanted a bike for Christmas one year, and it was out of the question for us to give him one at the time. Looking at the knitted toys his grandmother always made for him, I devised a story whereby each of his knitted toys had a specific magic power. In the tale, the previously ridiculed knitted toys became more favourable to his friends than their own bikes, and they all wanted magic, knitted toys too. I ended up splitting the story up and making it into a series. I’ve never published those, but started writing regularly then. My son looked at his knitted toys with a new respect after I’d read him the stories.
‘Tissue of Lies’ is my first self published book. My second published book is co-authored with another author I met Online by chance. I’d written a short story about a murder victim and put it on my website. Doug Lafuze saw it and was inspired to write the same story from the killers angle. I liked it and suggested we write a book together based on what we’d already written. Only eight weeks later we had the first draft of our book. This was no mean feat considering Doug lives in Nebraska, USA, and I live in Lancashire, England. It took another eight months and many edits and improvements before we had our polished book, ‘Your Last Breath’. It was a wonderful experience working with another author and bouncing ideas around. I would recommend it.

The idea for this novel came from a real-life wild bird care center that I worked in for several years. It was run by a kind-hearted family who took in any bird (and animal) that people found on the streets—and, wow, they found a lot! Like Toni’s family, we cared for a one-legged goose, a hawk with a broken wing, sparrows, owls, baby pigeons, snakes, abandoned kittens and more. During the two years that I worked there, I lost dozens of cups of coffee because their caffeine-addicted parrot would perch on my cup as soon as my head was turned, and then would NOT let me have it back until he’d drunk it all or had tipped it over. Like Leona, I lost a pretty gold earring when their parrot decided it was a tick and chewed it off before I could stop him. I spent many lunches trying to keep my food away from their always-hungry Great Dane and, like Toni, I finally got used to opening up the big basement freezer and seeing bags of dead mice beside the ice cream! The one thing I never quite got used to? Being chased out of their bathroom every day by a very annoyed one-legged goose who was convinced that the tub was his (despite the fact that it was the only bathroom in the house, so we all had to use it!). Taking care of injured birds is a ton of work, but it was the most fun job I’ve ever had, and I learned more about wildlife than I could ever have imagined.
I had a blast writing this story and reliving all of those wonderful memories, and I’m glad I can now share them with fun-loving kids.
