“Donnie, I’m pregnant.” She said as she put the joint out in the ashtray on the floor. Donnie pulled the pipe away from his lips long enough to let the information sink in. He nodded at her and ran his fingers through his hair; pulled the pipe back to his lips and inhaled deeply. His eyes went mostly white as euphoria hit him and he let them roll back. That was all the acknowledgement she got the first time she told him. That night Donnie hit the pipe over and over again and Tina locked herself up in the bedroom. It was a long night and Tina felt all alone; a good thing considering what other nights had been like. After a night of tears in the bedroom it was time to get to work at the local Café. Donnie was passed out on the kitchen table alongside a spilt glass of red wine and some left overs. It looked like he had been stabbed. His friend Luke was snoring on the couch wearing nothing but boxer briefs and on the other end of the couch there was Lucy. Lucy was Luke’s toy; which he happily shared with anyone that would give him cash or share their drugs with him.
Tina pulled her hair up and slipped into her work outfit in the bathroom across the hall. It was a wonder she managed to hold on to her job. She was always late and even her thick layer of makeup could not hide the dark rings beneath her eyes most days. A hard worker though, anything was better than winding up like Lucy. The darkness that had surrounded her all her life made it hard to see how bad her situation was at the time. Donnie reminded her of her own dad before he died. Most people say her mother killed him. The shift was quiet, not too many clients and her boss Harry wasn’t in so she had not had any extra work to do. At the end of her shift she sat and had a cup of coffee with Tim her gay friend. They discussed the club scene and how well Donnie’s club was doing.
Donnie ran an underground after hour’s nightclub. Some nights though he was so far gone that he locked himself away in their apartment. The club was very popular with Tim’s crowd; the club accepted them at a period when many clubs did not. Past four AM no one really cared who or what you did. The drug scene was also quite heavy and Donnie made a cut from that to. Donnie never paid the rent on the apartment, nor the electric or anything to do with the place for that matter. The money goes back into the business. He would say at least once a day. So Tina worked at the diner, paid the bills and made ends meet.
Tina made her way back home after she finished her coffee and gave Tim a big hug goodbye. The late afternoon sun pelted down on her as she walked through the dusty streets. Their apartment wasn’t far from the Café. The street they lived on was made up of derelict blocks of apartments and closed down shops. The first time they went to the apartment she had felt a little scared; now though, it was home. The beggar on the corner, she knew by name. The pimps and thugs new she was Donnie’s girl and everyone either loved or feared Donnie. It was easy for her to adjust, she grew up in a similar neighborhood; she felt safe there also. Everyone knew her dad and no one would dare hurt her.
Donnie was waiting for her when she opened the door. She had barely walked in the door when Donnie grabbed her by the hair and practically flung her onto the couch. “Where the fuck where you? You should have finished an hour ago.” Donnie yelled as Tina pulled her knees up and wrapped her arms around them; burying her head into them. Tears streamed down her cheeks and her lips trembled but she could not form any words. Donnie paused for a moment and took a step back. “What’s wrong sweetie? I was just worried about you that’s all.” Tina slowly lifted her head cautiously; having learnt that Donnie seeming to calm down wasn’t always a good thing. “I had a coffee with Tim at work.” She said, her voice trembling. Donnie smiled. “How was work?” Donnie asked, seeming much calmer. “It was good. Do you remember what I told you yesterday?” Donnie seemed puzzled. “Nope.”
“I’m pregnant Donnie, we’re having a baby.” Donnie dropped on to the couch beside her, his head weighed down with thought.

The idea, in a nutshell, is that all of the particles in the universe are in motion and follow the laws of physics and so their positions are all predetermined from their previous state; hence the future is also determined from the position of all the particles in their present state, including everything down to the subatomic particles making up the synapses in your brain. The ultimate conclusion of this realization is that free will is an illusion — an elegant illusion. I come from Glasgow, Scotland, but these days I live down under in Melbourne, Oz.
For ten years, between 2001 and 2011, I was a session/touring musician, working throughout the UK and Ireland, playing bass and having fun. Sometimes I miss it.
In 2011, I retired from music (at the decrepit age of 33) and went back to school. I studied English Literature and History. I wrote short stories at the same time – bad ones. But I stuck with it.
I got my degree. And then I put it in a drawer somewhere (sock drawer I think). I was still writing – both fiction and by that point, sports features (mixed martial arts and boxing) for a variety of magazines and websites. It felt good to get paid.
In 2015, I moved to Australia. I put non-fiction aside and decided to become an indie author full-time. Fifty Shades of Grey has a lot to answer for.
So what do I write? Speculative Fiction. That is, Alternate Histories, Post-Apocalyptic and Horror stories. These are the genres I love. Although I do have ‘The Outsider Tales’ too, which is none of the above.
Now I’m writing a series in which ex-Beatle John Lennon is alive and well and wreaking havoc in a non-Beatle way. I’m also writing about a world in which the London riots of 2011 didn’t stop. Post-Apocalyptic shit.

When J. A. Cipriano was in second grade, his teacher gave everyone in class a journal to write down whatever they wanted. Their first subject was to write about something they didn’t like. J. A. chose to write about why he didn’t like writing. His reasoning was simple. He had bad handwriting. Even then, he was destined to be an engineer due to his messy scrawl.
Unfortunately, he found through the course of this little adventure that he actually liked writing. That year was sort of the high point for his writing career because he won a writing contest for the state. He got to go to a big dinner and his teacher was all dressed up.
He kept writing little stories, year after year, and in sixth grade, won another contest. In seventh grade, he broke his arm and got the cast signed by both Dean Koontz and Stan Lee. It is, by far, the coolest cast he’s owned. That was about the time he found video games and anime. His writing turned mostly toward fanfiction until about ninth grade when he wrote his first novel, a small book about twenty thousand words called Revelations. In sophomore year, he wrote two more books to complete the trilogy because he saw Star Wars that year and learned trilogies were the cool thing to do.
He rewrote Revelations during his senior year, and his wife swears it is the best thing he’s written. J.A. is not so sure. Every time he reads it, he cringes, but then again, he hates everything he writes, so there is that.
It was about that time, he got heavily involved in a fanfiction writing group, but that isn’t one hundred percent accurate. It was a world based on a popular anime but everything was created especially for this world. It made it so that every story someone wrote was unique.
Imagine writing a Star Wars novel set 1,000 years after A New Hope, where everything that happened was a distant memory and you get the idea. You have the force, some distant memories of the past, and that’s pretty much it.
He wrote about a million words (863K to be exact) for them before he decided to do his own thing. He wrote another novel. He put it in a drawer. He wrote another one that eventually became the basis for The Hatter is Mad. His next novel was Kill It With Magic, his first real novel. It’s not bad, but it’s bumpy. This is unfortunate because the books get loads better as the series progresses.
Since then, he’s written six more novels, four of which are in the Lillim Callina Series, and one in the Abby Banks series. The other is stuck in a drawer for time undetermined. He’s writing his next book now which is about werewolves fighting mummies in Ancient Egypt. After that, he will move onto Abby Banks 2. The Spy Within will come out in June or July.
J.A. also has three chinchillas. Two of them are grey, and because of this, they are named Slate and Cadmium. The third is named Jet because he’s black, and Jet is old English for black. See, creative. He also has a cat named Turtle. This does pose problems for his two-year-old from time to time.
