Driving at night for the first time can be a strange experience, more so if like me, you learned to drive during the summer when days were long, and your first night journey was made without anyone there to guide you.

Even after gaining experience, many drivers still go about in darkness as if the sun were shining; showing no regard for the extra demands that driving in the dark makes on us.

During the spring and summer months the weather is at worst wet and windy, but driving in winter can present a whole new set of problems. An inexperienced driver’s first encounter with the perils of driving in snow or icy conditions can be a daunting time. For those unprepared and lacking in the basic knowledge of how to cope with winter conditions the results can be deadly.

So here are a few rules and driving tips for new and seasoned motorists alike, to try and make night time and winter driving a more pleasant…and safer experience!

Hello everyone.

For as long as I can remember I’ve been a lover of books and literature. My passion for writing started at a very young age. I remember being a small child in junior school. I think I was in year five at the time which would have made me ten or possibly eleven. I wasn’t a disruptive child but I was lazy when it came to my school work. until one afternoon our teacher tasked us with writing a short story. He gave us a phrase which I think was something along the lines of “You’ve made your bed, now you must lie in it.” Ideas popped into my head and I started writing. I think I wrote more in that one lesson than I did the entire week. In the next lesson, we were informed that only one of us was getting full marks for their story. I was very surprised when the English teacher stood in front of my desk and told the class all about my short story. From then on I was hooked on writing and reading. Roald Dahl was my favorite at the time. Not long after that, Harry Potter. Then someone recommended The lord of the rings. As I grew older I discovered authors like Stephen King and James Herbert. I wanted to be just like them and create amazing stories that people would enjoy. The only obstacle in my way was my dyslexia. I have a problem getting my thoughts onto a page and even when I do I read through it and think to myself “That’s garbage, no ones going to want to read that.” I’m also not exactly an expert when it comes to the written language. My punctuation is something to be desired and I don’t always put my paragraphs in the right place. However, I write anyway. I write because I love creating stories and all I want to do is share them with people who are like me and enjoy reading. I’m looking forward to meeting and talking to all you fellow book worms out there.

Born and raised in Croatia, Domagoj Pernar was always a curious person. From his young days, he was interested in many different categories of prose and poetry. The colourful landscape is peppered with characters such as Zabbadoc the Wealthy, brother of Zebroc the not Quite so Wealthy, cousin to Hammal the Positively Stinking Rich; a desert nomad race to whom bartering is a not just a way of life, it’s a religion… and one which they fervently encourage others to join. Then there’s the forest dwelling Two-Feet tribe, a race whose pursuit of gastronomic perfection is only tempered by the limitation of the size their stomachs; and whose bible is a recipe book.

It is a book for those who like their humour ‘off the wall’ rather than off the peg. As Jonathan himself might say ‘It’s the kind of book you just can’t put down… it must be something to do with the chewing gum on the cover.’

Not content to stay at that level, he became a member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, passed the RoSPA police driving test at gold standard; and began to train company car drivers for the advanced tests.

Don then went on to become a driving examiner, a job which he did for many years before leaving to branch out on his own once again.

He now spends most of his time writing, using his extensive experience at all levels of driver training and testing to produce a series of books which will hopefully help him to pass on some of that knowledge to you.

The gold fog rolled and so did the water, foaming and frothing, revealing first the photonics mast and communications antennas, then The Sarpedon’s black, sea-slicked sail and forward fins, then its great, dark, parabolic bow—which breached the surface at an angle, like the plesiosaurs and ichthyosaurs and mosasaurs swimming alongside—until, still steaming forward, the ship was fully surfaced and its aft fins visible; at which three people—two men and a small woman with a bob haircut—appeared in the sail.

“Jesus,” gasped Puckett, the engineering chief, as he looked at the beasts, which filled the water for as far as the eye could see (which nonetheless wasn’t very far, due to the fog). “If I hadn’t seen it myself, I wouldn’t have believed it. The sonar doesn’t lie.”

Captain O’Neil was more circumspect. “But why, goddammit. That’s what I want to know. I’ve certainly never seen them migrate en masse like this—like Hammerhead sharks. What’s the reason?”

Both of them had to shout over the crash and commotion of the waves.

Pang signed excitedly at them as the wind chopped her hair.

“What’s she saying?”

Puckett, who’d been working with her, paraphrased: “She’s saying, ‘What if they were called too—only in a different way?’” He watched as she continued to sign. “‘Or—considering the dream used sound and imagery instead of words—the exact same way?’”

O’Neil looked at the marine animals as they leapt and dove and swam powerfully alongside. Aye, but for a different reason, he thought.

“Ho!” cried Chief Puckett suddenly. “The Santa Monica Pier!”

O’Neil peered into the fog and saw the tiny silhouette of a Ferris wheel emerging from the gloom, then unhooked his mic. “Half ahead, revolutions 500—and mind the beasties.” He looked at Pang. “Yes, I’m going to send a team ashore. And no, you’re not—”

And that’s when it happened: that’s when the pterodactyl flapped down like an oyster-white threshing machine and snatched her up by the shoulders—began rising. That’s when O’Neil drew his sidearm—even as Puckett grabbed her by the ankle—but couldn’t get a shot in through the pounding wings and Pang’s own flailing—until there was the briefest of openings, and he did fire.

Until he got lucky, and the bird fell and so did Pang—still being gripped by her ankle—so that she was flipped upside down and slammed against the sail—which her head hit like a rock. So that she was knocked unconscious even as Puckett and O’Neil held tightly and ultimately dragged her back into the conning tower.

After which, drearily—for they were unable to wake her or get any sort of reaction at all—there was nothing to do but take her to the infirmary and monitor her.

Nothing to do, frankly, but pray.
