In the spring of 2020, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis – an autoimmune disease when the immune system attacks joints. The cause is unknown, with no cure. After several tests and X-rays, the doctors offered me a standard treatment – immune suppressants. However, I refused to subject myself to what would accompany me for the rest of my life. Instead, I decided to heal myself by applying what I knew best – a design process. Through several feedback loops focusing on changes to my lifestyle and diet, I liberated myself from rheumatoid arthritis and nasty allergies I had suffered all my life.

After completing his double Master’s Degree from the State College of Fine Arts in Gdansk, Poland, Gregory Ronczewski moved with his wife to British Columbia, Canada, where he discovered interactive media or multimedia, as this emerging discipline was called back in 1994. His diverse talents led him to the Creative Director position at DNA—a Vancouver-based company whose pioneer work on educational CD-ROMS resulted in numerous awards and recognition worldwide.
Since his first website went live in 1995, Gregory has worked on many projects, from books and wine labels to posters and web interfaces. I want to acknowledge my thanks to my wife. I know it wasn’t easy for my wife to get up every morning and see me at my computer typing away. Not only that, but I recently retired and write, which is what I do all day into the night. It gives me great satisfaction. I know it sounds like I am diverting. Still, after 40 years of being a therapist working with dually diagnosed patients (Drug addicts and other psychological issues that mostly came from the Department of Corrections and the Federal system), I need to do what I always looked forward to doing with my remaining years, one day at a time.
I was the director of two main counties here in Florida. Both inpatient and outpatient. When the patients did well, I felt good. Many of them went on to a successful life, college, and families of their own. And many of them sadly died from this scourge of the disease of addiction.

Chris Towndrow has been a writer since 1991.
He began writing science fiction, inspired by Asimov, Iain M Banks, and numerous film and TV canons. After a few years creating screenplays across several genres, in 2004 he branched out into playwriting and has had several productions professionally performed. This background is instrumental in his ability to produce realistic, compelling dialogue in his books.
His first published novel was 2012’s space opera “Sacred Ground”. He then changed focus into “hard” sci-fi books, and the Enna Dacourt pentalogy was completed in 2023.
He has always drawn inspiration from the big screen, and 2019’s quirky romantic black comedy “Tow Away Zone” owes much to the film canon of the Coen Brothers. This has been his most well-received book to date, and spawned two sequels in what became the “Sunrise trilogy”.
His first historical fiction novel, “Signs Of Life”, was published by Valericain Press in 2023.

In the spring of 2020, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis – an autoimmune disease when the immune system attacks joints. The cause is unknown, with no cure. After several tests and X-rays, the doctors offered me a standard treatment – immune suppressants. However, I refused to subject myself to what would accompany me for the rest of my life. Instead, I decided to heal myself by applying what I knew best – a design process. Through several feedback loops focusing on changes to my lifestyle and diet, I liberated myself from rheumatoid arthritis and nasty allergies I had suffered all my life.

Preventing Her Shutdown is an inside look of what an ongoing caregiver spouse goes through in my desperate effort to keep my wife with Alzheimer’s “connected”. Very personal unloaded emotions are expressed and actions taken, never confided to anyone while slowly losing my wife.
She doesn’t speak at all. She expresses only some sounds and shows a lot of anxiety. This becomes a real challenge trying to figure out what she wants and how she feels. How do we communicate? How do I talk to her? How does she tell me what she wants or needs? We both had to learn how to interact and communicate with each other.
My desperation as a spouse caregiver is that we are constantly “connecting” as this alleviates my greatest fear of a “shutdown”. Detailed is how everyday, every moment I can, I try to create an opportunity to “connect”.

I am simply an ordinary “John Doe” caregiver, husband sharing my experiences living and caring for my wife with Alzheimer’s. We have been married 44 years, 3 kids now grown up, a great dog most of those years, a typical family on our own trying to hold on to my wife and avoid her shutdown. I began to realize there are probably other “amateur” caregivers like me on their own trying to take care of a loved one with the Alzheimer´s Disease and possibly could benefit from my shared personal experiences. Soon this diary turned into this book.
Writing not only “alleviated” my continuous sorrow but also indirectly helped me make personal decisions and changes in how to interact with her dramatic behavioral changes as her 24/7 caregiver. I am 73 years old and my wife is 71 and we are just trying to continue to grow old together as long as we can.
The Purpose of This Book:
This book started out as a daily diary noting my wife’s behavior and my reactions which not only helped me ventilate my sorrow but also how to react to her changes and her needs as her caregiver. The laptop screen became my “ghost friend”. Outside professional help just doesn’t work as there are no two behavioral reactions to Alzheimer´s exactly alike. Each person reacts differently to this disease which is why there isn’t an exact “to do list”. An outside professional also is of no help for the same reason. Every family attending their loved ones as caregivers are on their own. There isn’t a guide to follow.
How do I connect with my wife and get her to connect with me? This is always a constant desperation as her caregiver especially because she doesn’t speak. I am always afraid she will stop connecting with me, especially when I get that “blank lost look” which happens often. Described are the different things I do when that happens to get her to reconnect, sharing details of “what worked and what didn´t work for me.”
My Method for Writing:
I am always writing and taking notes in real time of her behaviors, daily events and my reactions. I take notes as things happen so I can easily remember how I felt and reacted. It’s easy to remember feelings in general terms such as happiness, sadness etc. but not the thought process in detail that went on during those emotions. This is why I am always writing “in real time”. Noting my reactions at the moment helps justify or correct my decisions for the next day as her caregiver.

The Title:
The title “Preventing Her Shutdown” represents my desperate caregiving efforts to keep my wife interactive, mobile and avoid a vegetative state. The subtitle “Losing My Wife To Alzheimer’s” acknowledges my futile efforts to fight for her life. At the moment no other title clearly reflects the content of this book.

My path to becoming a writer was gradual. Although I have always loved stories, it wasn’t until I gained more life experiences that I started writing seriously. I felt that I needed to explore the world and gain a wider perspective before I could write about it.
I grew up in Winnipeg, Canada, and started traveling in my early twenties. I vividly remember my first trip to New Zealand, where I was amazed by the sight of so many sheep!

This led me to spend over ten years teaching students of all ages in Japan, where I also got married and had a daughter.

Her flagship – The Polly’s Piralympics Series was written and inspired by the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Paralympic Games. In his closing speech, Sir Phillip Craven told of how a young boy was reading with his mother. In the book, he saw a man with an eye patch, a hook for a hand, a parrot on his shoulder and a wooden leg. When asked who it was, he said: “Well he has only one leg, so he must be an Olympian.” Such was the strength of the London 2012 Paralympics that it changed peoples’ perceptions of disability forever. The speech made her both laugh and cry and gave her the inspiration for the Polly’s Piralympics Series of books which are both unique in concept as well as content and format – dealing with disabilities, bullying and cheating. The books also have a comprehension page at the end of each chapter, where the participants can answer questions and draw their own characters etc.
In March 2018 she set up the Schools Reading Road Show – an NPO – with the aim of improving literacy for pupils in the Primary Sector in South Africa. With her in this were Kim Hunter, Fatuma Abdullah, Cora and Evadeen Brickwood. They have visited schools, read to the learners and given motivational talks on anti-bullying and it’s ok to be different.
She has also addressed a Head Teachers Conference (Embrace) in 2018 and 2019; where she gave a workshop on the importance of reading. She gives workshops for YA pupils on how to write a book and participated on panels at the JBBF (Jozi Books and Blogs Festival) 2017/2018, South African Children’s Book Fair 2018 and Kingsmead Book Faire 2019 where she gave a presentation.
In March 2020, she ran the Bennies Book Fayre, the only dedicated Childrens and YA book Fayre in South Africa with over 65 authors, including 10 child authors.

She found it hard to focus on her children’s books and resorted to her go-to short stories. Looking about her she was inspired by the wearing of masks and it reminded her of her time spent living in the Middle East. She wanted to create an anthology of short stories with an Islamic signature, so decided to get other authors involved and approached Raashida Khan to come on board as a co-editor and send out for submissions.

Karen grew up in a small village community in Melbourne Victoria. She has always written and as strange as it might seem – would choose to write, ‘just for fun.’
There have been some unique life-changing events that have marked her outlook on life. Including living in Papua New Guinea on a short-term mission trip building houses for missionaries, running a number of entrepreneurial businesses, and owner building their own home.

Karen relaxes in her glasshouse and sunroom, reading her bible, worshipping, and observing the little things that no one else seems to notice. She gets enjoyment from watching plants grow in her garden, doing puzzles and spending time with those she loves most. The beach and water in general are places of peace and restoration for her.
She loves nothing better than spending time adventuring with God in life. Often having God conversations with whoever she meets or speaks to, whether it be the online banking teller, the tradesman working on their air conditioning unit or the register attendant at the local supermarket. Whether she is sitting in a waiting room or flying interstate for a holiday, God presents daily opportunities to bring encouragement and helps to those she meets, despite any limitations she might have-God fills the gaps.
Because of this ‘excitement,’ a quiet life, with plenty of time for refreshing and filling helps her to flourish, so that she can bring God’s flourish to others.
The writing of these books has been a seven year heart investment. She has poured out her heart and inner world, and desires to bring others walking through tough times some hope, through them. Still, armed with endless determination, she is now proud to count over 30 years of participation in the equestrian community. The person that was writing the story is a young journalist that is trying to get a big breakthrough to enhance the career as a journalist. The story takes place in a rural area and the people that this young journalist meet only displays the character qualities of humans that we meet on a short encounter. Because this is written in first person perspective the character qualities stay inline with the perspective of the writer.
The reader gets the ability imagine the physical nature of the story teller with complete freedom to their liking and comfort. This is also extended to other characters and locations as well.
The plot on the other hand have incredible twists and terns leading up to a discovery that is science fiction in nature but with a hint of reality lurking. It’s the small factors and points that ends with couple of sentences that really demand the readers attention.
The book is about a 5 hour read with a nice flow where the different story line come together to form a grand out come. The pace of the story is quick on the other hand and have few moving parts which demands the readers focus and imagination.

I was born in Tennessee and raised in a small town on the Mississippi River, known as New Madrid, Missouri. I found out at a young age what being alone felt like. Abused by my stepfather, neglected by my mother, and dismissed by authorities that should have protected me sent me on a downward spiral of poor decisions. Never knowing what love felt like, I had only ever felt something real with one person but because he was African American, I was forbidden to see him and forced into a relationship that changed my whole outlook on life. A teen mom at 16, alone to figure it all out.
I began my nursing career in 2002, and continued to struggle with living life while raising three children as a single mother. Striving to set an example for my children of what a mother should be and never wanting them to feel unworthy my fight for success continued. I ultimately completed my Masters Degree in Nursing with specialty as a Family Nurse Practitioner in 2020. I obtained a license as Nursing Home Administrator, CPR instructor for the American Red Cross, and Relationship Guidance Mentor. My passion has always been to help others. A life of struggle, sacrifice, being the sole provider of 3 children, domestic abuse, anxiety, depression, and almost 21 years of being in the medical field has given me more experience and influence than you can ever learn in a book.
I initially met my husband Greg when I was 13. After many years of abusive relationships I had decided that I would never find what I had found with Greg. Miraculously we reconnected in 2013, while he was incarcerated and began building a bond that was unbreakable. In 2016 we got married. He is still incarcerated and we have been doing this time together for almost 10 years. We both believe that God knew where each of us were in life at that time mentally and physically and placed on the same paths to cross once again at a time that we needed each other the most. Both of having gone through trials in life taught us how to appreciate one another. The scars left from my broken past carried a heavy burden and he has helped me overcome a big portion of that. It’s a work still in progress. With his love and support I was able to complete my dream of becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner. Many people have asked, what is someone like you doing with someone like him? My reply is simple….I lived in a prison my whole life and suffered from unforgivable things within the walls of my own home. It is because of him that I have found happiness today. I held on to the hope of one day knowing real love again and he has shown me more love, respect, loyalty, and support while being incarcerated than anyone has ever shown me. He has been the one that has lifted me up through each fire that burned around me even when he didn’t know it.
I enjoy spending time with my children who are now 25, 21, and 17 years old. We have never given up the trend of doing things together. I enjoy being outdoors and traveling. I love the ocean and spending the weekends with my husband. We continue to look forward to him coming home in the very near future so that our lives as it was meant to be will truly begin.
