The gunfire in Phoenix, Arizona, began in the late summer of 2005. For the next year, the shots would continue—along with the robberies, rapes, and assaults. The second one was actually two, and sometimes three, men of mayhem. The Serial Street Shooters drove around shooting people and animals from the window of their car. Samuel Dieteman and Dale Hausner shot anyone who struck their fancy, sometimes multiple people in one night, and sometimes in the same night they would rob stores or light them on fire. Jeff Hausner, Dale’s brother, tagged along for some of the first crimes.

And then they were all caught, convicted, and given their sentences.

One decade later, Phoenix was once again in the crosshairs of a madman as another serial shooter popped up. In fact, another several did. One was a man who drove around and shot people on the sidewalks, in their homes, standing by their cars. He was the Maryvale Serial Shooter, and his name was Aaron Saucedo.

While Saucedo spent a year, from the summer of 2015 to the fall of 2016, shooting and killing people, he had some competition during his first active month. A man known as the I-10 Shooter had begun shooting at cars on the highway, although his attacks caused only one injury and no fatalities. Several copycat shooters turned up as well.

In this book, we will delve primarily into the Baseline Killer and the Serial Street Shooter cases, reopening the year of terror in Phoenix, Arizona.

“Once upon a time. A daughter once grumbled to her father about how awful her life was and how she didn’t know how she was going to make it. She had become weary of always battling and suffering. It seems that as soon as one issue was resolved, a new one arose.

He switched off the burners after twenty minutes. The potatoes were removed from the pot and put in a bowl by the man. The boiled eggs were removed and put in a bowl by him.

He then poured the coffee into a cup and ladled it out. He questioned, turning to face her. What do you see, daughter?

She hurriedly answered, “Potatoes, eggs, and coffee.”

Look closely and touch the potatoes, he instructed. She did and saw how soft they were. Then he instructed her to crack an egg. She removed the shell and looked at the hard-boiled egg. He then prompted her to take a drink of the coffee. Her grin was spurred on by its enticing perfume.

What does this imply, Father?

Then he went on to say that boiling water was the same challenge that the potatoes, eggs, and coffee beans had to overcome.

Each one, however, responded uniquely.

The potato started robust, hard, and unyielding, but after being boiled, it weakened and softened.

The egg was delicate, and the thin shell served as protection for the liquid within until it was placed in the pot of boiling water. The egg’s inside then become firm.

The ground coffee beans, however, were special. They altered the water after being exposed to the hot water and produced something new.

He asked, “Which one are you?” to his daughter. How do you react when misfortune comes knocking at your door? Are you a coffee bean, a potato, or an egg?

Thanks for visiting. I hope you have read or are considering reading Predator in the House, my third novel. I wrote my first book, Kitchen Canary, a Irish historical fiction novel, in 2017, after being widowed and retiring in a span of eighteen months. I followed Kitchen Canary one year later, publishing Through the Open Door. Writing proved cathartic for me as I transitioned from a married, career woman to life on my own.

I discovered my talent for writing fiction after I joined a writers’ group while spending a winter in Florida. When I returned home to Massachusetts, I stayed in touch with one of the members and we formed an alliance, helping edit each other’s work.

It took three years to write Predator in the House. I was part of a group of four authors, living in different parts of the country, who virtually read, ripped, and provided valuable input into each other’s work. The members of this group taught me to dig deep, think critically, and not stop until the work was as near perfection as I knew how to get it. I highly recommend such a group to anyone considering writing a book, poetry, and short stories.

Although writing is a solitary endeavor, selling books is not. The experience of meeting people at book fairs and festivals, speaking at libraries, and attending book club meetings has been a lot of fun. Readers love to hear about my individual writing process, which includes extensive research and note taking. Unfortunately, I can be a bit scattered and often write notes on the back of old envelopes or store receipts. It’s very time consuming trying to sort through scraps of paper all the time, so I have now disciplined myself to use a notebook. Because my first two books were based on Irish immigrants, I’ve heard many amazing stories about readers’ ancestors.

Predator in the House, my current book, is different than my two historical fiction novels. It’s fulfilling a commitment I made to myself years ago, when, through my work in healthcare, I learned of the scourge of child sex trafficking. At that time I vowed to help in some way.

I didn’t write a grim book about an abused, trafficked child because I felt it would be too hard for most people to read. Instead I created a story of a dysfunctional married couple who are bonded only by their determination to kill sex offenders. Predator in the House has many laugh out loud moments as it follows the antics of Karl and Shirley Shea. It is through their experiences the reader learns the signs of child sex trafficking. Predator in the House is also a suspenseful crime mystery, keeping the reader guessing until the very end.

I recently married a man willing to blue sky book ideas with me and suffer through many drafts. He’s pretty nice otherwise, as well. We have a bevy of adult children and grandchildren and live on Cape Cod. Our house is on a pond where our families are creating wonderful summer memories.

Emily Josy Greyson is a psychotherapist and psychic skills growth and development coach.

She discovered that she was an empathetic person at the age of 16. Until then, she was considered a shy and emotional person. She didn’t socialize much and tended to isolate herself. She was teased because she cried a lot. All this made her suffer so much that she turned to the psychologist at her school.

To the therapist, she recounted several episodes in which she was overwhelmed by melancholy, crying fits, and intense emotions in front of people she considered fragile and wanted to defend and protect. From her kindergarten classmates, children she met by chance, to her mother, whom she considered submissive and insecure during the discussions with her authoritarian father she happened to witness.

At the same time, she attended reiki and meditation courses to learn how to manage and direct her emotions.

Today she works as a psycho-pedagogist and holds motivational courses at various companies.

Donna Rollyson is a proud West Virginia native and currently resides in her husband’s hometown of Frametown. Although living in various locations throughout the United States, she always finds her way back to the mountains and streams of her home state.

Richard Still, the Software Academy’s founder, has been passionate about computers and and simplified communication for his whole life.
