In 1977 Elton Gahr made his debut appearance in northwest Montana. The forth and youngest child he spent the next several years focusing on his linguistic skills, learning things like words, sentences and even the alphabet in preparation for his career as a writer.

His first story was in 1983 when he wrote a nineteen page short story about a balloon more than fifteen pages longer than expected by his kindergarten teacher. This was before he learned the all important skill of editing.

By 1987 he had discovered his love of fantasy and wrote his first hit. A handwritten forty page choose your own adventure in the style of the lone wolf series of books. It was a best seller among boy’s age 9 to 10 in his elementary school.

In high school he made friends who showed interests in telling stories and in addition to the stories he continued to write for himself he began to write comic book stories, spending every study hall perfecting his epic superhero story that he is still hasn’t entirely finished.

It wasn’t until 1997 that he realized that he wanted to spend his life telling stories and began to focus more fully on the craft of writing. Over the next years he wrote several novels and short stories though only a few of the short stories were ever seen by anyone else.

In 2002 Elton Gahr moved from his hometown to Joplin, Missouri where he learned the joys of 100% humidity and tornadoes as well as making many new friends and writing more books and novels.

By 2007 Elton Gahr realized that simply writing books and leaving them on his computer was unlikely to make him the sort of money that he might want. He would indeed have to let other people see those stories and he began to send stories to magazines. He still has the names of several well known editors on those rejection slips.

In 2012 he decided to self publish the first of The Middleman Saga. His epic fantasy series. As his first attempt at publishing Elton Gahr is more proud of having self published “Middlemen: Born of Earth” than he is of the book itself. He published two more longer and better Middlemen stories in the next years.

Since then he has completed two anthologies, two books in the Spaceship Vision Series and the first book in his modern fantasy series “The Thirteen Gates: Apprentice” is now available.

Outside of his writing his greatest accomplishments include defeating Contra without using the Konami Code and convincing his rescue dog to trust him.

About Preventing Her Shutdown

Preventing Her Shutdown is an inside look of what an ongoing caregiver spouse goes through in my desperate effort to keep my wife with Alzheimer’s “connected”. In Real Time there are very personal unloaded feelings, emotions expressed and actions taken, never confided to anyone while slowly losing my wife.

There are really no fixed “do this” and “do that” rules, as there are no two profile behavioral changes alike. No one has the “exact key” as to how to respond to Alzheimer’s radical behavioral changes. I describe these dramatic changes with my wife who is in the beginning of the advanced stages.

My reactions have always been intuitive in my desperate attempts to keep her “connected” with me, family and her surroundings. My experiences and actions as they happen “racing against the Alzheimer’s clock” to keep her interacting every day, even though she no longer speaks, are detailed in my never-ending battle to prevent her shutdown.

How do I connect with my wife and get her to connect with me? This is always a constant desperation on my part especially because she doesn’t speak. I am always afraid she will stop connecting with me, especially when I get that blank look, that “daze into no man’s land. “That is the day I am trying to avoid. There are different things I do, depending on the moment and situation we are in, always taking every opportunity I can to promote interaction with her.

Many times I wonder what she is thinking or what her feelings are because now she doesn’t speak at all. I only have her facial expressions or sounds. Is she happy? Is she sad? I never see sad expressions on her face so I never know if she is sad. I do see a straight face sometimes and when I do I try to provoke a smile or laughter just to be sure she is not sad. Does she know she is not well? Does she know how she was before? Does she remember her past? What I do to help her restore her past.

Then I realized “what about us”, our 43 years of marriage, does she remember that past? She recognizes and knows me well but how far back? Did our marriage begin in 1979 or 2017 when she was diagnosed?
I wasn’t sure where I was in her memory or how she sees me, as her friend or husband so I felt I had to make sure she realized I was at least her “best friend.” She frequently shows her affection by kissing a lot but I am still not sure how she sees me.

She doesn’t speak at all. She expresses only some sounds and shows a lot of anxiety. This becomes a real challenge trying to figure out what she wants and how she feels. How do we communicate? How do I talk to her? How does she tell me what she wants or needs? We both learned how to interact with each other.

It’s even worse when the victim is unidentified. “Unknown” man/woman/ child murders send a chill through us and can even cause a little sadness. How could a person be so alone in the world that absolutely no one came forward to give them a name and a burial?

This volume examines five instances of a single or serial killing involving victims who were beheaded by their killers:

●The Thames Torso Murders: Known as the “Thames Mysteries” or “Embankment Murders,” this series of gruesome killings was overshadowed by the terror surrounding Jack the Ripper’s crimes but were also very fascinating.

●The August 8, 1886 discovery of a decomposing male torso outside Wallingford, Connecticut. The victim was never identified, and a woman who claimed that she knew the whole story behind the murder committed suicide.

●The Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run: Between 1935 and 1938, a still-unidentified serial killer murdered and dismembered at least twelve victims in Cleveland, Ohio. All but three remain unidentified. Eliot Ness, the man who was partly responsible for taking down Al Capone, headed the investigations.

●Beth Doe: On December 20, 1976, a young boy made a gruesome discovery on the banks of the Lehigh River in White Haven, Pennsylvania. The dismembered and mutilated remains of a young, white woman and her unborn child had been stuffed into three suitcases and thrown from a bridge along Interstate 80 over the Lehigh River.

●The February 28, 1983 discovery of the headless body of a little girl between the ages of 8 and 11, decomposing in an abandoned home on the north side of St. Louis, MO. Her head was never found. Despite heavy publicity, nobody identified her.

What do these cases have in common, besides the fact that they are cold and involve headless, unidentified victims? Somebody got away with murder…

It has happened all over the world. A stranger appears at the bedside of a mother who has just given birth and plays upon the trust of the parents to trick them into handing over their child. Perhaps the person is dressed as a doctor, nurse, lab technician, or some other member of the medical staff, but whatever the case may be, their performance as an imposter is sufficient to spin a web of deception convincing enough to spring their trap. Other abductors eschew deception in favor of force or stealth. Some have pulled a gun on the mother and demanded their child; some have simply snatched up the infant when no one was looking.

More often than not the perpetrators of these crimes are women, although some claim that their demanding boyfriends or husbands put them up to it. Typically these women are either unable to have children of their own or have great difficulty in doing so. Some of them are depressed over recent miscarriages and wish to replace the baby they lost.

Of course, this begs the question of why they don’t simply use the proper channels to adopt a child who needs a home, rather than stealing babies that don’t belong to them. One answer is that many of them are unable to do so due to a criminal record, history of mental illness, or general instability. Anyone in any of those categories would most likely be denied conventional adoption. But as you will see from the cases in this book, even though the methodology is often similar, the reasons are legion when it comes to what motivates the hand that robs the cradle.

D. B. Borton is the author of two mystery series—the Cat Caliban series and the Gilda Liberty series —as well as the standalone mysteries novels Smoke and Bayou City Burning and the humorous science fiction novel Second Coming. She is Professor Emeritus of English at Ohio Wesleyan University.

A native Texan, Borton became an ardent admirer of Nancy Drew at a young age. At the age of fourteen, she acquired her own blue roadster, trained on the freeways of Houston and the broad stretches of oil-endowed Texas highway, and began her travels. She also began a lifetime of political activism, working only for political candidates who lost. She left Texas at about the time everyone else arrived.

In graduate school, Borton converted a lifetime of passionate reading and late-night movie-watching into a doctorate in English. She discovered that people would pay her to discuss literature and writing, although not much. But because she found young people interesting and entertaining and challenging, she became a college teacher, and survived many generations of college students. Later, during a career crisis, she discovered that people would pay her to tell stories, although even less than they would pay her to discuss stories written by someone else.

Borton has lived in the Southwest and Midwest, and on the West Coast, where she has planted roses and collected three degrees in English without relinquishing her affection for the ways in which actual speakers constantly reinvent the language to meet their needs.
