Stephen Shaiken practiced criminal law for more than thirty five years, the first four in Brooklyn, and the rest in San Francisco. His decades as a criminal trial lawyer are often reflected in his writing. He is a graduate of Queens College and Brooklyn Law School, and earned an MA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University. Stephen’s three NJA Club novels are best described as exotic noir thrillers, but he also writes historical fiction, humor, literary and science fiction. Several of his short stories in these genres were published; those and others are posted on his blog.

Stephen recently completed a different kind of novel, set in New York City in the late sixties era, against the backdrop of a young rock and roll manager struggling to break from the second-tier Queens rock scene to the glamor and stardom of Manhattan.

I love to travel. Been to Europe – places like Italy. My favorite place there. Pompeii. That is an incredible place. Eerie and exciting at the same time in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. I love to visit Navy ships. Especially battleships. I have seen the Alabama, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Missouri. And of course, Pearl Harbor. Traveling by car is the best. The ability to stop at anything.

I am a stay-at-home mother of four children. I just published my first book Deerly beloved on May 17th, 2022. I am currently finishing up two more books. I enjoy crafting, painting, gardening, reading, and writing.

I grow my own salsa makings. I currently have 95 pepper plants, 23 tomato plants, 24 cucumber plants, romaine, and all kinds of herbs planted. I make on average 200 to 300 jars of salsa every year from medium all the way to insanely hot.

I hand paint terra cotta pots in my free time. I make character faces and animals. They all have a different personality and no two are the same.

My living room is a library. I love collecting books. Nothing quite like it! Every inch of my walls are covered in packed bookshelves that doesn’t have furniture on it. My children love reading also and I am always buying new books to fill shelves.

A father’s love is like an underground river. Though invisible, it flows silently, providing nourishment, safety and love. At its heart, the novel is a coming-of-age story. The protagonist is Babar Ali or ‘Bunny’ as he is called by his family, a 26-year-old boy estranged from his family. He holds a grudge against his father after having been sent off to boarding school at a very young age. The two have not talked for many years. The unexpected nature of the event has left a lasting impression on his mind and developed a wide gap between father and son that, over the years, has failed to fill.
The story starts with a phone call from Bunny’s mother telling him that his father has been in an accident. The event brings up memories of the past. All the unresolved issues, that never went away, bubble to the surface. In that brief period, he finds a moment of clarity. He realizes that reason for the gaping chasm between him and his father is one unresolved issue from the past that was never addressed. The only way that he can find peace with himself is if he accepts the past and resolves them. Only by forgiving his father and letting can Bunny move on with his life.
When the novel begins in Islamabad in 2006 ‘Bunny’ is on his second bite of reheated Hawaiian pizza. In between bites, he has a premonition that his father has died. A split second later, the telephone rings, confirming his fears and making him go down a rabbit hole of memories and events he had long forgotten. At the core of these is the event that forever changed his life. Through flashbacks, we are told that thirteen years ago, his Army father went off into the jungle against a feared Sindhi dacoit. In the ensuing operation, the dacoit’s young son is killed which severely affects Bunny’s father. Fearful of a retaliatory attack on his son, the young boy is sent to a boarding school without a warning. The comradery and friendship that had developed between father and son over a shared love for western novels and adulation for cowboys, defines their relationship. Bunny sees in his father the real-life example of the cowboys he reads and admires. He craves his father’s approval and appreciation in everything. From there on this need to please his father puts him at a crossroads, as Bunny attempts to adjust to the new life on his own while trying to hold onto his past. With time, the relationship between father and son starts to crack.
The story provides glimpses of Bunny’s past in the early 1990s when his father and he bonded over a shared love for western novels. Both found in the other a companion and a friend. So much so that when his father gets posted to Sukkur during the Anti Dacoit Operation, he goes with him. At that time, there is political unrest in the country with provincial differences simmering just beneath the surface.
The story in the present is spread over 24 hours starting from when Bunny gets a call from his mother to get to the hospital. The narrative alternates between the present and thirteen years ago when Bunny was sent to the boarding school. As the older, disillusioned Bunny reaches the hospital, he is reminded of the wounds of the past. By interacting with characters from his past and present, we get to see the wide-eyed innocent boy he had been and the closed tight-lipped aloof man he has become. The story is told against the backdrop of two contrasting yet similar backgrounds. In the present, the war against terrorism is raging where extremists are conducting suicide attacks against state forces, while in the past Bunny’s father is part of the state apparatus that is going up against the dacoits in the Sindh province.
At the time the story starts in the present, Bunny’s father had retired from the Army under a cloud for the shooting of the dacoits’ son and had been working as a security expert for a religious scholar. He gets shot while trying to save the scholar. When Bunny reaches the hospital, he finds his father in the ICU struggling between life and death. As the hours tick by in the present, we are given glimpses of a young Bunny were days and months, spent alone and apart, add layers and miles between the father and son relationship. Slowly resentment begins setting in as Bunny sees in his younger brother a replacement for his father’s love. This is because Bunny never found out the reason for him being sent off to boarding school. He keeps trying to reach out, even running away and boarding a train to get back to his family. But when he is sent back again, something breaks inside, and the old love gets buried under hurt and betrayal.
The story asks the question, can bonds of blood be broken? Can the past be changed? And can mistakes made with the best of intentions cause irreversible grief? Looking after his father, Bunny goes over his whole life and realizes that all those events have brought him where he finds himself. By choosing to forgive his father, who acted out of love, Bunny can not only change the past but can help his family and himself move forward. Throughout the story, we get to meet many characters who play a role in the formation of Bunny’s personality. One such major personality is his grandmother who tells Bunny the circumstances of his father’s decision and the pain it had brought on him and the family. Bunny realizes that sometimes love asks us to take hard choices. When he decides to come back to live with his family, the cracks that had once threatened to shatter their family finally start to heal.
Ten years later, Bunny has cleared the Civil Services Exams and is posted in Karachi when he receives another phone call. This time it is his grandmother who is in the hospital. By the time he arrives, she has already died. Bunny and his father bury her and, on the way back, his father breaks down and tells Bunny about the night. He tells him how scared he was for Bunny and wanted to protect him. Bunny hugs his father and consoles him as they walk back, the bond stronger than ever.

I am a U.S. Air Force veteran who served at the end of the Vietnam war. The Air Force found that I had a talent for languages, so they sent me to language school. I served as a linguist for a section of military intelligence and then spent several years at the National Security Agency (NSA) with a top secret clearance. I was extremely interested in police work and later joined a state police. After some time in uniform, I was recruited to be a hostage/crisis negotiator and was trained by FBI hostage negotiators in criminal and abnormal psychology and in the techniques used to “talk down” a hostage taker or someone barricaded with the intent to commit suicide. It turned out that I had a natural talent for it and never lost anyone. I retired after getting an advanced degree in psychology and decided to use my talent to help others who suffer from mental illness and despair. I wrote my first novel in the mid-nineties but found I needed to learn more of how to express my creative imagination eloquently with descriptive and believable character depiction, dialogue, storyline, and background. I love the idea of providing readers with entertainment and an escape into a different realm of their imagination with my writing.
