I am a musician. Marching band, Jazz band, Concert band – loved them all. That was my life for many years. I lived to play music. Even did it for a President many years ago as a member of a band.

I have done work in my house. Many times learning it as I go. I can and do DIY. My kitchen turned out nice as I figured out how to refinish the cabinets.

I love to travel. Been to Europe – places like Italy. My favorite place there. Pompeii. That is an incredible place. Eerie and exciting at the same time in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. I love to visit Navy ships. Especially battleships. I have seen the Alabama, Wisconsin, Iowa, and Missouri. And of course, Pearl Harbor. Traveling by car is the best. The ability to stop at anything.

My experience is across a wide range of things. A jack of many trades and master of none. Or maybe a few.

Mariam conceived the idea of the Deep in 2014 when she heard about a friend who got into a terrible diving accident. Fortunately, all turned well for her friend. But this incident captivated Mariam’s attention and she ended up writing the accident’s details on a note. These notes were later developed into a plot. But Mariam had writer’s block and she was about to give up working on the book. During this time, she moved to Australia. She would often wander, and hike parts of this beautiful country’s wilderness. One of the places she would come to love the most is called the great ocean road. A coast area that overlooks beautiful ocean sceneries, these trips helped revive Mariam’s dream to continue writing the story, and finally, bring The Deep to life.

Moreover, Mariam would go snorkelling regularly in order to envision and experience fully the world that her characters are experiencing. Whether it was the murky waters, the beautiful corals, strong water currents, or even not so friendly fishes.

Although finishing the manuscript was a very daunting task, especially since Mariam had to translate her own book from Arabic to English herself. It was an experience that she fully enjoyed, Learned a lot from, and helped her dive into a world that is immensely mesmerizing and not fully explored.

“I am Liam, of the Fianna,” he announced, holding his sword aloft.

His opposition smiled lopsidedly, shaking his head.

“That means nothing to me, ” he shrugged, producing his own weapon, a 19th century officers sword, taken from his first kill, who’ had seemed not to take to kindly to being garrotted then decapitated with a piano wire, or being beaten senseless with a length of steel pipe.

Forest ‟Jack” Bowman is the Jackson Kelly Professor of Law Emeritus at West Virginia University and a lifelong West Virginian. He taught at WVU for twenty-three years, during which time he was named “Professor of the Year” by an unprecedented seven graduating classes. He also was named University-wide “Professor of the Year” in 1998, and in 1988 was named “Professor of the Year” for all of higher education in West Virginia by the Faculty Merit Foundation of West Virginia.
A veteran of the United States Army, he served over four years in the Judge Advocate Generals Corps, Regular Army, where he defended soldiers in courts martial, including two capital cases.
